There is no universal best 4TB M.2 SSD. The right choice is the drive that your motherboard, laptop or console can physically accept, electrically support and cool. On the published specifications available for this guide, Samsung’s 990 PRO 4TB is a documented high-performance candidate: a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2 2280 drive rated for up to 7,450 MB/s sequential reads and 6,900 MB/s sequential writes. Those are Samsung’s maximum specifications, not independent benchmark results, and they do not prove that it is the best value or the fastest option in every computer.

Use the compatibility checklist below before comparing speed, endurance or price. For a PS5, apply Sony’s requirements separately; a drive can match the headline numbers and still fail to fit because of its heatsink or assembled thickness.

What to check before buying a 4TB M.2 SSD

M.2 describes the shape of a storage module, not a single performance standard. Two M.2 drives can use different interfaces, keys, lengths and capacities. A purchase is safe only when all of the following match the host device.

1. Form factor and length

The common desktop and laptop size is 2280: 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. A slot may accept only one length, or it may require a standoff to hold a shorter module. Check the markings on the motherboard, the laptop service manual or the console’s expansion-bay instructions. Do not assume that every M.2 slot accepts 2280, even though it is the most widespread size.

2. Keying and protocol

Notches in the connector identify the key. NVMe PCIe drives normally use an M-key, while some SATA M.2 modules use a different key arrangement. The slot and the drive must be compatible at the electrical level; an M.2 connector alone does not tell you whether it carries PCIe lanes, SATA, or both. The Samsung 990 PRO 4TB is an NVMe 2.0, PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, M.2 2280 drive, so it needs a host that provides an appropriate PCIe NVMe connection.

3. PCIe generation and lane count

A PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD can operate in a compatible lower-generation slot, but its peak throughput will be limited by that slot. A slot wired for fewer lanes can also reduce performance. Read the motherboard or laptop specification rather than relying on the presence of an M.2 label.

4. Capacity support

Some older firmware, laptops and operating systems have limits on very large modules. Confirm that the host lists support for a 4TB NVMe drive and that the firmware is current enough to recognize it. On a PS5, Sony specifies 250GB to 8TB for an expansion SSD, so 4TB falls inside the stated capacity range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Clearance for a single- or double-sided module

High-capacity drives may place NAND packages on both sides of the circuit board. A laptop’s removable cover or a motherboard’s thermal pad can press against a double-sided module. Measure the available height and check whether the manufacturer restricts the slot to single-sided drives.

Samsung 990 PRO 4TB: the documented high-performance candidate

Samsung identifies the 4TB model as part number MZ-V9P4T0BW. Its published specification is:

Attribute Published value What it means
Capacity 4TB Usable capacity shown by an operating system will be lower after decimal-to-binary conversion and formatting.
Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 Requires an NVMe-capable PCIe slot; a slower host can cap throughput.
Protocol NVMe 2.0 Uses the NVMe command set rather than SATA.
Form factor M.2 2280 22 mm by 80 mm module; confirm that the host accepts this length.
Sequential read Up to 7,450 MB/s Samsung’s maximum sequential-read rating under its test conditions.
Sequential write Up to 6,900 MB/s Samsung’s maximum sequential-write rating under its test conditions.
Endurance or warranty limit 2,400 TBW or five years The published warranty boundary for the 4TB model, subject to regional terms.

The speed figures are useful for identifying the drive’s class, but they are not a promise that every PC will reach them. CPU and chipset lane allocation, firmware, queue depth, thermals, workload size and free space all affect observed performance. No consistent independent test set or current regional price comparison establishes this model as a universal winner or the best value.

Bare drive versus heatsink version

Samsung sells the 990 PRO both as a bare module and with an integrated heatsink. Treat those as different physical products when checking fit. A heatsink can improve sustained thermal behavior, but it also adds height and may collide with a motherboard cover, laptop panel or console bay. If the host already includes a thermal spreader, the bare version is usually the easier part to install; follow the host manufacturer’s instructions instead of stacking cooling hardware.

