If you want a new movie for the Oct. 17–18, 2026 weekend, five picks stand out across Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV and rental stores: Practical Magic 2, Love of Your Life, Tenzing, Sacrifice and the deliberately cheesy R.I.P.D. The first four are recent releases or weekend conversation starters; the fifth is a “hear-me-out” choice for viewers who want supernatural popcorn fun.
Availability can differ by country and by storefront. In particular, Practical Magic 2 is a paid rental or purchase rather than a subscription inclusion, while the other selections are presented through subscription services listed below.
Quick guide: which movie fits your weekend?
| Movie | Where to watch | Genre and mood | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practical Magic 2 | Paid video on demand through Amazon or Apple rental/purchase stores | Witchy fantasy, family nostalgia | Fans of the original and supernatural romance |
| Love of Your Life | Prime Video | Grief-focused romantic drama | A reflective, character-led evening |
| Tenzing | Apple TV | Historical survival adventure | Viewers who want real-world stakes and mountain spectacle |
| Sacrifice | Netflix | Dark satire, hostage thriller | Audiences seeking a sharper, stranger thriller |
| R.I.P.D. | Prime Video | Supernatural action-comedy | A knowingly campy, low-commitment movie night |
Tom’s Guide’s Oct. 17 roundup describes the selection as four new movies plus one unconventional recommendation. Us Magazine’s Oct. 16 streaming roundup independently places Tenzing and Love of Your Life among the weekend’s notable arrivals. Rights and catalog placement may change after publication, so check the title page in your local service before starting.
The five movies, explained
Practical Magic 2: a witchy return with a family curse
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as the Owens sisters in this follow-up set 28 years after the original Practical Magic. The story shifts attention to Sally’s daughter, Kylie, as the family faces the inherited curse that kills men who fall in love with Owens women. That setup makes the sequel a natural choice for viewers who want recognizable characters, romantic stakes and autumnal supernatural atmosphere rather than a completely new fictional world.

The film is offered as paid video on demand: you can rent or buy it through Amazon or Apple’s movie storefronts. Because this is a transaction rather than a subscription benefit, confirm the rental period, purchase format and device support shown for your region before paying.
Love of Your Life: a grief story that keeps moving
Rachel Morrison directs this romantic drama about Maya, a nurse whose husband dies. She travels and works abroad, meets new people and gradually confronts what it means to build a life after loss. The premise puts grief and recovery ahead of a conventional meet-cute, so it suits viewers looking for an emotional, adult-focused drama rather than a purely escapist romance.

Tenzing dramatizes Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary’s first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Genden Phuntsok plays Tenzing and Tom Hiddleston co-stars. The production was shot in Nepal and the Everest region, giving the expedition story a physical sense of place that should appeal to viewers who prefer survival, teamwork and historical context to fictional spectacle.

It is available on Netflix, where it is a straightforward subscription option for viewers who want a tense movie with an unusual premise rather than a gentle weekend watch.

R.I.P.D. is the older, intentionally pulpy option. Ryan Reynolds plays Boston police officer Nick, who is killed in the line of duty and recruited into the Rest In Peace Department, a supernatural agency that tracks spirits refusing to move on. Jeff Bridges co-stars as veteran agent Roy.

What is not part of this weekend’s guide
The live-action Moana is reported by the Associated Press as beginning on Disney+ on Wednesday, Oct. 21. That places it in the following week, not the Oct. 17–18 weekend window covered here. The distinction matters if you are planning a movie night specifically for this weekend rather than looking ahead.
