For most monitors, the safest first choice is a clean, soft microfiber cloth used according to the display maker’s instructions. If the manual permits liquid, apply a little to the cloth—not directly to the screen. The five options below are a practical shortlist, not a tested ranking: available sources describe these products and cleaning methods, but do not establish which cleaner performs best or is safe for every display coating.
Five monitor-cleaning options to consider
Choose by matching the product and method to your monitor’s exact model and screen surface. Product descriptions establish intended use and format; they are not independent evidence of cleaning performance.

Check your monitor’s cleaning rules first
Manufacturers do not give one universal recipe. For Samsung monitors, Samsung’s U.S. support guidance recommends a soft microfiber cloth and distilled or still water. It says not to spray water or detergent directly on the screen and warns against alcohol, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, paper towels, and cloth towels. These directions apply to Samsung monitors, not automatically to other brands.

Apple’s guidance starts with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and specifies a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth when further cleaning is needed. It warns against window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, and cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide, and says not to spray cleaner directly on the display. Follow the directions for the specific Apple device and screen surface.

For Dell monitors and display screens, Dell’s equipment guidance says to wipe in one direction, from top to bottom. It permits display-glass cleaner only if it is designed for display surfaces and used as directed. A specialty surface may have additional restrictions: check its specific instructions rather than assuming a general screen-cleaning product is suitable.
How to clean a monitor without adding unnecessary risk
- Find the model-specific instructions. Check the monitor maker’s support page or manual, including any guidance for a matte, coated, or other specialty surface.
- Start dry and gentle. Use a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth to remove dust. Do not press on the panel; Samsung specifically warns against pressing on the screen.
- Use liquid only if the instructions allow it. Use the liquid and cloth method specified for your display. Where a manufacturer permits a damp cloth or cleaner, put a small amount on the cloth rather than spraying the screen.
- Wipe as directed and stop if unsure. Dell’s guidance for its equipment specifies one-direction strokes from top to bottom. Do not substitute a different cleaner or keep adding moisture if marks remain; consult the display maker’s instructions.
How to choose among the products
- Compatibility comes first. A product’s intended use or “screen cleaner” label does not prove that it is suitable for your monitor’s coating.
- Pick the format that fits your use. A dry cloth is reusable and needs no liquid; a spray requires careful application; a pre-moistened wipe is a separate format to verify against the manual.
- Consider moisture control. Applying liquid to a cloth makes it easier to avoid putting excess moisture directly on the display, in keeping with Samsung and Apple’s instructions not to spray the screen.
- Check package contents and price at purchase. Sizes and included items vary, and the sources here do not establish a full cost-per-use comparison or current retailer prices.
No independent head-to-head evidence in the cited sources ranks these options for cleaning effectiveness, streaking, residue, coating safety, or value. Treat product descriptions as claims about the product’s format and intended use, not proof of superior results.
