Five Gboard settings are worth reviewing: text correction, Glide typing, voice typing, keyboard languages and personalization. They are not universal must-changes; the right choices depend on how you type, which languages you use and how much adaptation you want from the keyboard. Google’s setup instructions put these controls under Gboard’s Settings menu, though labels and paths can vary by Android version and phone maker.
Open Gboard settings
- Open an app with a text field and tap the field to bring up Gboard.
- Tap the keyboard’s feature menu, choose More, then Settings.
On some phones, you can also open Android Settings and go to System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. The exact route can differ on customized Android versions. See Google’s Change your keyboard settings instructions.
1. Review text correction before changing it
Text correction controls suggestions and automatic changes. If Gboard alters text in ways you do not want, review its correction options rather than disabling every aid at once. Google’s troubleshooting guidance suggests turning off Smart Compose or Auto-capitalization if either is causing unwanted changes. The trade-off is that you lose those conveniences.

2. Try Glide typing if you prefer swiping
With Glide typing, slide your finger from letter to letter to spell a word instead of tapping each key. It may suit one-handed or fast typing, but it is a matter of preference, not an upgrade everyone needs. Google notes that Glide typing is not supported for every language.
Find it under Gboard Settings → Glide typing. A second route on some phones is Android Settings → System → Languages & input → Virtual keyboard → Gboard. Menu names and steps may vary by manufacturer or Android version. See Google’s Glide typing guidance.

3. Decide whether voice typing fits your needs
Voice typing lets you dictate into a text field. In Gboard Settings, open Voice typing to review the available controls; when the keyboard is open, tap its microphone to start dictation if the option is available. Talk-to-text does not work with every language.

For detailed voice edits, it says the command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google’s servers to process the request. 4. Set up the keyboard languages you actually use
Add the keyboard languages and layouts you need, and remove ones you never use if they make switching cumbersome. To switch among configured languages while typing, touch and hold the space bar and select a language. Gboard’s keyboard language is separate from your Android system language: changing one does not change the other.

5. Choose whether Gboard personalizes your typing
Google says Gboard personalization adapts to patterns in your typing and voice-typing use. If you value a keyboard that learns from your use, you may prefer to leave Personalisation on. If you would rather not have that adaptation, review the Personalisation control and turn it off. Google also says turning it off can reduce input lag; that is a troubleshooting note, not a guarantee that every phone will feel faster.

Other Gboard features are not universal
- Handwriting: An optional layout for supported languages. Google says it is not available in every language; handwriting can be entered with a finger or stylus.
- Proofread: Google’s help page specifies Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, English and the United States as eligibility requirements.
- Writing tools: These require a supported device, the latest Gboard version and Gboard set as the default keyboard. Device and language support is limited and may change.
Because these features depend on language, device or region, check Google’s current instructions before looking for them in your keyboard.
