For business majors, the right laptop is the one that runs your courses’ required software and fits your campus routine—not simply the one with the longest feature list. Check your school’s current operating-system and application requirements first. Then compare this practical shortlist: it includes Windows models, a macOS option for compatible coursework, and a larger-screen alternative. These are options to investigate, not five machines ranked by comparative testing.

Start with your college’s software requirements

Before choosing a model, ask your college or department which applications your courses require and whether they need Windows. This matters especially in finance, where specialized tools may not run on macOS or may require a campus remote-access workaround.

Lehigh’s 2023–2024 guidance says several required courses use Windows-only software and strongly advises Finance majors to use Windows. It also warns that using a VPN and remote virtual software as a Mac workaround may be cumbersome and not seamless. That advice is specific to Lehigh and that academic year; check your own institution’s current requirements rather than treating it as a universal rule. Lehigh also advises against Chromebooks for its program because they do not work for some software-based course assignments.

Five laptops to consider for business school

This shortlist draws on institutional and manufacturer recommendations plus a published student-laptop guide. The available sources do not provide comparable tests of all five choices, so the list is organized around student needs rather than a performance ranking.

4. Apple MacBook Air M5: for coursework that works with macOS

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 student laptop guide lists the MacBook Air M5. Its test unit recorded 15 hours and 30 minutes of battery life in that publication’s testing; this is a test result for that unit, not a runtime guarantee for every configuration or a promise of how long it will last during your classes. Keep the Mac on your shortlist only after confirming that required applications run on macOS or that your school supports a workable remote-access option. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 student laptop guide

5. Dell Pro 16 Laptop: consider it if you want more screen area

Dell lists the Pro 16 in its business-student material. A larger display may appeal if you work with wide spreadsheets or prefer more room for documents; a 14-inch model is generally easier to carry. The available sources do not establish a measured productivity or portability comparison between the Pro 16 and Pro 14, so weigh the screen-size tradeoff in person if possible. • Required software and operating system: Confirm whether classes need Windows, macOS, or a campus-supported remote environment. Ask about specific courses and majors, not just general college recommendations.
  • Memory and storage: 16 GB of memory and roughly 512 GB of SSD storage are useful starting points for multitasking, applications, and coursework—but not universal requirements. Lehigh’s cited minimum recommendations are 16 GB and 500 GB of storage, while Babson’s 2026–2027 selected configuration has 16 GB and a 512 GB SSD. Follow your school’s current requirements if they differ.
  • Weight and battery: Consider how long you carry the laptop between classes and whether you can charge it during the day. Published battery tests are useful context, but actual runtime varies with configuration, workload, settings, and battery condition.
  • Display and keyboard: Choose a screen size and resolution you can comfortably use for documents and spreadsheets, and a keyboard that feels suitable for long assignments. Larger screens can provide more working area but may be less convenient to carry.
  • Ports and connectivity: Check the actual configuration for USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, and any adapter needs. Consider how you will connect to classroom projectors, external monitors, storage devices, and campus networks.
  • Price, warranty, and configuration: Compare current prices and service terms for the exact configuration you would buy. The cited sources do not establish a common price comparison across the five options.

Are there specific software requirements business students should consider?

Yes. The decisive requirement may be a course application that works only on a particular operating system, rather than the general software most students use. Ask your department about applications for your intended major, whether a personal device must run them locally, and whether the school supports remote access if it does not. Finance majors should make this check especially early: Lehigh’s 2023–2024 packet is one institution-specific example of Windows-only course software, not evidence that every finance program has the same rule.

How to narrow the shortlist

  1. Get current requirements from your school. Ask your department or IT office about required applications, operating systems, minimum memory and storage, and any supported remote-access option.
  2. Remove incompatible choices. If a required application needs Windows and your school does not provide a workable alternative, prioritize a Windows configuration. Do not assume a Mac or Chromebook will be supported.
  3. Set a configuration baseline. Use your school’s specifications first. If it has no stated requirement, 16 GB of memory and around 512 GB of SSD storage are sensible comparison points drawn from the institutional examples here, not a guarantee of suitability for every course.
  4. Compare the exact models. Check weight, display, keyboard, ports, warranty, and current price for the configurations actually available to you. Model-family names alone do not tell you what components are included.
  5. Make the portability tradeoff explicit. Decide whether you would rather carry a more compact laptop or have a larger display for spreadsheet-heavy work, and consider how often you can charge between classes.

Which option makes sense for different students?

  • You have not confirmed specialized software needs: Resolve compatibility first; a Windows laptop is the safer direction only if your school’s requirements point that way.
  • You want an institution-grounded Windows reference: Use Babson’s 2026–2027 ThinkPad T14s 2-in-1 configuration as a concrete example to compare, not as a universal campus standard.
  • You prefer macOS: Consider the MacBook Air M5 if your courses and institution support the applications and access methods you need.
  • You value screen area: Consider the Dell Pro 16 alongside a 14-inch option, while accounting for the carry-size tradeoff.
  • You are comparing business-focused Windows families: Investigate Dell’s Pro 14 or a specific ThinkPad T Series configuration, checking the components and service terms of the listing you intend to buy.
