Yes. A 4K Roku player can work with a non-4K TV as long as the TV has an HDMI input. The television will display its own supported resolution—not 4K—so the Roku cannot turn an HD screen into a 4K display.
Can I use a 4K Roku on a non-4K TV?
Yes, provided the television has an HDMI connection. Roku says its streaming players work with TVs that have HDMI, and its Streaming Stick 4K setup guidance says the stick works with any TV that has HDMI. Roku’s compatibility FAQ and Streaming Stick 4K setup instructions explain the requirements.
Compatibility does not mean the TV can show 4K. A 720p or 1080p television remains limited to the resolution its screen supports. The Roku can stream and display content at a resolution the TV accepts, but it does not upgrade the television’s panel or guarantee a visible picture improvement over another Roku model.
What you need for basic setup
- A working HDMI input on the TV.
- The Roku connected to that input, with the TV set to the matching HDMI source.
- Adequate power for the Roku. Use the supplied power cable; if a TV USB port does not provide enough power, use the included wall adapter.
A Streaming Stick plugs directly into the TV’s HDMI port and does not require a separate HDMI cable. For other Roku players that connect by cable, Roku recommends a High Speed HDMI Cable for a 720p or 1080p television. Check the player’s box and instructions for the cable supplied or required. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K setup page covers its stick connection and power guidance.

How to connect the Roku
- Plug the Roku into an available HDMI input. For a Streaming Stick 4K, insert the stick directly into the HDMI port.
- Connect the Roku to power using its supplied cable. If the TV’s USB port does not power it reliably, connect the included wall adapter to an outlet.
- Turn on the TV and choose the HDMI input where the Roku is connected.
- Follow the on-screen setup. Roku players can detect the TV’s best display type, or you can choose one manually. For a non-4K screen, select a resolution the TV supports.
Roku’s general guidance recommends automatic detection of the TV’s best resolution and frame rate. If you change the display type and the screen goes blank, the player reverts to its previous setting after 20 seconds. Roku’s display-type instructions describe detection and manual selection.
Why a 4K picture may not appear
For 4K playback, Roku lists several requirements beyond owning a 4K-capable player: a compatible 4K TV with an HDMI 2.0 input that supports HDCP 2.2, sufficient internet bandwidth, and a streaming service plan that supports 4K. Roku says up to 25 Mbps may be needed for 4K streaming; this is Roku’s estimate, and its support page does not state a publication date. Roku’s 4K setup requirements provide the full list.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
A non-4K TV does not meet the display requirement, so even when the Roku, internet connection, and service support 4K, the TV cannot show that resolution. A stream can also fall back to a lower resolution if a device in the signal chain lacks the required support.
If a receiver or another device sits between the Roku and TV and 4K or HDR is not working, Roku says every HDMI-connected device in the chain must meet the relevant HDCP 2.2 requirement. As a diagnostic, connect the Roku directly to the TV and test again. This matters when troubleshooting a 4K setup; it does not change the non-4K screen’s resolution limit.

If the TV shows a blank screen
- Check that the Roku is firmly connected to HDMI and that the TV is set to the corresponding input.
- Check the Roku’s power connection. If it is powered from the TV’s USB port, try the supplied wall adapter.
- If you changed the display setting, wait up to 20 seconds for the Roku to return to its previous setting, then use automatic detection or select a resolution the TV supports.
- If a receiver or other HDMI device is in the path, connect the Roku directly to the TV to isolate the connection.
For a separate-cable Roku player, Roku recommends a High Speed HDMI Cable for 720p/1080p TVs; its Premium High Speed HDMI Cable recommendation applies to TVs that support 4K and/or HDR. A Streaming Stick connects directly, so a separate HDMI cable is not needed. Roku’s HDMI compatibility FAQ covers its cable recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you choose a 4K Roku for an HD TV?
If you already own one, you can use it with an HDMI-equipped HD television. If you are choosing a player, the TV’s maximum resolution is only one consideration: future use with a 4K TV, the specific Roku model’s features, and what cables and remote features are included may also matter. Roku’s compatibility guidance does not establish that a 4K model is better value or that it will improve picture quality on every HD television, so compare current model details against your needs rather than buying on the 4K label alone.
