There is no objective set of five “best” headphones for every listener. Current buying guides disagree on their overall winner, and the right choice depends on fit, sound preferences, noise cancellation, battery needs, and the devices you use. This shortlist instead matches five current premium wireless models to different priorities.

How to choose among these five headphones

Start with what matters most in daily use, rather than treating a reviewer’s top pick as a universal ranking. For frequent flights, weigh noise cancellation, comfort over long sessions, battery life, and how easily the headphones pack. If you mainly listen at home, sound character and fit may matter more than foldability. Check local price, warranty, current availability, and the exact model generation before buying.

  • Sound: Decide whether you prefer a particular presentation, and check what EQ or personalization options are available.
  • Noise cancellation and transparency: Consider how much outside noise you need to reduce and whether you often want to hear your surroundings.
  • Fit and weight: Headband pressure, ear-cup depth, and total weight vary in how they feel from person to person. Try a pair when practical; comfort can matter more on a long commute than small differences in a review score.
  • Battery and charging: Treat published runtime as a specification, not a guarantee of your own listening time. The figures below come from different sources and are not results from one controlled side-by-side test.
  • Devices and connections: Check multipoint support, Bluetooth codec compatibility, and wired listening options against your phone and computer. What Hi-Fi? specifically recommends considering battery life, codecs, and multipoint when choosing wireless headphones.
  • Portability and upkeep: Look at folding design, case size, durability, and whether any parts are replaceable.

Five headphones for different priorities

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3: a balanced premium option

Tom’s Guide placed the PX7 S3 first in its Oct. 2, 2026 headphone guide and lists 30 hours of battery life. Its review discusses the model’s sound and natural transparency. That makes it a strong option to audition if you want an all-round premium set, but one guide’s ranking does not establish a universal winner. The same guide describes Sony as a strong all-rounder and Bose as the stronger noise-cancellation choice. Read Tom’s Guide’s current headphone guide.

Sony WH-1000XM6: wireless all-rounder

What Hi-Fi? names the WH-1000XM6 its best wireless over-ear all-rounder in its 2026 guide and gives it a 30-hour battery specification. The publication praises its sound, competitive noise cancellation, comfort, folding design, and newer Bluetooth features. It also notes that the headphones do not support aptX HD, have a comparatively large case, and do not provide audio over USB-C. Those trade-offs are worth checking against your devices and packing needs. See What Hi-Fi?’s over-ear headphone guide.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): prioritize noise cancellation

Bose says this generation has its best noise cancellation and describes its earcups as plush; those are manufacturer claims. Its product page lists 30 hours of battery life, USB-C, and Bluetooth 5.4, as well as a 15-minute quick charge for up to three hours of listening. Tom’s Guide describes the noise cancellation as exceptionally effective while noting trade-offs in sound and build quality. Consider this model if reducing surrounding noise is a leading priority, while judging comfort and sound for yourself. Check Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) specifications.

Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless: battery-conscious alternative

What Hi-Fi? describes the Momentum 5 Wireless as a less expensive rival to Sony, with a rich, detailed presentation, strong battery life, and a replaceable battery. Its 2026 guide reports up to 57 hours with ANC on. The guide still awards its top all-rounder spot to Sony, so think of the Momentum 5 as an alternative rather than a definitive upgrade. Check current availability and price in your region. Read What Hi-Fi?’s comparison context.

Apple AirPods Max 2: for Apple-centered setups

Apple’s current product page describes the AirPods Max 2, including its charging case and IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance. Tom’s Guide lists 20 hours of battery life, finds the headphones heavy, and says Android users should not expect the same app settings. The model is a natural candidate if you value Apple ecosystem integration; compare its weight, runtime, price, and cross-platform feature support before choosing it for mixed-device use. When a previous-generation model may be worth considering

Sennheiser’s Momentum 4 Wireless is a separate option for buyers focused on long battery life, not a sixth entry in the five-model shortlist. Sennheiser’s current US product page lists up to 60 hours of playback with ANC on, adaptive ANC and transparency, a 42 mm dynamic driver, and quick charging. Check regional stock, firmware, and current pricing before comparing it with newer models; its published runtime is also not directly comparable to figures measured under different conditions. See Sennheiser’s US Momentum 4 Wireless specifications.

Match the shortlist to your listening habits

  • For a first all-rounder to try: Compare the PX7 S3 and WH-1000XM6, which lead different editorial guides. Decide based on fit, sound, portability, and device compatibility rather than guide order.
  • For especially effective noise cancellation: Put the Bose model on your audition list, then check how its sound and fit suit you.
  • For a longer stated runtime: Compare the Momentum 5 Wireless and, if a prior generation is acceptable, the Momentum 4 Wireless. The figures come from different sources, so use them as specifications rather than a controlled head-to-head result.
  • For Apple ecosystem features: Assess AirPods Max 2 alongside its weight and battery trade-offs, especially if you also use Android devices.

These are predominantly portable, closed-back models. If your priority is home listening rather than travel, wired open-back headphones are another category to consider: What Hi-Fi? notes that open-back designs tend to leak sound and are more often suited to home use.
