You can start building DIY tech with one LED and a Raspberry Pi Pico, then add a button, buzzer, light sensor, and—once you are comfortable with the basics—Wi-Fi. These five low-voltage projects are designed to teach one new idea at a time. Build a small version, test it, and troubleshoot before adding another component.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s beginner Pico pathway is intended for newcomers to physical computing. Its projects introduce LEDs, buttons, switches, buzzers, and potentiometers. The five builds below use that progression, with the reaction game and sensor projects adapted from documented patterns rather than presented as exact official tutorials.

What you need to get started

A Raspberry Pi Pico can run the wired projects; the Wi-Fi sensor page requires a Pico W. You can buy components separately or use a kit, but check its contents rather than assuming it includes every part.

Basic parts

  • A Raspberry Pi Pico or, for the final project, a Pico W
  • A solderless breadboard and jumper wires
  • LEDs and resistors suitable for the components and circuit
  • A push-button and a buzzer for the middle projects
  • A light-dependent resistor (LDR) for the sensor light
  • A USB cable or another suitable low-voltage power supply

The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s free physical computing course lists common circuit components and emphasizes choosing the correct resistor. A breadboard tutorial from Raspberry Pi Press explains the LED circuit parts and how breadboards work. Breadboard holes connect in strips, not as one continuous set of linked holes: follow a wiring diagram and check which holes share a connection.

Software and setup

The Foundation’s Pico pathway uses Thonny, Raspberry Pi Pico firmware installed through Thonny, and the picozero library. The Pico W project also needs Wi-Fi configuration and web-server code. The Foundation’s pathway and course are free learning resources.

Keep every build USB-powered or use another suitable low-voltage supply. Check wiring against the guide for your specific circuit, use an appropriate resistor, and disconnect power before changing connections. These projects do not require mains wiring.

1. Make an LED firefly blink

This is the simplest starting point: make one LED switch on and off in a repeating pattern. Raspberry Pi’s beginner pathway includes an LED firefly project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build and learn

Use the Pico’s onboard LED if your board and chosen guide support it. Otherwise, connect a separate LED to the breadboard with a correctly selected resistor, following a circuit diagram. Write a short program that turns the LED on, waits, turns it off, and waits again.

Once it works, change one delay and observe how the blink pattern changes. If the LED stays dark, check its orientation, the resistor and wiring, and whether the program is running before changing multiple things at once.

2. Add a button for a mood light

Next, give the circuit an input: a push-button that changes an LED’s state or cycles through colors. This builds on the Foundation pathway’s button components and mood-indicator project.

Build and learn

Connect a button and an LED, or use a multicolor LED if your circuit guide supports one. In the program, read the button state and use it to switch the light on or off. A simple extension is to cycle between colors each time the button is pressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the button input before adding color-cycling behavior. If one press registers repeatedly, the program may be reading the held button as several presses; if nothing happens, check that the button legs occupy the correct breadboard rows and that the program reads the same input pin you wired.

3. Build a buzzer reaction game

Combine an input and two outputs: the program gives a signal, then the player presses a button to respond and gets a light or sound result. This is an adaptation using the pathway’s supported buttons, buzzers, and LEDs—not a claim that the Foundation publishes this exact game.

Build and learn

Wire a button, buzzer, and LED according to a suitable low-voltage circuit diagram. Program the Pico to wait briefly, sound or flash a start signal, then detect the button press and provide feedback. Begin with a fixed wait rather than adding random timing or scorekeeping; add those only after the basic sequence works.

Test each part on its own if the game does not respond as expected: confirm the LED can signal, the buzzer can sound, and the button input changes when pressed. Then combine the working pieces into the game sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Make a light-sensing night light

Add a sensor so the LED responds to ambient brightness. Raspberry Pi’s project roundup describes a Pico stair-light pattern that uses a passive infrared sensor and a light-dependent resistor to trigger lighting only when it is dark. For a first build, simplify the idea to one light sensor and one LED.

Build and learn

Connect an LDR in a circuit that lets the Pico read changing light levels, then use the reading to decide when to turn on the LED. Test the sensor by covering it and exposing it to light. Once you can see the reading change, choose a threshold and make the light respond to it.

If the response is reversed, adjust how the program interprets the reading; the direction depends on the sensor circuit. Avoid adding motion detection until the brightness-controlled version works reliably.

5. Put a sensor reading on a Wi-Fi page

This stretch project adds networking: a Pico W reads a sensor and serves its value on a small web page. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started material describes connecting Pico W to Wi-Fi, serving a page, controlling an output, and receiving temperature data.

Build and learn

First confirm that the Pico W can connect to your Wi-Fi network using the setup instructions for your board and software. Then start with a basic page served by the board. Add a sensor reading to the page only after the network connection and page work separately.

If the page does not load, check that the Pico W joined the intended network and that you are using the address provided by your program. If the page loads but the reading does not update, isolate the sensor-read and page-display steps before combining them again.

Which project should you choose?

Project Additional parts Wiring and code Wi-Fi What you see
LED firefly LED and suitable resistor if not using the onboard LED Lowest complexity; one output No A repeating blink pattern
Button mood light Button; optionally a multicolor LED Adds an input and button logic No A light controlled by a press
Buzzer reaction game Button, buzzer, LED Combines an input, outputs, and a sequence No A signal and a response
Light-sensing night light LDR and LED Adds sensor readings and a threshold No A light that responds to brightness
Wi-Fi sensor page Pico W and a suitable sensor Adds network setup and web-server code Yes A sensor value on a web page

Start with the LED if you have not used a breadboard or written code for hardware before. Choose the button or buzzer next to learn how a program reads an input and controls an output. The sensor builds add readings; the Pico W page adds network concepts.

How to make troubleshooting easier

  • Change one thing at a time, then run the program again.
  • Check the wiring against the exact diagram for your circuit and verify breadboard connections.
  • Disconnect power before moving wires or components.
  • Test components separately before combining them into a larger program.
  • Keep the first version small; add extra behavior only after the basic build works.

Addressable LED strips and larger lighting installations are a separate step: Raspberry Pi’s project roundup notes that larger setups may need extra power injection. They are not necessary for these beginner builds.
