AirPods connection failures, charging trouble, one-sided or muffled audio, and unexpectedly short battery life each have different first checks. Start with reversible steps—charge status, Bluetooth, volume and audio settings—before resetting or arranging service. The steps can vary by AirPods model, case, paired device and software version. Apple’s support material does not establish which problem is most common or how often owners experience each one.
1. AirPods won’t connect or keep disconnecting
Work through Apple’s connection checks in order. A reset is a later step, not the starting point; confirm that both earbuds are charging before changing pairing settings.
- Update the paired device. Check that the iPhone, iPad or Mac you are using has current software.
- Check charge status. Put both AirPods in their case and confirm that each is charging.
- Check Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is on for the device you want to use.
- Check the audio route and volume. Select the AirPods as the audio output and raise the paired device’s volume if needed.
- Try pairing again. Apple’s connection guidance recommends pairing again if the AirPods will not connect. Follow the instructions for your particular model rather than assuming every case pairs the same way. Apple’s connection instructions distinguish pairing directions by generation.
- Restart or reset only if the checks fail. Use Apple’s current model-specific instructions. The case procedure varies across generations, and a full reset can remove custom settings.
2. AirPods or the case won’t charge
First determine whether the issue is with an earbud, the case or the power source. Apple’s charging guidance gives different minimum charging times for in-ear AirPods and AirPods Max, so use the instructions for the exact product rather than applying one wait time to every model.
- Check that the cable is firmly connected to the case and to a working power source; if applicable, check the adapter connection too.
- Allow the model-specific minimum charging time, then check the charging status again.
- If you use a wireless charging case, reposition it on the charger. If charging still fails, test with a compatible wired connection where the model supports it.
- Inspect the case’s charging port for debris. Avoid inserting sharp objects or using liquids as a general-purpose cleaning method.
Apple’s steps are on its AirPods charging support page. If ordinary checks do not help, a restart may be worth trying before a full reset. Reset directions depend on the generation; Apple notes that resetting can remove custom settings. See Apple’s reset guide for the current procedure.

3. One AirPod has no audio or the two sides sound uneven
If only one side plays, check that both earbuds have charge and that the paired device’s audio settings, including balance, are not directing sound unevenly. Then follow Apple’s current model-specific troubleshooting path for one AirPod that is not working. Apple lists this as a distinct issue in its AirPods Support hub; the steps may depend on the model and device.
4. AirPods sound muffled or too quiet
Sound quality can be affected by debris, and Apple identifies cleaning as a possible response to sound problems. Use the cleaning directions for your exact AirPods model, linked from the Apple AirPods Support hub. Do not assume a liquid, sharp tool or third-party cleaning kit is safe for every model.

5. Battery life seems short, or the problem persists
A single episode of short battery life does not by itself establish that the battery is worn out. Check the charge status and use Apple’s troubleshooting path for your model. If the issue continues after the relevant checks, Apple can diagnose the product and may arrange repair or replacement.
When to contact Apple about repair or replacement
Apple offers service in person at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, and by mail; availability depends on location and parts supply. Out-of-warranty fees shown by Apple are estimates until inspection, and tax or shipping may apply. Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. Check Apple’s AirPods service and repair page for the options available where you are.
