The right server setup depends on traffic, uptime expectations, team capacity, and how much infrastructure you want to operate. A single host is usually enough for a small, low-risk app. Put a reverse proxy in front when you need HTTPS termination or routing. Use multiple application servers behind a load balancer for horizontal scale and failure isolation. Choose containers when repeatable packaging and independent deployments matter; add Kubernetes only when you need its broader orchestration model. Managed platforms and serverless runtimes minimize host administration at the cost of some control and portability.
This guide explains what each architecture does, where it fits, what it requires, and which failure modes to plan for.

At a glance: the five patterns
| Setup | Typical shape | Operational effort | Scaling model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single server | Web server, application, and often database on one host | Lowest | Mostly vertical (larger host) | Prototypes, internal tools, small low-traffic sites |
| Reverse proxy plus application server | Public NGINX or equivalent forwards to a private app process | Low to medium | Usually one application host unless replicated | HTTPS, static files, routing, and process isolation |
| Load-balanced application servers | Load balancer distributes requests to two or more healthy instances | Medium | Horizontal (more backends) | Higher uptime, multi-zone operation, and variable traffic |
| Containers, with or without Kubernetes | Application and dependencies run from container images | Medium to high | Replica and service-level scaling | Reproducible environments and multi-service systems |
| Managed platform or serverless | Provider operates most of the runtime and host layer | Low infrastructure effort | Provider-managed or configured autoscaling | Teams prioritizing delivery over host administration |
These are architectural patterns, not mutually exclusive products. For example, a managed container service can still place a gateway in front of several replicas, and a Kubernetes cluster can expose services through a reverse proxy or gateway.
1. Single server: the simplest complete deployment
In a single-server setup, one physical machine or virtual machine runs the web server, application process, and frequently the database. It is a practical pattern rather than a formal industry standard, and it remains useful when the application is small enough that simplicity outweighs resilience.

How the request flows
A request reaches the host, the web server serves static content or hands the request to the application, and the application reads or writes local data. A common implementation uses a Linux virtual machine with a web server, a runtime such as Python, Node.js, Java, PHP, or .NET, and a database on the same machine.
Why teams start here
- There are few moving parts to configure, monitor, back up, and secure.
- Local communication between components is straightforward, with no internal load-balancing or service-discovery layer.
- Fixed host capacity makes resource usage and basic monthly budgeting easier to understand than usage-based architectures.
- Developers can deploy an early prototype or internal tool without first building a platform.
Limits and failure modes
- The host is a concentrated failure point: a hardware, operating-system, storage, or kernel problem can take every component offline.
- Scaling is primarily vertical, meaning a larger machine or more memory and CPU. There is a hard ceiling and a resize may require downtime.
- Application, database, and web-server workloads compete for the same CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network capacity. A query spike can slow unrelated requests.
- Operating-system patches, runtime upgrades, and reboots generally interrupt the whole application unless you build a separate replacement host.
- A local database backup is not the same as an independently stored, tested recovery copy.
When it is a sensible choice
Use one host when downtime has limited consequences, traffic is predictable, the team is small, and the application can tolerate a maintenance window. Establish backups, basic monitoring, firewall rules, and a repeatable rebuild procedure from the beginning. Those practices make a later move to a proxy, multiple hosts, or a managed service much less disruptive.

A reverse proxy is a public-facing server that accepts client connections and forwards selected requests to an application process. NGINX is a common choice, but the architectural role is not tied to one implementation. The application listener can remain on a private interface while the proxy handles the internet-facing connection.

What the proxy can do
- Terminate TLS: manage HTTPS certificates at the edge and send traffic to the application over an appropriate internal connection.
- Route requests: choose an upstream by hostname or URL path, such as sending
api.exampleto an API process and/assetsto static storage. - Serve static files: return images, stylesheets, and JavaScript without consuming application workers.
- Apply access controls: enforce request-size limits, allow or deny paths, and set forwarding headers consistently.
- Shield the process: keep the application port off the public network and provide a controlled boundary for timeouts and connection handling.
NGINX documentation describes reverse-proxy and load-balancing roles; its AWS architecture material characterizes F5 ADS as “a load balancer, API gateway, and reverse proxy.” The terms overlap in capability, but the deployment role here is a proxy in front of one application host.
A practical deployment sequence
- Run the application on a private address and verify that it responds locally on its internal port.
- Expose only the proxy’s HTTP and HTTPS ports at the firewall; restrict direct access to the application port.
- Configure the proxy’s upstream target, host and path rules, request size limits, timeouts, and forwarding headers.
- Install and renew the TLS certificate at the proxy, then redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS if the application requires secure transport.
- Serve cacheable static files from the proxy and forward dynamic routes to the application process.
- Monitor proxy errors, upstream latency, connection saturation, certificate expiry, and application logs as separate signals.
What this improves—and what it does not
The proxy gives better process isolation and traffic control than exposing the application directly. It does not, by itself, make the service highly available: if the proxy and application share one host, that host is still a single point of failure. Nor does a proxy automatically provide horizontal scaling; that requires multiple upstream instances and a distribution mechanism.
3. Multiple application servers behind a load balancer
In this design, a load balancer is the public entry point. It distributes requests to two or more application instances and stops sending traffic to an instance that fails health checks. AWS describes an Application Load Balancer distributing traffic across Availability Zones and performing health checks. Azure distinguishes Layer-7 proxy load balancing from Layer-4 transport balancing, while Google’s Application Load Balancer is a proxy-based Layer-7 service for HTTP and HTTPS backends.

