Some GameCube games are still a joy to play, but the years have made their rough edges harder to ignore. For me, The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, Luigi’s Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine each pair a dated frustration with an appeal that survives it. That is a personal verdict, not a claim that every player will find the same flaws.
1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
What has aged badly
The long stretches of sailing can make the journey between islands feel slower than the discoveries at either end. When I want to get on with an objective, watching the horizon pass can test my patience.

Why I still love it
The sea also gives the adventure room to breathe. An island appearing in the distance feels like an invitation to explore, and the bright, expressive presentation gives the world a personality that is easy to return to. The sailing is both the thing I’m most likely to grumble about and part of what makes the game feel like a voyage rather than a checklist.
2. F-Zero GX
What has aged badly
Its speed and demanding handling leave little time to recover from a mistake. The intensity that makes a clean run exciting can also make a rough one feel unforgiving, especially when I am trying to learn a track rather than race it confidently.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Why I still love it
When the turns click and I string together a fast run, the game’s pace becomes the point. It makes concentration feel physical: I’m reading the course, making quick corrections and trying to keep momentum. That challenge is a big part of the satisfaction, even when it sends me back to try again.
3. Soulcalibur II
What has aged badly
Returning to a fighting game built around older expectations can expose how much patience it asks of a newcomer. Learning the move lists and timing takes commitment before a match starts to feel like a conversation rather than a blur of guesses.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Why I still love it
The weapon-based cast gives each fighter a distinct presence, and the best exchanges feel satisfying because they reward reading an opponent as well as knowing a character. I still enjoy the simple pleasure of choosing a fighter, learning a few reliable moves and seeing a match turn on a well-timed decision.
4. Luigi’s Mansion
What has aged badly
The deliberate pace and room-by-room structure can feel fussy when I want a more fluid ghost-hunting adventure. Its approach is built around searching, positioning and figuring out what a room is asking me to do; if I’m impatient, that rhythm can feel like a stop-start routine.
Rank #3
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Why I still love it
That slower rhythm suits the haunted-house mood. Exploring a room and uncovering its odd details makes the mansion feel like a place to investigate, not merely a corridor between fights. Luigi’s nervous presence adds warmth to the spooky setup, and the compact adventure keeps its own character.
5. Super Mario Sunshine
What has aged badly
The camera and movement can demand more adjustment than I want from a platform game. In tricky sections, keeping a useful view while lining up a jump can make a mistake feel less like my timing was off and more like I was wrestling the setup.
Rank #4
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Why I still love it
When the movement works, it is wonderfully playful. The water-powered tool gives Mario more ways to move through a space, and the tropical setting makes the adventure feel distinct from other entries in the series. I keep coming back for the pleasure of experimenting with that movement, even when a camera adjustment interrupts the fun.

Nintendo’s UK GameCube Classics lineup for Switch 2 includes all five games named here: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur II, Luigi’s Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine. Access to the collection requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo also announced Super Mario Sunshine for the service in August 2026. The collection offers customisable controls, so check its current options if you want to adjust the setup.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 GameCube controller is wireless, recharges over USB-C and is made for GameCube Classics. For a different configuration, Nintendo says an original GameCube controller can be used with Switch in TV mode through a separately sold GameCube Controller Adapter; Nintendo specifies supported Switch consoles running system menu version 5.0.0 or later. That support statement concerns Switch in TV mode and does not establish that the original controller works with Switch 2.
Nintendo provides downloadable manuals for the GameCube system, accessories and selected games. A manual can help you check original instructions and controller conventions where one is available; it cannot tell you whether a particular control scheme will feel comfortable now.