How to compare 4TB M.2 SSDs without misleading specifications

Build a short list only after recording the host requirements. Then compare each candidate using the same fields and the same type of evidence.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Compatibility Is it NVMe or SATA? Which key? Is it 2280? Does the host provide the required PCIe generation and lanes? Is 4TB supported? An incompatible drive may not be detected or may not physically install.
Physical clearance Is the module single- or double-sided? Is a heatsink included? What are the assembled width and thickness? Clearance problems are common in laptops, compact PCs and consoles.
Performance evidence Are numbers vendor-rated sequential maxima, independent tests, or sustained-workload results? Were the methods comparable? Sequential ratings do not predict every application, game or long write.
Endurance and warranty What TBW is listed for the exact capacity? How long is the warranty, and which country’s terms apply? TBW is a warranty limit, not a guaranteed service life.
Value What is the current local price for the same 4TB capacity and the same heatsink configuration? Comparing a bare drive with a cooled version or an old sale price distorts value.

For models where a specification or price is not documented, record “not stated” rather than filling the gap with a guess. A larger advertised sequential number is not automatically better if the drive throttles in the target enclosure or cannot fit its thermal solution.

“SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the specifications above will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products.” — Sony Interactive Entertainment support documentation

Sony also notes that game performance can differ from the internal SSD even when an expansion drive meets the listed specifications. Keep the console’s software current, install the module with the required thermal structure, and treat the manufacturer’s dimensions as a hard limit rather than a suggestion.

PS5 installation sequence

  1. Back up important saved data and shut the console down completely; do not install a drive while it is in Rest Mode.
  2. Remove the outer cover and expansion-slot shield according to the instructions for your PS5 model.
  3. Set the spacer and screw for the 2280 position, then insert the M-key module at the connector angle and press it flat.
  4. Secure the drive without overtightening. Install the shield and cover only if the assembly remains within Sony’s width and thickness limits.
  5. Start the console. When prompted, format the drive; formatting erases its contents.
  6. Move or install games through the storage settings and observe whether the console reports an error or abnormal heat behavior.

What the speed numbers do—and do not—tell you

Sequential read and write figures describe large, orderly transfers. They are relevant to copying large files, some media workflows and portions of game loading, but they do not represent every workload. Small random accesses, queue depth, thermal state and background activity can matter more for an operating-system disk.

“Up to” is important. Samsung’s 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write figures are laboratory-style vendor maxima. A desktop with a Gen3 slot cannot reach a Gen4 ceiling, and a laptop may reduce speed to control heat. If you compare another drive, use measurements made with similar test software, queue settings, capacity and cooling. Mixing a manufacturer rating with an independent sustained-write result creates a false ranking.

Endurance, TBW and warranty terms

The 4TB 990 PRO is listed at 2,400 terabytes written (TBW) or five years. “Or” means the published warranty boundary is reached when either the time period expires or the stated write limit is reached, subject to the applicable regional terms. TBW is not a prediction that the drive will fail at that number, nor is it a promise that it will last for a particular number of years. Check the warranty page for the country and seller from which you buy.

Estimate your workload before paying for an endurance rating. A gaming library that is mostly read has a different write pattern from a workstation that records and deletes hundreds of gigabytes every day. Keep the purchase receipt and model number; warranty service generally depends on identifying the exact product and purchase channel.

Cooling and physical installation on a PC or laptop

Desktop motherboard

  1. Read the motherboard manual to identify which M.2 socket supports PCIe NVMe and which CPU or chipset lanes it uses.
  2. Update firmware if the manufacturer lists storage-compatibility fixes, then shut down and disconnect power.
  3. Remove the M.2 cover and any protective film from its thermal pad. Leaving film in place prevents heat transfer.
  4. Insert the drive at a slight angle, lower it onto the standoff and secure it with the supplied screw or latch.
  5. Reinstall the cover without forcing it against the module. If the SSD includes a heatsink, do not add a second cover unless the manual explicitly permits it.
  6. Enter firmware setup to confirm detection, then initialize and format the drive in the operating system.

