These five Nintendo DS games stand out across very different genres: adventure, action RPG, rhythm, role-playing, and kart racing. They are “10/10 masterpieces” in the subjective sense—not a claim that every one received a perfect review score. The selection draws on Acclaimed Video Games’ Nintendo DS critic-list aggregation, updated March 25, 2026, and supporting retrospectives and guides.
How to choose among these five
Start with the kind of play you want. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and The World Ends With You are the story-forward picks; Elite Beat Agents turns the stylus into a rhythm-game controller; Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver offer a role-playing adventure; and Mario Kart DS is the choice for repeatable racing sessions. The critic-list aggregation places these titles in the top five of its Nintendo DS entries, but it is a synthesis of appearances on critic lists, not a universal ranking or a measured score for every player.
| Game | Genre or format | Best fit | Distinctive DS connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney | Adventure / visual novel | Players looking for a story-led adventure | Its DS-era appeal is represented here by its genre and high placement in the critic-list aggregation. |
| The World Ends With You | Action RPG | Players who want an unusual, story-focused RPG | Its dual-screen battles make notable use of the hardware. |
| Elite Beat Agents | Music / rhythm game | Players who want timing-based, stylus-led play | Tap and drag actions are synchronized with the music. |
| Pokémon HeartGold / Pokémon SoulSilver | Role-playing games | Players who want a Pokémon adventure set in Johto | The original package included the step-counting Pokéwalker accessory. |
| Mario Kart DS | Kart racing | Players who want racing that works well in short or repeated sessions | It was the first Mario Kart title to offer online play. |
1. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
The critic-list aggregation ranks Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney first among its Nintendo DS entries and classifies it as an adventure / visual novel. That makes it the strongest starting point on this list if you want a game led by narrative rather than racing, rhythm challenges, or an action-RPG format. The aggregation lists Capcom as developer and publisher and gives an estimated main-playthrough length of about 18 hours; that estimate is a broad guide, not a guarantee of how long an individual player will take.
Its position is especially useful if you are choosing by reputation: it leads this particular aggregation, but that does not turn a subjective “10/10” label into evidence of a universal perfect review score.

2. The World Ends With You
The World Ends With You ranks second in the aggregation and is classified as an action RPG. Its case is not just that it belongs to a highly regarded genre: Nintendojo’s retrospective singles out its dual-screen battles and character-building through food and clothing, alongside a mix of suspense, drama, and comedy.
Nintendojo’s retrospective describes the game as an unusually strong expression of the DS’s innovative spirit, pointing to its departures from familiar JRPG conventions across gameplay, visuals, music, and story. For a player choosing specifically for distinctive hardware use, its dual-screen design gives it a clearer DS identity than a standard RPG format.

- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
3. Elite Beat Agents
Elite Beat Agents is the rhythm-game pick, ranked third among the aggregation’s DS entries. GameSpot describes its stylus-driven play as a mix of tapping and dragging in time with the music. That is a direct fit for the DS touchscreen: the hardware is part of how the game asks you to play, rather than just the device carrying it.

Choose it if you want a music game built around timing and touch interactions instead of a longer role-playing or story-led adventure. The aggregation identifies iNiS as its developer.

4. Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver
The fourth-ranked entry is a pair: Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver. Nintendo UK describes them as enhanced versions of the 2001 Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver, with the adventure set in Johto. Their remake status makes them a natural choice for players who want a Pokémon role-playing adventure with roots in those earlier games.
What differs between the versions
The versions differ in their climax legendary Pokémon: HeartGold features Ho-Oh, while SoulSilver features Lugia. That is the clearest version-specific distinction established here; choose according to which legendary matters more to you rather than assuming one version is categorically better.

- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
The Pokéwalker and physical copies
Nintendo UK says the original game package included the Pokéwalker, a step-counting accessory. A used cartridge listing may not include it, so check the specific listing if the accessory matters to you. Nintendo’s 2011 financial results report listed combined lifetime sales of 11.9 million units for Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version; this is a historical figure from that report, not a current sales total.

5. Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart DS rounds out the aggregation’s top five and is the most immediately repeatable choice here: its kart-racing format suits quick sessions as well as repeated attempts to improve. GameSpot characterizes it as intense racing where strategic use of speed matters. Nintendo Life notes that it was the first Mario Kart game to offer online play, an important series milestone for its time.

That online feature is historical context, not a promise that the service is currently available. Current Nintendo DS online-service status has not been established here. Nintendo’s 2011 financial results report listed lifetime sales of 21.04 million units for Mario Kart DS; that number is the report’s historical figure, not a current total.

Current prices and stock vary, and no specific listing or seller is verified here. For any of these games, compare the exact title and platform and inspect the listing details rather than assuming every copy has the same condition or included items.
- Confirm that the listing is for the Nintendo DS game you intend to buy and check the stated cartridge condition.
- Check the region information if compatibility or a particular release matters to you.
- For HeartGold or SoulSilver, verify whether the Pokéwalker is actually included if you want the accessory.
- Do not treat a past online-play feature as evidence of current service availability.
Which game should you start with?
- Choose Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for an adventure / visual-novel format and the highest placement in this critic-list aggregation.
- Choose The World Ends With You for an action RPG whose dual-screen battles and character-building give it a distinctive DS identity.
- Choose Elite Beat Agents for stylus-led rhythm play.
- Choose Pokémon HeartGold or Pokémon SoulSilver for a Johto role-playing adventure; decide between them based on Ho-Oh versus Lugia, and check whether a used copy includes the Pokéwalker if you want it.
- Choose Mario Kart DS for racing you can return to repeatedly, while treating its online-play distinction as a historical feature.
The list is deliberately varied: its point is not that every player will prefer the same “best” DS game, but that each title makes a persuasive case in a different style of play.
