Linux can make five common developer workflows feel more direct: installing software from a distribution’s repositories, using Linux-first shell tools, choosing and shaping a distribution, making many software changes without restarting, and working in an environment close to a Linux deployment target. These are practical advantages, not proof that Linux is universally better: Windows has PowerShell and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and the best fit depends on what you need to run.
1. Installing software and dependencies through a package manager
On a Linux distribution, software available in its repositories is commonly installed through the distribution’s package workflow. The package manager can install declared dependencies alongside an application, reducing the need to find and install each dependency manually. The exact tools, package formats, available software, and repository policies vary by distribution.
Ubuntu’s comparison page describes this general approach, but it was last edited on 2008-11-03. Its broad claims should not be treated as current measurements or as evidence that Windows software installation is inherently difficult. Ubuntu’s comparison page is useful only as a high-level, dated description of the package workflow.

Bash and utilities such as sed and awk are at home in Linux environments. Scripts and tools may assume Linux paths, file behavior, or other system conventions; running them in a different environment can introduce compatibility friction. Microsoft describes WSL as primarily intended for developers and specifically points to these command-line tools and the issues that can arise when Linux-oriented tools encounter Windows assumptions. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
This is not a claim that Windows cannot script. Windows includes PowerShell, and WSL lets users run a GNU/Linux environment alongside the Windows desktop. Microsoft describes WSL as providing most Linux command-line tools, utilities, and applications directly on Windows, without a traditional virtual machine or dual boot. Microsoft’s WSL overview
3. Choosing and shaping a Linux environment
Linux is a family of distributions rather than one fixed desktop setup. WSL itself supports installing multiple distributions, importing a custom distribution, and selecting a default. Its terminal can also be customized. These options make it possible to keep distinct environments for different projects or preferences, though they are useful only if you want that choice and control.

Windows also supports customization; the difference here is the breadth of Linux distributions and the ability to choose a Linux environment for a particular workflow. Microsoft documents distribution installation and development configuration in its WSL installation guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Making many software changes without restarting
Ubuntu’s comparison page says most software can be installed, started, stopped, or reconfigured without a reboot, while identifying kernel changes as an exception. Because that page dates to 2008, this is a qualified description of an Ubuntu software-management advantage—not a current, measured comparison with Windows updates or a promise that every Linux change takes effect without restarting. 5. Developing close to the Linux system you will deploy to
If your application is destined for a Linux server, developing in Linux can expose Linux-specific assumptions earlier. Microsoft notes that tools and libraries may rely on Linux paths or behavior and can encounter problems when used on Windows; it also identifies local development and testing before deployment to Linux as a WSL use case. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ
A native Linux installation gives the project a Linux environment directly. WSL can provide a Linux environment while retaining the Windows desktop, and may be sufficient when you need Linux tools without replacing Windows. Neither option guarantees that every production difference disappears: the deployment system, libraries, configuration, and services still matter.

When WSL is enough—and when native Linux may fit better
| Need | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Use Bash, Linux command-line tools, or Linux development utilities while keeping Windows apps | WSL may be enough | Microsoft describes WSL as running a GNU/Linux environment alongside the Windows desktop. Microsoft’s WSL overview |
| Work in a Linux environment as the main operating system | Native Linux may fit better | It makes Linux the host environment rather than a feature running alongside Windows. |
| Run applications, use devices, or follow workflows that require Windows | Keep Windows available | Linux advantages for developer workflows do not establish compatibility with Windows-only applications, devices, or processes. |
| Move files between Windows and Linux tools | Choose file locations deliberately | WSL can access Windows files through mounted drives, but Linux-root files use Linux behaviors such as chmod, chown, and case sensitivity; mounted Windows drives follow Windows behavior. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ |
The choice is therefore less about whether one operating system wins every task and more about matching the environment to the work. Microsoft positions WSL especially for developers, open-source contributors, and people deploying to Linux servers. The available evidence does not establish universal Linux superiority in speed, security, privacy, gaming, hardware support, or performance on older computers.