Laptop

Confirm the service manual’s supported length, side clearance and capacity before opening the chassis. Disconnect the battery when the manual instructs you to do so, avoid touching contacts, and retain the original screw and shield. A laptop that accepts only a single-sided module may not close over a double-sided 4TB drive. If the slot is Gen3, a Gen4 model can still be usable, but its top speed will be constrained.

Capacity, formatting and free space

A drive sold as 4TB is marketed in decimal units, while many operating systems display capacity using binary units. The displayed number will therefore be lower than 4TB before formatting. The file system and system-reserved space reduce the available figure further. This is normal and is not evidence of missing flash memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave some free space for the operating system, temporary files and the drive’s background management. The exact amount depends on the host and workload; do not treat a manufacturer’s advertised capacity as the space available for games or projects.

Common problems and fixes

The drive is not detected in firmware

  • Power down and reseat the module; an angled insertion that is not fully engaged can look like a dead drive.
  • Verify that the socket supports NVMe PCIe rather than SATA-only M.2 modules.
  • Check lane-sharing notes. Installing another expansion card or using a particular SATA port can disable an M.2 socket on some motherboards.
  • Update firmware only with the manufacturer’s documented procedure and stable power.

The drive appears smaller than 4TB

Check decimal versus binary capacity and whether the operating system has created a recovery or reserved partition. In the disk-management utility, inspect the unallocated space before creating a new volume.

Performance falls during a long transfer

Thermal throttling, a nearly full drive, cache exhaustion or a slower destination can reduce sustained speed. Confirm that the heatsink has good contact, improve airflow and repeat tests with a consistent workload. Do not compare a short burst result with a long-transfer result.

The PS5 rejects the SSD

Recheck the exact interface, M key, 2280 size, capacity, assembled width and thickness, and heat-dissipation solution. A drive that satisfies the written numbers can still be incompatible; Sony explicitly places responsibility for third-party selection and performance on the buyer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make a buying decision

  1. Write down the host limits. Record slot type, PCIe generation, lane count, supported length, maximum capacity, side clearance and heatsink height.
  2. Eliminate physical mismatches. Remove every candidate that cannot fit the slot or its thermal cover, regardless of advertised speed.
  3. Separate evidence types. Label each performance number as a vendor maximum, an independent benchmark or a sustained-workload result.
  4. Check endurance and warranty for the exact capacity. Do not transfer a TBW figure from a smaller model or a different regional warranty.
  5. Compare like-for-like prices. Use current local prices for 4TB bare and heatsink versions separately; no reliable current price winner is established here.
  6. Choose the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB when its fit and cooling are confirmed. Its published Gen4x4 interface and 7,450/6,900 MB/s ratings make it a strong specification-led option, but not a universal or independently proven best buy.

Questions readers often ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB suitable for a PCIe Gen3 computer?

It may function in a compatible NVMe slot, but the Gen3 connection limits throughput below Samsung’s Gen4-rated maximums. Confirm the motherboard or laptop’s slot support and firmware first.

Should I buy the heatsink version for a PS5?

Choose the version whose complete width and thickness stay within Sony’s limits for your console. A heatsink is required for effective heat dissipation, but an oversized assembly can prevent the cover from closing.

Does 2,400 TBW mean the SSD will fail after 2,400TB of writes?

No. It is the published warranty boundary for the 4TB model, alongside five years, and is subject to regional terms. It is not a guaranteed failure point or a promised lifespan.

Why can two 4TB NVMe drives with similar sequential ratings feel different?

Random access behavior, firmware, thermal throttling, cache design, host lanes and the workload can differ. Sequential vendor maxima alone cannot predict every application or game.
