4DEAD is a single-player roguelite action game in which No. 42, a creature created as humanity’s last hope during an alien invasion, dies unless it eats an enemy within four seconds. A free Steam demo launched on October 16, 2026, and reaches the mid-boss of stage two. The full game is planned for January 2027, although Steam still lists it as unreleased.
What the 4DEAD demo is
Developed by Kishiro and published by Kodansha, 4DEAD turns feeding into its entire survival system. Steam describes it as a fast action roguelite rather than a conventional shooter or brawler: enemies are both threats and the resource that keeps No. 42 alive.
The demo is free on Steam and was released shortly before Steam Next Fest, scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026. According to GameWith’s 2026 release information, its playable route continues through the mid-boss of stage two.
How the four-second timer works
The rule is deliberately absolute: No. 42 must consume an enemy before four seconds pass. Every successful meal extends the survival timer, so the safest-looking strategy—backing away from enemies—can become fatal. Progress requires moving toward groups, identifying a viable target and reaching it before the countdown expires.

Taking damage does not immediately end a run. The critical failure is running out of time without finding food, which makes positioning and route choice as important as avoiding attacks.
Ordinary feeding versus timer management
- Ordinary feeding: Consume an available enemy before the countdown reaches zero to keep the run going.
- Movement pressure: Because food is usually in the enemy formation, retreating can leave No. 42 with no reachable target.
- Combat readability: The timer adds urgency to reading enemy groups, attack patterns and openings; a fight that would normally reward patience may punish it here.
Just Eats and the Over Eats power state
Just Eats timing
Eating with one second or less remaining activates Just Eats. This high-risk timing sharply fills the Over Eats gauge. A routine meal preserves the run, while a deliberately delayed meal can accelerate access to the game’s strongest state—but leaves less room for a mistake.

Over Eats
When the gauge is full, No. 42 enters Over Eats, an invincible mode that allows rapid consumption of enemies. Steam presents it as the game’s ultimate “OVER EATS” mode. The system creates a clear trade-off: players can safely eat early, or attempt Just Eats windows to reach invincibility sooner.
Skills and roguelite builds
Clearing stages awards skills that can be combined into a personal build. Published examples include eating several enemies at once, increasing dash speed and creating an attacking duplicate when No. 42 takes damage.

The demo’s build choices therefore sit between survival and tempo. A mobility skill can help reach food consistently; an area-eating skill may create larger timer extensions; and a damage-triggered attack can change how aggressively you approach enemy packs. The available descriptions establish that skills combine between stages, but do not specify a complete skill count or fixed probability for each option.
How far the demo goes
The documented endpoint is the mid-boss of stage two. That gives the demo a defined early-game slice rather than a short tutorial-only sample. It should be treated as an introduction to the timer, Just Eats, Over Eats and stage-to-stage build decisions, not as the full campaign.

Release status, platform and requirements
Steam currently marks 4DEAD as unreleased and lists January 2027 as the planned full-game release window. Dates can change before launch, so the store listing is the current place to check availability and wishlist the game.

Who should try the demo
- Good fit: Players who enjoy short decision windows, aggressive movement and experimenting with roguelite upgrades.
- Potential friction: Players who prefer to keep distance, pause between encounters or win through slow attrition may find the forced feeding loop demanding.
- What the demo can answer: Whether the four-second countdown feels motivating or overwhelming, whether enemy formations remain readable under pressure, and which combinations of movement, feeding and damage-response skills suit your play style.
To try it, open the 4DEAD listing on Steam, install the free demo on a Windows 10 PC that meets the stated minimums, and use the early stages to learn how much time each meal buys. The planned January 2027 release remains subject to change.