Layer 7 versus Layer 4
| Property | Layer 7 (HTTP/HTTPS) | Layer 4 (TCP/UDP) |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Understands requests, hosts, paths, headers, and (depending on service) methods. | Sees transport connections and addresses, not the meaning of an HTTP request. |
| Routing | Can select a backend using host or path rules and request-aware policies. | Usually distributes connections or flows based on transport-level information. |
| Typical use | Web applications, APIs, and HTTP services. | Non-HTTP protocols, raw TCP services, or cases needing minimal protocol interpretation. |
| Trade-off | More control, with proxy processing and HTTP-specific configuration. | Lower request-level awareness, but broad protocol coverage and simpler handling. |
What must change in the application
- Stateless requests: keep session data in a shared store or use another design that works whichever instance receives the next request.
- Shared files: move uploads and generated assets to shared or object storage instead of an instance’s local disk.
- Health endpoints: expose a check that verifies the dependencies necessary to serve traffic, while avoiding an expensive full transaction on every probe.
- Graceful shutdown: let an instance finish in-flight requests before deployment or removal from service.
- Observability: include a request identifier and instance identity in logs so failures can be traced across the balancer and backend.
Availability is a system property
Adding a balancer is not enough to guarantee high availability. The backends need independent failure domains, health checks must detect real inability to serve, deployments must avoid taking every instance down at once, and databases, queues, caches, DNS, and storage must not remain single points of failure. Distribute instances across Availability Zones or equivalent domains when the platform supports it.
AWS’s Well-Architected guidance describes load balancers as the workload entry point that distributes traffic to compute instances or containers to improve utilization. That capability helps absorb demand and isolate a failed backend, but it does not remove the need to design state, data durability, and operations.
Costs and operational trade-offs
This architecture adds a managed or self-operated balancing component, extra network paths, health-check traffic, and at least one additional application instance. It can reduce the impact of a single host failure and make rolling deployments practical, but it also requires coordinated configuration, monitoring, capacity planning, and often higher network cost. No universal performance or price ranking applies; results depend on workload, region, instance size, and traffic pattern.

4. Containerized application, with or without Kubernetes
A container image packages application code, its runtime, and declared dependencies into a repeatable artifact. The same image can be tested in one environment and promoted to another, reducing differences caused by manually configured hosts.
Managed containers without running a cluster
Services such as ECS with Fargate or Azure Web App for Containers can run images while the provider manages much of the host layer. You still define image versions, environment variables, secrets, networking, resource limits, health checks, and rollout behavior, but you do not maintain every underlying operating-system host.
What Kubernetes adds
Kubernetes introduces a control plane and a larger vocabulary for operating many workloads: Deployments describe desired replicas and rollout state, Services provide stable access to a set of pods, namespaces separate administrative domains, and gateway or ingress mechanisms handle external traffic. Google’s service architecture blueprint states that a Kubernetes Service exposes a set of pods as one entity. NGINX Gateway Fabric implements Gateway API behavior for load balancing, reverse proxying, and API-gateway use cases.

