For colorful cartoons and animated movies, start with a 4K OLED TV if you want strong contrast and vivid HDR color—but don’t treat OLED or a broad color gamut as proof that a particular model is best. The right choice depends on how accurately it reproduces color, how bright your room is, and whether everyone watches from directly in front of the screen. The available evidence supports these buying criteria, not a verified ranking of specific TVs.
What matters most for animated movies
Animation can contain large areas of saturated color, bright highlights, and deep shadows, making color reproduction and contrast especially noticeable. For HDR viewing, look beyond a TV’s claimed color gamut: HDR color volume describes how well it reproduces colors at different brightness levels. A set may cover a wide range of colors yet struggle to show those colors accurately or at high brightness.
RTINGS explains its HDR color-volume testing using DCI-P3 and BT.2020 reference ranges. Its methodology describes reference coverage at 1,000 cd/m² for DCI-P3 and 10,000 cd/m² for BT.2020, and calls measured color luminance above 650 cd/m² a “good value.” These are test references and an evaluation benchmark—not universal minimums for buying a TV or descriptions of typical movie content. Colorful does not always mean accurate
Color gamut and color volume describe the range of colors a TV can reproduce; color accuracy concerns whether it reproduces the intended colors, white balance, gamma, and color temperature. An exaggerated picture mode may make cartoons look more vivid, but it can also distort the creator’s choices. If faithful color matters, compare candidates in their most accurate out-of-box picture mode rather than judging only by a saturated demo image. Check whether you mostly watch SDR or HDR
Not every animated film or show uses HDR or a wide color gamut. RTINGS says most SDR movies and shows use Rec.709, while some use DCI-P3 or BT.2020. That makes it important to check a TV’s performance in the formats you actually watch: HDR color-volume results do not by themselves describe SDR performance. Match the TV to your room and seating
Dark-room viewing
In a dark room, contrast and the handling of bright highlights against dark scenes can matter as much as saturated color. OLED is a plausible category to consider for movie viewing, but the available movie guidance does not establish a particular OLED model as the best TV for animation. Compare current model-level measurements before choosing.

Bright rooms and daytime viewing
In a bright room, consider both HDR brightness and reflection handling. A TV that performs well in a dark-room comparison may be less suitable where windows or lamps reflect on the screen. Group viewing from different seats
If people watch from seats spread across the room, check viewing-angle performance. Color and image quality can change when viewers sit off to the side, so a strong straight-on result may not suit a wide seating arrangement. RTINGS explains these changes in its TV viewing-angle guide.

How to choose among current models
- Set your constraints: decide on screen size, budget, room brightness, seating layout, and whether most viewing is SDR or HDR.
- Compare HDR color volume for HDR-heavy viewing: look for model-level measurements, not just a general claim about wide color.
- Check color accuracy: give particular weight to the accurate picture mode if you do not plan to calibrate the TV.
- Check contrast, brightness, and reflections: prioritize the factors that fit your room rather than relying on a single overall movie ranking.
- Verify the exact model and size: check current measurements, features, price, and availability before buying. Those details change, and no specific model or live listing is established here.
Without verified model-level comparisons, it would be misleading to name a best overall TV, a best budget pick, or a room-specific winner. Use “4K OLED TV” as a category to investigate, not as a guarantee that every OLED will outperform every alternative for your needs.

Start with Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it: RTINGS describes the mode as a way to reduce extra image and motion processing. Then compare the result with other picture modes according to your preferences and the TV’s settings. The mode name alone does not guarantee identical results across models.
