The best MCP server for your VS Code setup is the one that gives your AI agent a useful capability you do not already have. GitHub, Playwright, Context7, Microsoft Learn, and the MCP filesystem server cover repository work, browser interaction, documentation lookup, Microsoft technologies, and scoped local files. Treat them as a flexible starter list—not five tools every developer needs enabled at once.
What MCP does in VS Code
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external data sources, tools, and workflows. It is a protocol, not a particular AI model or server. Visual Studio Code is among the clients that support it. The MCP introduction explains the protocol; VS Code’s MCP guide describes how to add and manage servers.
An MCP server makes a set of capabilities available to the client. What it can access or change depends on the server and how you configure it, so choosing one involves more than asking whether it sounds useful: consider its workflow fit, permissions, runtime and authentication requirements, and overlap with features already in VS Code.

These five recommendations cover different tasks. The order is an editorial grouping by broad workflow coverage, not a measured ranking, popularity list, or performance comparison. The cited project documentation describes capabilities and setup; it does not establish comparative reliability or productivity gains.
#1 Best Overall
1. GitHub MCP Server for repository collaboration
GitHub’s official MCP Server exposes GitHub capabilities through configurable toolsets, including repository, issue, and pull-request workflows. It is a natural fit if you regularly work with hosted repositories and collaboration tasks through an AI agent.
Enable only the toolsets needed for the work at hand. A narrow configuration reduces unnecessary access and keeps the available actions more relevant.
2. Playwright MCP for browser interaction
Playwright MCP lets an AI interact with web pages using structured accessibility snapshots. Its documented interactions include navigation, clicking, typing, screenshots, keyboard and mouse actions, dialogs, and tabs. The project lists VS Code as a supported client.
Rank #2
The setup guide requires Node.js 20 or newer and documents installation through the VS Code CLI. VS Code advises considering its built-in browser tools first when browser interaction is the goal; a separate browser server makes sense when its capabilities better match the task.
One tool deserves special care: Playwright identifies browser_run_code_unsafe as arbitrary JavaScript execution and equivalent to remote code execution (RCE). Its documentation says to enable it only for trusted clients.
3. Context7 MCP for library documentation
Context7 retrieves current documentation and code examples into the model’s context, which can help when working with libraries whose APIs change. Its project offers both an MCP option and a CLI-plus-skills mode.
Use it as a documentation-retrieval aid, not as proof that generated code is correct. Context7 says its library listings are community-contributed and that it cannot guarantee every project’s accuracy, completeness, or security.

Microsoft Learn MCP Server is a focused choice for developers working with Microsoft products and documentation. Microsoft documents using it with GitHub Copilot in VS Code. Its listed tools include Microsoft documentation search and fetch, plus code-sample search.
If your projects rarely rely on Microsoft documentation, this server may add little to your workflow. Microsoft’s setup page was last updated on 2026-02-12.
Rank #4
5. MCP filesystem server for scoped project files
The MCP filesystem server supports reading, writing, searching, and managing files. Its access is limited to directories specified at startup or provided through client Roots. The server documentation recommends restricting allowed directories.
Start with the workspace directory rather than broad access to your home directory. The server distinguishes read-only tools from mutating ones; overwriting, editing, and moving files require particular care.
How to choose which servers to enable
Start with the server that solves a task you already perform, then add another only when it contributes a distinct capability. Before enabling one, check these factors:
- Workflow fit: Does it support a task you actually want your agent to handle?
- Access boundary: Which service, files, or other data can it reach?
- Action risk: Can it write files, change repository state, or trigger external actions?
- Setup needs: Does it require a runtime, credentials, or other configuration?
- Feature overlap: Does VS Code or another tool you already use cover the same job?
For browser interaction, VS Code’s guide recommends considering built-in browser tools first. For repository work, GitHub’s configurable toolsets let you limit which capabilities are exposed; for local file operations, filesystem directory scoping limits the server’s reach. These are practical reasons to assess permissions alongside convenience, not after installation.

VS Code can show MCP servers in the Extensions view under @mcp. You can install a server to your user profile or workspace and manage it through the UI. For new configurations, the current guide recommends portable locations such as workspace-root .mcp.json and ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json (or $COPILOT_HOME/mcp-config.json). It also documents .vscode/mcp.json in VS Code’s servers format and workspace-root .mcp.json in a portable mcpServers format. The code --add-mcp command is another documented installation route. See VS Code’s setup guide for the current configuration details.
Where a server runs depends on where it is configured: user-profile servers run locally, while remote-workspace or remote-user configuration can run on a remote machine. Keep API keys out of configuration text; use supported input variables or environment files instead.

Review security before connecting a server
Visual Studio Code warns: “Local MCP servers can run arbitrary code on your machine.” — Visual Studio Code, “Add and manage MCP servers in VS Code”.
Before enabling a server, review its source, publisher, configuration, access scope, authentication, and ability to make changes. VS Code’s guide describes sandbox options for local stdio servers on macOS and Linux. Use the narrowest practical access, disable capabilities that are not needed, and be especially cautious with tools that execute code or modify data.
For GitHub, limit enabled toolsets to the task; for the filesystem server, permit only the directories the workflow requires. For Playwright, do not enable the arbitrary-code tool for an untrusted client. These controls address different risks, so one does not replace another.
