There is no evidence-backed universal top five here: current specifications are verified for two devices, not five. Those two point to distinct choices: BOOX Note Air5 C for Android apps and color documents, and Kobo Elipsa 2E for Kobo reading with handwritten markup. For other contenders, compare the current model, bundle and regional price on the maker’s own product page before choosing.

Choose by workflow, not by a universal ranking

E Ink tablets can look similar while serving different purposes. A focused notebook prioritizes writing; a large-format eReader makes reading and annotation central; an Android-based device offers broader app access. The best fit depends on which tradeoff matters in your work.

  • Handwriting and fewer distractions: Start with a writing-first notebook. Verify its current writing tools, export options, cloud workflow and included stylus on the manufacturer’s page.
  • Reading and marking up books or PDFs: A device tied to a specific ebook library may make reading and annotation more convenient, but check document permissions and supported formats.
  • Apps and color documents: An Android E Ink tablet can offer more app flexibility, though E Ink refresh behavior differs from a conventional LCD tablet.

Model Display Workflow and software Storage and expansion Writing bundle and extras Price and region
BOOX Note Air5 C 10.3-inch Kaleido 3; 300 ppi black and white, 150 ppi color Android 15 and Google Play access; suited to app flexibility and color documents 64 GB; microSD support Pen3 included; compatible protective and keyboard covers listed separately US$499.99 on BOOX’s store when accessed in 2026; price and availability may change
Kobo Elipsa 2E 10.3-inch E Ink Carta 1200 touchscreen; 227 ppi Kobo ebook and PDF reading with handwritten markup; PDF annotation may be blocked by DRM or permissions 32 GB Stylus 2 included; SleepCover sold separately US$399.99 on Kobo’s US store when accessed in 2026; price and availability may change

BOOX Note Air5 C: for apps and color documents

BOOX lists a 3,700 mAh battery, warm and cold front lighting, 6 GB RAM and an approximate weight of 430 g for the Note Air5 C. Its color resolution is 150 ppi, compared with 300 ppi in black and white, so color does not have the same specified sharpness as monochrome. Google Play access broadens the available app choices, but it does not establish that every Android app will behave smoothly on an E Ink display.

Kobo Elipsa 2E: for Kobo reading and handwritten markup

Kobo specifies adjustable ComfortLight PRO, Bluetooth and USB-C on the Elipsa 2E. Its included Stylus 2 can be used to mark up eBooks and PDFs, but Kobo notes that DRM or permission restrictions can prevent PDF annotation. The device is not waterproof. Kobo describes battery life as weeks depending on individual use, not as a controlled comparative test.

The SleepCover is a separate purchase, so include it when calculating the price of the setup you want. Kobo lists the Elipsa 2E at US$399.99 in its US store; see the Kobo Elipsa 2E product page for specifications and current regional availability.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

How to evaluate the other three shortlist candidates

reMarkable writing-first devices, Kindle Scribe models, Supernote notebooks and other BOOX or Kobo devices are plausible categories to compare, but a five-model ranking is not established by the available current specifications. Do not assume a model name, feature or price from an older review is still current. For each exact model, verify these points on its maker’s live product page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Writing: Confirm stylus inclusion, handwriting tools, export options and any subscription or account requirements.
  2. Reading and markup: Check ebook-store access, supported file formats, document annotation and restrictions such as DRM.
  3. Display: Compare screen size and, for color models, separate monochrome and color resolution figures.
  4. Flexibility: Establish whether the device uses a closed reading or note-taking environment or offers broader app access.
  5. Total setup cost: Add any separately sold cover, keyboard or other required accessory; confirm what is actually included in the regional bundle.
  6. Portability and lighting: Check weight and front-light features against how and where you plan to use it.
  7. Price and stock: Verify the country, date, seller and exact generation before relying on a listing.

What matters most in a final choice

Compare the whole workflow rather than a single display number. App access may matter more than a small resolution difference if you need a particular tool; an included stylus or separately sold cover can change the real setup cost; and a reading ecosystem can be more important than general-purpose flexibility. Battery-life statements are especially hard to compare without matching usage and test conditions.
