A gaming PC can be upgraded and used for work or creative projects, but buying one can mean a higher initial outlay and more setup decisions than buying a console. Whether those tradeoffs matter depends on your games, budget, available space, existing equipment, and plans for the computer.
1. The upfront cost can be high
TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 buying guide estimates that a competent 1080p gaming PC starts at about US$800, £700, or AU$1,200. Its estimate for a mid-range 1440p system is about US$1,500, £1,500, or AU$2,300; some high-end systems reach roughly US$3,500, £3,500, or AU$5,000 and up. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed prices or quotes for specific configurations, and prices can change. Read TechRadar’s 2026 buying guide.
Those figures describe the PC itself, not necessarily the cost of everything you need to play. If you already own a suitable computer for other uses, the gaming PC may also replace or consolidate some of that spending; if gaming is your only purpose, compare the total setup cost with alternatives rather than focusing on the tower price alone.

2. The tower may not include the rest of the setup
A desktop gaming setup may also call for a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and these are often separate purchases. A console package may include a controller. That does not mean every PC buyer must buy every accessory: existing compatible equipment can reduce the amount you need to spend.

Space belongs in the same calculation. A tower, screen, and peripherals need somewhere to fit, so consider your desk and room before choosing a desktop. If you are comparing a PC with a console, list the equipment you already own and price only what is missing on each side.
3. Parts and prices can change
Component availability and prices are not fixed. TechRadar reported that shortages and tariffs had affected PC parts and consoles, and that some components for custom builds could be harder to find. This can make a planned configuration harder to assemble at its expected price.

One company-specific example shows why broad market claims need care: on August 7, 2026, NZXT said supplier GPU costs had risen by as much as 36%, and that prices for affected NZXT gaming PCs and subscriptions increased by approximately 5–11%. Those figures describe NZXT’s suppliers and affected products; they do not establish price changes across the entire gaming PC market. See NZXT’s news page.
Console prices can change as well. Xbox Wire announced that, effective August 1, 2026, US prices increased by $100 for 512 GB Xbox models and $150 for 1 TB models. Those changes are a reminder not to assume consoles are immune to price shifts, but they are not a direct PC-versus-console cost comparison. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.

4. Setup can involve more steps than a console
HP’s 2026 comparison describes PC setup as potentially involving Windows configuration, driver updates, installing game launchers, and adjusting display settings; it characterizes console setup as plug-and-play. The amount of work varies with the PC, your experience, and how much customization you want. A preconfigured system and a buyer comfortable with computer settings may make the process less burdensome, while troubleshooting or tuning can add time for others.
Ongoing tinkering is also a possibility, not a universal requirement. The reviewed sources do not establish that every gaming PC is harder to maintain or that owners must upgrade frequently. Your tolerance for occasional configuration is more useful to consider than assuming every PC demands constant attention. See HP’s PC-versus-console comparison.

5. A console may suit your priorities better
A console may be a better fit if you value a lower entry cost, straightforward setup, living-room convenience, or access to a particular platform exclusive. A PC may make more sense if you value selected component upgrades or want one computer for gaming and other work, such as productivity or creative tasks. Neither platform is universally cheaper or better: the answer depends on what you will play and use.

- Set a total budget: Include the display and peripherals you do not already own, not just the tower.
- Check your games: Make sure your preferred titles are available on the platform you are considering, especially if an exclusive matters to you.
- Account for space: Decide whether a desktop setup fits your room and where you want to play.
- Choose your setup comfort level: Consider whether Windows configuration, drivers, launchers, and display settings sound manageable.
- Think beyond gaming: If you will also use the PC for work or creative tasks, include that value in your comparison.
- Compare current prices: Treat published estimates and company-specific price changes as dated snapshots, then check the actual offers available to you.
Electricity can also affect ownership costs, depending on the hardware, display, hours of use, and local rates. The reviewed sources do not establish a representative 2026 electricity-use figure or universal annual running cost, so estimate it from your own setup and usage if it matters to your budget.
