If you want classic games without tracking down original hardware, four official mini-consoles in this guide include games in the system itself. A fifth option, Atari’s 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition, is a cartridge-based exception: it comes with two PAC-MAN games on one cartridge and can play compatible Atari cartridges. The picks below are not hands-on rankings; they distinguish the systems by game delivery, play style, controls, and compatibility.
How to choose an official retro console
First, decide whether “built in” is essential. The Gamestation Go, Genesis Mini 2, NES Classic Mini, and SNES Classic Edition have fixed collections stored in the console. The Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition instead supplies a game cartridge and supports compatible original cartridges.
Next, consider where and how you want to play. The Gamestation Go is a handheld with specialized controls for different game types. The other systems here are mini-console options intended for television play; Nintendo specifies HDMI for the NES Classic Mini. Finally, check the collection: stated game counts are useful, but they do not mean every system has the same genres or version of a classic.

| Nintendo NES Classic Mini | 30 built-in NES games | Connects to an HDTV by HDMI | Fixed built-in collection |
| Super NES Classic Edition | Included SNES games listed by Nintendo; total count not stated on the cited support page | Mini-console | Fixed built-in collection |

1. Atari Gamestation Go: best for a handheld with a broad built-in library
Atari and My Arcade describe the Gamestation Go as a handheld containing over 200 built-in console and arcade games. Its cited examples include PAC-MAN, Balls of Steel, and five Atari Recharged titles. A 7-inch display makes it the portable pick in this group, and a rechargeable battery is specified for 4–5 hours of play by the manufacturer. That is a manufacturer-stated estimate, not an independent battery test.

The control layout is a key distinction: alongside conventional controls, the device has a paddle, trackball, and keypad. Those options suit games that benefit from more specialized input, but the multi-control layout is less like a simple one-pad mini-console. HDMI output lets you connect it to a television, and Wi-Fi is included. See Atari and My Arcade’s Gamestation Go details.
2. SEGA Genesis Mini 2: best for a SEGA-focused mini-console
SEGA says the Genesis Mini 2 includes 60 classic titles and a six-button control pad. Choose it if you want a fixed collection associated with the Genesis era and prefer a familiar gamepad rather than the Gamestation Go’s paddle, trackball, and keypad. SEGA’s cited product information establishes the total, but the available details here do not enumerate the games, so check the exact regional product listing before purchase if a particular title is essential. See SEGA’s Genesis Mini 2 information.

3. Nintendo NES Classic Mini: best for a built-in NES collection
Nintendo says the NES Classic Mini connects to an HDTV using HDMI and comes with 30 NES games built in. The named titles include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, PAC-MAN, and Kirby’s Adventure. This is a straightforward choice if you want a fixed NES-era set ready to play on a modern television rather than original cartridges. See Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini details.

4. Super NES Classic Edition: best for notable SNES favorites
Nintendo’s support page lists included games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, and Star Fox 2. These examples make the system especially appealing if those SNES-era releases are the draw. The cited page supports the named lineup, but does not state a total game count here; verify the full included-game list for the exact edition you are considering. 5. Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition: cartridge-based exception for PAC-MAN fans
This is not a built-in library console in the same sense as the four systems above. Atari bundles PAC-MAN: Double Feature on one cartridge, containing PAC-MAN 7800 and PAC-MAN 2600, and describes the console as compatible with Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. It suits a buyer who wants to play cartridge games and values compatibility with that older hardware family, not someone seeking a large installed collection out of the box. See Atari’s PAC-MAN Edition details.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Confirm the delivery format: make sure the games you expect are built into the system, supplied on a cartridge, or sold separately.
- Check the exact game list: a title count does not guarantee that a specific favorite is included. Confirm the relevant regional edition and its lineup.
- Verify current local stock and accessories: availability, price, and included accessories can change. Check the seller’s listing for the exact model and what is in the box.
- Match the controls to the games: the Gamestation Go offers a paddle, trackball, and keypad; the Genesis Mini 2 includes a six-button pad. Consider whether specialized input or a conventional controller better suits your intended games.
- For Atari 2600+ models, check cartridges: Atari describes compatibility with 2600 and 7800 cartridges, but confirm that any particular cartridge you plan to use is supported.