When Kubernetes is justified
- You operate several services that need independent release and scaling policies.
- Multiple teams need consistent scheduling, policy, secrets, and networking primitives.
- A platform team can own cluster upgrades, security, observability, and incident response.
- Portability across environments or a standardized deployment model is materially valuable.
Kubernetes is not a default upgrade for a small application. Its control plane, networking, storage, upgrades, access policies, and debugging add substantial operational work. A managed container runtime often supplies the repeatability benefit with less platform ownership.
Container-specific failure points
- An image that works locally may fail in production because of missing secrets, incompatible architecture, file permissions, or resource limits.
- Replica counts do not create resilience if every replica runs on one failed node or shares one unavailable dependency.
- Rolling updates need readiness probes and rollback procedures; a process that is alive but not ready can receive traffic unless the probe is correct.
- Persistent data needs an explicit storage design. Containers are replaceable units, not automatic backups.
5. Managed platforms and serverless backends
Managed platforms supply the runtime and much of the underlying infrastructure. Serverless does not mean that servers do not exist; it means the provider handles host provisioning and exposes scaling and deployment controls at a higher level. AWS reference architectures use Fargate for serverless compute, Google documents Cloud Run as an Application Load Balancer backend, and Azure App Service provides managed web hosting and Web App for Containers.
What the team manages
- Application code, image or build configuration, environment variables, and secrets.
- Resource limits, concurrency, minimum and maximum instances, health behavior, and deployment revisions where the platform exposes those controls.
- Data stores, authentication, domains, observability, and recovery procedures.
Advantages
- Less operating-system patching, host replacement, and fleet capacity work.
- Built-in routing, deployment, and autoscaling features can shorten the path from commit to production.
- Short-lived or bursty workloads can use capacity without a permanently sized host fleet, subject to the platform’s billing model.
Trade-offs to evaluate
- Limits on execution time, memory, concurrency, networking, background work, or supported runtimes can shape the application.
- Usage-based charges change with requests, compute duration, data transfer, and retained resources; a fixed-host comparison is not meaningful without a workload model.
- Provider-specific configuration and managed services can increase migration effort later.
- Lower-level tuning and operating-system control are limited compared with a self-managed host.
Choose this approach when reducing infrastructure administration is worth the platform’s constraints and dependency. Confirm regional availability, quotas, networking behavior, cold-start characteristics, and current pricing for the exact service and workload before committing.
Quick Recap
How to choose a setup
Start with risk, not fashion
- Define the consequence of downtime. If a maintenance window is acceptable, one host may be sufficient. If a failed machine must not stop service, plan for independent backends and reliable data services.
- Estimate traffic shape. Predictable, modest traffic favors a simple deployment. Spikes, seasonal demand, or uncertain growth favor horizontal capacity or provider autoscaling.
- List edge requirements. HTTPS termination, static delivery, host/path routing, request limits, and access rules are reasons to add a reverse proxy or gateway.
- Check state and storage. Sessions, uploads, jobs, and databases determine whether instances can be replaced freely or need shared services.
- Match operations to the team. Do not select Kubernetes if no one can own upgrades, security, observability, and incident response. A managed runtime may meet the goal with fewer operational obligations.
- Test recovery. Restore backups, replace an instance, roll back a deployment, and verify that health checks remove a broken backend. A diagram is not evidence of resilience.
Decision guide
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest path for a small, low-risk app | Single server | Fewest components and the lowest operational burden. |
| HTTPS, static files, or private application ports | Reverse proxy | Centralizes edge handling without requiring multiple app hosts. |
| Uptime during an instance failure or horizontal growth | Load balancer plus multiple backends | Distributes requests and removes unhealthy instances. |
| Repeatable packaging and independent service releases | Managed containers or a container platform | Images standardize runtime dependencies; orchestration can be added as scope grows. |
| Minimal host administration | Managed platform or serverless | The provider operates more of the runtime, subject to service limits and coupling. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a reverse proxy with a load balancer: a proxy can front one application server; a load balancer distributes traffic among multiple targets.
- Assuming replicas equal high availability: replicas sharing one node, database, zone, or deployment failure domain can still fail together.
- Keeping state on replaceable instances: local sessions, uploads, and queues disappear or become inconsistent when traffic moves.
- Using shallow health checks: a process can return “alive” while its database, queue, or critical dependency is unusable.
- Choosing Kubernetes by default: orchestration scope should justify its platform operations.
- Ignoring observability: collect edge, backend, dependency, and deployment signals separately so a timeout can be localized.
- Comparing prices without conditions: region, traffic, storage, data transfer, instance size, and request patterns change the result; published architecture documentation does not establish a universal cheapest or fastest setup.
What to remember
- A single host optimizes simplicity but concentrates failure and resource contention.
- A reverse proxy adds TLS termination, routing, static delivery, and process isolation; it does not automatically add redundancy.
- A load balancer enables horizontal distribution and health-based removal, but state, data, deployments, and monitoring must also be designed for failure.
- Containers make environments repeatable. Kubernetes orchestrates many containers and services and therefore carries greater operational scope.
- Managed and serverless services reduce host administration while trading away some low-level control and increasing provider-specific dependency.
