When a manufacturer or online service shuts down, a gadget can lose cloud features even while its hardware still works. In a few cases, developers and volunteers preserved those features—or gave the device another use. These five examples show different kinds of second life, not a guarantee that every unit still works today.
What “better” means when support ends
Here, “better” means more useful to some owners after official support ended: a controller gained a use beyond its original service, while other devices benefited from community-run services, open-source work, or connection patches. Those efforts are model- and service-specific. A project reported as working in the past is not proof that its servers or tools remain available now.
Five gadgets with a second life
| Gadget | What ended | What changed | Who helped | Current operation confirmed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pebble smartwatch | The company ceased operations in 2016; later, Fitbit planned to shut down services that supported parts of the watch ecosystem. | Rebble reproduced services and helped preserve the ecosystem; Google released most Pebble OS source code in 2025. | Former employees and developers, followed by open-source contributors. | Not established by the cited sources. |
| Google Stadia Controller | Google’s Stadia cloud gaming service shut down. | Google announced a self-serve firmware tool to enable Bluetooth connections, allowing the controller to be used as a general Bluetooth gamepad. | Google provided the announced firmware tool. | Not established by the cited report; it documents the announcement, not present tool availability. |
| Chumby | The company ceased operations in 2012. | Volunteers kept backend support going for a period, with revival efforts aimed at preserving the smart alarm clock’s features. | Volunteers. | Not established by the cited reporting. |
| Nabaztag | Official support ended in 2011. | Open-source efforts later revived the Wi-Fi robotic rabbit; a separate crowdfunding campaign proposed a Raspberry Pi-based version. | Open-source contributors and campaign organizers. | Not established for original devices or current project services. |
| Sony Dash HID-C10 | Sony discontinued support for the display. | A community patch enabled HID-C10 displays to connect to Chumby servers. | Community developers. | Not established by the cited report. |
Pebble: an ecosystem preserved, not simply unlocked
Pebble watches depended on online services for features such as the app store, weather, language packs, and voice dictation. After Fitbit planned to shut down the servers behind those functions, developers and former employees formed Rebble to reproduce services and keep parts of the ecosystem usable. iFixit’s 2019 account describes that revival: Rebble’s effort to give Pebble watches an afterlife.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Google announced on January 27, 2025 that it was releasing most of the Pebble OS source code. The company says more than two million watches were sold over four years and developers created more than ten thousand apps and watchfaces. Those figures describe the scale of the original ecosystem, not current activity. The source release also has important limits: proprietary chipset support and the Bluetooth stack were removed, and the code will not compile or link as provided. Open source can help maintain software, but it does not automatically replace proprietary components or produce buildable firmware. Google’s Pebble OS source-release announcement explains both the release and the remaining work.

Stadia Controller: a different use for the hardware
Unlike the other cases, the Stadia Controller’s second life was a broadly different use: Bluetooth gamepad functionality outside Google’s cloud gaming service. In January 2023, Google announced a self-serve firmware tool to enable Bluetooth connections after Stadia shut down. Ars Technica reported the announcement, but that report does not establish whether the tool is still available today. Ars Technica’s report on the Stadia Controller Bluetooth announcement.
Chumby: an alarm clock kept useful by volunteers
Chumby combined an alarm clock with glanceable information and media delivered through network services. After the company ceased operations in 2012, volunteers continued backend support for a period, and revival efforts sought to preserve the device’s usefulness. That history is not confirmation that Chumby servers operate now. Engadget’s retrospective covers Chumby and other community revivals: gadgets kept alive by their communities.

Nabaztag: an open-source afterlife for a Wi-Fi rabbit
The Nabaztag was a Wi-Fi-connected robotic rabbit. Engadget reported that support ended in 2011 and that open-source efforts later revived the device. The same account mentions a crowdfunding campaign for a Raspberry Pi-based version; that does not mean every original rabbit works today, nor does it establish that setup is simple or current project services remain active. Sony Dash HID-C10: a community patch restored a connection
Sony’s Dash HID-C10 was a network-connected display. After Sony discontinued support, a community patch allowed the device to connect to Chumby servers, restoring network functions at the time of the report. The report does not verify that those servers or the patch remain available today. Engadget’s retrospective on the Dash and other devices.

What to check before relying on an old connected gadget
If you want to keep using a discontinued device, separate what its hardware can do locally from what depends on a company’s servers. Then verify the exact model and the current state of any replacement service before investing time or money.

- Identify the model and firmware. Community fixes may apply only to a particular hardware revision or software version.
- Find out which features require the cloud. A working screen or buttons do not guarantee that an app store, voice feature, account login, or media stream will still function.
- Check present-day project status. Historical reports show that a revival happened, not that its server, firmware tool, or instructions are still maintained.
- Understand the limits of open source. Source code may omit proprietary drivers, chipset support, or other components needed to build and run firmware.
- Keep expectations specific. A successful community patch or service replacement for one device does not establish compatibility with other models.
