Among people in GameDiscoverCo’s 2026 Steam Fan Snapshot who said they play PC games for at least one hour a month, 42.4% reported playing on PC only. The figure does not mean 42.4% of every Steam account: it describes the survey’s screened PC-playing respondents.

What the 42.4% figure actually measures

GameDiscoverCo surveyed more than 16,000 Steam players worldwide in 2026. Participants were recruited online, offered giveaways and, with permission, had their answers connected to their Steam game libraries. Of all respondents, 91.5% said they played PC games for at least one hour per month. That group is the denominator for the PC-only result.

Within those monthly PC players, 42.4% said they played games only on PC. In other words, the result describes platform behavior among an already engaged Steam audience, not the share of all Steam accounts that never use another device.

How PC-only and multi-platform play break down

Platform pattern among respondents Share of all survey respondents What it means
PC only 42.4% Played PC games but reported no mobile or console play
PC and mobile, no console 22% Used PC and mobile games, but no console
PC and console, no mobile 11.5% Used PC and a console, but no mobile games
PC, console and mobile 15.6% Used all three platform categories
Any monthly PC play 91.5% Screened into the PC-player denominator

The four behavior categories total 91.5%, matching the share that passed the one-hour monthly PC-play screen. Adding the two PC-without-console groups—PC only and PC plus mobile without console—produces 64.4%. Thus, nearly two-thirds of the surveyed PC players reported no console play, while 35.6% reported some console use.

Do most Steam gamers also play on console?

Not in this survey’s screened PC-player sample. Console overlap was substantial, but it was not the majority: 64.4% of PC players reported no console play. The remaining respondents included people who used PC and console only (11.5%) and people who used PC, console and mobile (15.6%).

Looking at individual console pairings, Switch was the leading single-console overlap with PC at 7.5%, followed by PlayStation at 6.4% and Xbox at 3.2%. These are comparison groups reported by the survey and should not be added together as a complete market-share estimate; respondents can belong to more than one hardware category or to broader multi-platform groups.

How common is Steam Deck use?

Steam Deck use reached 17% among the surveyed PC players. That makes Valve’s handheld gaming PC a notable part of this engaged Steam audience, especially for readers interested in portable PC gaming. The result is a use figure within this survey, not a measure of Steam Deck ownership across every Steam account.

GameDiscoverCo also reported a separate ownership-or-use comparison: 16.4% for Switch, 13.4% for Steam Deck and 5.5% for people using both. Because that comparison uses a different framing from the 17% PC-player figure, the numbers should not be treated as conflicting estimates or combined into one rate.

Why the result matters for the PC games market

PC remains a distinct audience

A 42.4% PC-only share indicates that a large segment of active Steam players does not report mobile or console play. For developers and publishers, that supports treating PC as its own audience rather than assuming every Steam customer is automatically a cross-platform player.

Cross-platform reach is still important

More than half of the screened PC players—57.6%—reported at least one additional platform. Mobile was especially common: 22% used PC and mobile without a console, and another 15.6% used all three categories. A PC launch strategy can therefore address a dedicated PC audience while still encountering players whose habits span phones, consoles or both.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Handheld PC play deserves separate attention

The Steam Deck result shows why “PC” is not synonymous with a desktop tower or laptop in an engaged Steam sample. Portable PC gaming can overlap with console ownership and may influence how players discover, buy and play Steam titles.

How reliable is the 42.4% estimate?

The survey is useful for describing the respondents, but it is not a population-weighted census of all Steam users. Recruitment through online giveaways favors people who are comfortable responding online and especially engaged with games. GameDiscoverCo author Simon Carless described the audience as “a more turned-on, online-savvy subset” and noted that it was more international than many comparable surveys.

That qualification affects how the percentage should be quoted. “42.4% of surveyed monthly PC-playing Steam respondents” is supported. “42.4% of all Steam users are PC-only” is broader than the evidence allows. The survey also does not establish how the result would change after weighting for country, age, account activity or other characteristics of the full Steam population.

How to interpret the headline in one sentence

Among more than 16,000 worldwide Steam players surveyed in 2026, 42.4% of those who played PC games for at least an hour monthly said they used no other gaming platform; most of the rest played on mobile, console or both, and 17% reported Steam Deck use.
