The best open-source Android launcher depends on how you want to find and organize apps. Lawnchair keeps a familiar, Pixel-inspired layout while adding controls; Kvaesitso puts search first; Olauncher pares the home screen down to text and gestures; Fossify Launcher focuses on widgets and customization; and Victoria Launcher replaces the usual grid with an alphabetical list. These are distinct approaches, not a tested ranking: the project pages establish features and release details, not comparative performance or independent privacy audits.
Which launcher fits the way you use your phone?
| Launcher | Home-screen approach | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lawnchair | Conventional layout with Pixel-inspired features | You want familiar Android organization with more theming and controls | Lawnchair 16 is an in-development Android 16-based branch; its README warns about development-build issues and performance. |
| Kvaesitso | Search-first | You prefer searching for apps and information over browsing a grid | The official F-Droid build omits features that depend on nonfree external APIs. |
| Olauncher | Minimal text-and-gesture home screen | You want fewer visual elements and quick access to an app list | Its intentionally sparse approach is not aimed at extensive home-screen customization. |
| Fossify Launcher | Customizable home with widgets | You want layout and theme controls, resizable widgets, and a privacy-oriented project pitch | The F-Droid listing labels the app Beta; its privacy statements are project claims, not an independent audit. |
| Victoria Launcher | Favorites plus an edge-accessed alphabetical list | You want to browse apps by name rather than scan a grid | Its no-network and no-tracking statements come from the listing, not an independent audit. |

1. Lawnchair: a Pixel-like home screen with more control
Lawnchair describes itself as a free, open-source Android home app based on Launcher3 that ports features from Pixel Launcher. Its listed controls include icon packs, fonts and colors, while Material 3 Expressive theming can follow wallpaper and system colors. It also lists global search across apps, contacts and web results, plus At a Glance support with Smartspacer integration.
Recommended Free Tools
The project’s Lawnchair 16 branch is in development and based on Android 16 Launcher3. The README warns that development builds can have extra issues and affect performance, and recommends making backups. QuickSwitch integration with Android Recents on Android 15–16 requires root, so it is an advanced caveat rather than a routine setup requirement. If you want a more conventional layout with room to adjust its appearance, Lawnchair is the closest fit in this group; choose a stable release channel if you do not want to deal with development-build risk.

2. Kvaesitso: search before scrolling
Kvaesitso is a GPL-licensed launcher organized around global search. Its F-Droid listing describes searching on-device apps, contacts and calendar events, with optional connections to services such as Wikipedia or a Nextcloud instance. It also includes tools such as a calculator and unit converter. This suits people who know what they want to open or look up and would rather search than maintain a carefully arranged grid.
Build choice matters: the official F-Droid edition removes features that depend on nonfree external APIs. The project README describes adding its own repository for feature-complete builds. Consider which features you need and the implications of the selected build and external services before choosing. The F-Droid listing recorded version 1.41.0-fdroid as added September 17, 2026, with Android 8.0 or newer required; that is listing metadata, not a promise that every distribution channel offers the same build.

3. Olauncher: a sparse home screen built around gestures
Olauncher keeps the home screen deliberately minimal and offers a swipe-up app list with quick search. Its F-Droid description lists daily wallpaper, double-tap-to-lock and no ads. Gestures and long presses provide access to settings and home-app changes, making this a better match for someone who wants fewer on-screen elements than for someone seeking a widget-rich, heavily themed layout.

4. Fossify Launcher: widgets and customization
Fossify Launcher is the option to consider if you want resizable widgets alongside controls for dynamic themes, custom colors and layouts. Its listing also says you can hide or uninstall apps, and describes the launcher as having no internet access, tracking or ads. Those are claims made by the project listing, not the result of an independent security audit.
The F-Droid listing labels the app “Beta.” It records version 1.10.0 as added February 18, 2026, with Android 8.0 or newer required. The beta label is worth weighing if you depend on a stable launcher for daily use.

5. Victoria Launcher: an alphabetical list at the edge of the screen
Victoria Launcher replaces the conventional grid with favorites beneath clock and weather widgets, then an alphabetical app list reached with an edge swipe. An A–Z scrubber helps you move through the list. Its listing also describes settings for layout, icons, text size, spacing, font and color, with optional search, widgets and Now Playing.
The F-Droid listing records version 0.71.0 as added September 26, 2026, with Android 8.0 or newer required. It says the launcher has no ads, tracking or network access; these are listing claims, not independently verified findings. The list-based layout makes Victoria a fit for people who prefer predictable alphabetical browsing and want to adjust how the list looks.

How to choose and install one
Choose by how you find apps
- Search across apps and other information: Choose Kvaesitso if a search-first home screen matches your habits.
- Swipe up for a list and quick search: Olauncher keeps the home screen sparse.
- Browse alphabetically from the screen edge: Victoria organizes the app list by name.
- Keep a more conventional home-screen organization: Lawnchair and Fossify offer alternatives with more familiar layout approaches.
Check customization and widgets
Lawnchair and Fossify document broad theming and layout options. Victoria lists controls for list layout, typography, icons and colors. Olauncher prioritizes minimalism, while Kvaesitso prioritizes search. For widgets, Fossify documents resizable widgets, Lawnchair lists At a Glance with Smartspacer integration, and Victoria lists optional widgets and Now Playing.
Verify the exact build and Android requirement
The cited F-Droid listings specify Android 7.0 or newer for Olauncher and Android 8.0 or newer for Kvaesitso, Fossify Launcher and Victoria Launcher. Lawnchair’s version 16 branch is an in-development Android 16-based branch; check the project’s current instructions for your device and chosen release channel. Version numbers and dates above describe the cited listings and can change as projects publish updates.
- Open the app’s linked project page or F-Droid listing and confirm the package, Android minimum and available build.
- Compare the update channel and source. For Kvaesitso in particular, verify whether the build’s external-API-dependent features are included.
- Install the app from the selected source, then set it as the default home app using Android’s prompt or the default-app controls in your device’s Settings. Menu wording and location vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Try the launcher’s core interaction—search, gestures or list navigation—before investing time in arranging the home screen. If switching back, use your device’s default home-app controls to select its previous launcher.
What these recommendations do—and do not—establish
The project pages and app listings establish how each launcher describes its features, build requirements and release metadata. They do not establish a comparative speed ranking, user-satisfaction result or independent security audit. Treat privacy and network statements as attributed project claims, and assess performance on your own phone rather than assuming one launcher will be fastest for every device.
