If you remember a melody but not the words, choose a humming-recognition tool. If the song is already playing from YouTube, TikTok, radio, or another device, use an audio-fingerprint service instead. That distinction matters: Shazam is excellent at recognizing recorded music, but its current documentation does not support humming or singing a tune.
The five options below cover both jobs. Google Search and SoundHound are the most practical choices for humming. AHA Music is more useful when you also want to upload a file or paste a video URL, while HumSearch is a simple browser-based alternative. Shazam is the best fit for identifying music that is currently playing and then finding similar recommendations.

No service guarantees the correct result every time. Google describes humming results as potential matches, and background noise, an inaccurate melody, a short recording, obscure music, and regional availability can all affect the result.

1. Google Search: best first choice for a tune stuck in your head
Google’s Song Search feature is the easiest place to start when you can reproduce the melody but cannot remember lyrics. It accepts a hum, whistle, or sung version of the tune and returns possible matches. Google’s product documentation recommends recording roughly 10 to 15 seconds.

How to search by humming on an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Google app.
- Tap the microphone in the search bar.
- Select Search a song.
- Hum, whistle, or sing the melody for about 10–15 seconds.
- Review the potential matches and open the most convincing result.
Google’s help documentation also lists Song Search through the Google Search widget. On supported devices, you can also try the voice command “What’s this song?” or “Hey Google, what’s this song?”.
After choosing a result, Google can provide links to listen to the track, read lyrics, and watch the music video. It is a strong general-purpose option because you do not need to know any lyrics or install a separate music-identification app.
Limitation: the result is not necessarily an exact identification. Compare several candidates, especially if the melody is common or your humming is out of key.
2. SoundHound: best dedicated app for humming and lyrics
SoundHound supports both ordinary music recognition and tune searches. Its large orange button handles both jobs: use it while a song is playing, or press it and sing or hum the melody yourself.

How to use SoundHound
- Open SoundHound.
- Tap the large orange button.
- For a remembered tune, sing or hum the melody into the microphone.
- For recorded music, let the app listen to the song playing nearby.
- Check the returned track, lyrics, and related information.
SoundHound can also search by typed lyrics or voice. Its history page keeps previous discoveries, and the app includes real-time lyrics, charts, a Music Map, and Spotify synchronization. Voice commands documented in its current Android listing include “Hey SoundHound… What’s that song?” and requests such as “Hey SoundHound… Show me lyrics to ‘Castle on the Hill’.”
You can ask SoundHound to add a discovery to a playlist, but the listing marks that voice feature as Spotify only. Automatic transfer of discoveries into a Spotify playlist requires a SoundHound account and a Spotify subscription.
When it may fail: user reviews report error messages such as “Sorry, there was an error,” muffled recordings, and failures with songs that should be recognizable. Hold the phone close to the source, reduce background noise, and try the melody again rather than assuming the song is unavailable.

3. Shazam: best for recorded music and similar-song recommendations
Shazam is the wrong first choice for a tune you can only hum. Apple’s current support instructions describe Shazam identifying recorded music from radio, speakers, stores, headphones, and audio playing on the device. They do not document humming, whistling, or singing as an input method.

It is, however, one of the best tools when the song is actually playing. Shazam can recognize audio from apps including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat on supported devices. After identifying a song, its current Android listing also advertises recommended songs and playlists similar to the discovered track.
Basic Shazam steps on Android
- Open Shazam.
- Tap the Shazam button.
- Wait while the app listens and matches the recording.
- Open the result to view the song and related recommendations.
Shazam can create a fingerprint while offline and attempt the match after the phone reconnects. If it cannot identify the recording, the pending Shazam may disappear. For hands-free use, touch and hold Shazam in the Android Auto app drawer and choose Auto Shazam. You can also touch and hold the Shazam button inside the app.
Useful Shazam shortcuts
- Notification bar: swipe down, tap Shazam in the notification bar, then tap Shazam again. Disable it under Library → Settings → Shazam from notification bar.
- Pop-Up Shazam: go to Library → Settings → Shazam from Pop-Up → Go To Settings → Shazam, then allow display over other apps.
- iPhone or iPad Control Center: open Control Center → Add Controls (+) → Add a Control → Recognize Music. Tap Recognize Music whenever audio is playing.
- Chrome: install the official Shazam: Find song names from your browser extension to identify music in a browser tab.
Shazam’s availability and some features vary by country. Microphone, notification, location, and Android screen-sharing permissions can also affect which features work.
4. AHA Music: best browser tool for humming, uploads, and video URLs
AHA Music is useful when the song is not conveniently playing near your phone. Its browser interface supports ambient recording, humming, file uploads, video URLs, and browser-tab recognition.

Ways to use AHA Music
- Nearby recording: open AHA Music and tap Record while the song plays.
- Hum mode: enable the site’s Hum to Search or Hum mode, then hum, whistle, or sing the melody.
- File upload: upload an audio or video file. Listed formats include MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, M4A, MP4, and WebM.
- Video URL: paste a YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or X URL. AHA Music says it can return clickable timestamps for identified music.
- Browser extension: install the Chrome or Edge extension to identify music playing in YouTube, Spotify Web, TikTok, or Instagram tabs.
Uploaded files can be up to 30 MB, so a long or high-quality video may need trimming before upload. AHA Music says its recorded-audio recognition uses ACRCloud acoustic fingerprinting and matches against a database of more than 100 million songs.
The service says recordings and uploads are processed securely and are not stored permanently. That is the company’s stated privacy policy, not an independent audit. AHA Music also says it does not offer a public API; developers looking for API access are directed to ACRCloud.

HumSearch is a web song-finder aimed specifically at humming recognition. It is presented as a browser service rather than a verified native iOS or Android application, so it is convenient on a desktop or any phone with a browser but less integrated than Google or SoundHound.

- Open HumSearch in your browser.
- Start its humming search feature.
- Hum or sing the main melody clearly for several seconds.
- Review the suggested tracks rather than accepting the first result automatically.
HumSearch is worth trying when Google Search or SoundHound cannot identify the tune. Its own comparison guide positions it as a casual-user and desktop/browser option. Treat broad accuracy percentages published in that guide cautiously: they are not supported by an independently reproducible benchmark, test set, or methodology.

How to improve a failed music search
- Hum the chorus or most distinctive phrase. A repeated hook is usually more useful than a quiet verse.
- Record for around 10–15 seconds. This is Google’s recommended duration for its humming search.
- Use one person’s voice at a time. Multiple voices make the melody harder to isolate.
- Move away from speakers and traffic. For humming, background noise can obscure the vocal melody; for recorded audio, it can prevent a clean fingerprint.
- Try singing the rhythm as well as the notes. A flat sequence of approximate pitches may produce weaker matches.
- Check more than the first result. Google explicitly provides potential matches, and a familiar melody may resemble several songs.
- Switch methods. Use Shazam when the actual recording is available, and Google or SoundHound when only the melody is available.

Yes. AHA Music supports audio and video uploads, including MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, M4A, MP4, and WebM. Its FAQ states that uploads can be up to 30 MB.
Why did a music recognition app return the wrong song?
Humming tools return possible matches rather than guaranteed answers. An inaccurate melody, common chord pattern, background noise, a short recording, or an obscure track can all produce an incorrect result. Try another section of the tune and compare multiple services.
