An ESP32 can give an old gadget network control, synchronized time, or wireless connectivity—but it is not a universal drop-in replacement. The best candidates have a useful display, buttons, sensor, motor, or a control interface you can identify. Here are four practical directions, with the compatibility checks and safety limits that matter before you start.

Which old gadgets are good ESP32 projects?

Start by identifying what you want to keep and how the gadget communicates. An external infrared receiver is usually easier to work with than an undocumented display connection; a low-voltage clock is generally a safer candidate than an internally modified mains-powered plug. Your ESP32 board also matters: SoC variant, flash size, PSRAM, and exposed interfaces vary. Check the specific board against the project requirements before selecting firmware or wiring. Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 documentation describes these hardware differences.

Project What you may keep Key compatibility question Relative effort and risk
IR control bridge The original TV, stereo, or climate device Does it accept infrared commands, and can an emitter reach its receiver? Often an approachable starting point; low-voltage setup is possible.
Clock or clock-radio reuse Enclosure, display, buttons, or speaker, if their interfaces can be identified Can the display or other retained parts be driven safely by the chosen board? Varies considerably with the display and circuit.
Wired controller to Bluetooth The controller and its buttons Can the particular ESP32 board act as a USB host and support the required Bluetooth behavior? Advanced and project-specific; verify the original build details.
Compatible smart-home device reflash Potentially the device’s existing ESP-family hardware What chip and board are inside, and can you access the flashing pins safely? Can require soldering and carries serious risk if the device is mains-powered.

This is a practical comparison of interfaces and safety constraints, not a measured difficulty ranking.

Can I make my old TV smart with an ESP32?

You can often add network-triggered control to an infrared-remote TV, stereo, or climate device. An ESP32-based bridge can send selected IR commands, allowing a home-automation system to trigger functions the original device already understands. It does not turn the TV’s operating system or apps into a smart platform.

Check the remote and receiver

  • Confirm that the original remote uses infrared rather than radio frequency or another control method.
  • Plan to place an IR emitter where it can reach the device’s receiver; a concealed device may need an emitter positioned near its sensor.
  • Identify the commands you need and confirm the chosen firmware or project supports the device’s protocol. An IR bridge does not guarantee compatibility with every remote or product.

ESPHome’s project pages include an infrared and radio-frequency proxy category. Treat that as evidence of a project direction, not a promise that every device will work.

Can I reuse an old clock display?

Potentially. An ESP32 can provide network-synchronized time and other connected features while you reuse a clock’s enclosure, buttons, display, or speaker. The hard part is usually not getting time from a network; it is understanding how the particular old display and controls are connected and driven.

  • Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision

Inspect before choosing a display

  • Find the clock’s exact model and, if available, its circuit diagrams or service documentation.
  • Determine the display type and how it is controlled. Do not assume that a vintage display can connect directly to an ESP32.
  • Decide which original parts are worth retaining. Reusing the enclosure and buttons may be simpler than adapting an undocumented display or radio circuit.
  • Choose a low-voltage clock that can be disconnected and safely opened if you are not experienced with electrical work.

ESPHome’s curated DIY list includes an IoT clock project, but that example does not establish that a particular vintage display or clock-radio circuit is compatible. Check the project listings for inspiration, then verify the hardware details for your own device.

Can an ESP32 turn a wired controller into Bluetooth?

It can be possible, but this is an advanced conversion rather than a general-purpose adapter recipe. A reported build uses an ESP32-S3 in a USB-host design to present a wired controller as a Bluetooth device. That does not mean any ESP32 board can host any controller or that the same wiring and firmware will work across devices.

Verify the complete build before buying or wiring parts

  • Check the exact controller model and the original project’s documentation.
  • Confirm that the specific ESP32-S3 board supports the required USB-host connection and has the needed connector and pin access.
  • Verify the firmware’s Bluetooth behavior and compatibility with the device you intend to pair.
  • Follow the documented wiring and power design rather than inferring pin connections from another ESP32 board.

Espressif’s documentation emphasizes that ESP32 boards differ in SoC variant and hardware characteristics. The USB-controller example is project-specific; use the underlying build documentation to establish its exact controller, board, firmware, and wiring before attempting it.

Can I flash new firmware onto this old smart plug?

Sometimes, if the plug contains a compatible ESP-family chip and you can identify its board and safely access the programming interface. Firmware such as Tasmota supports ESP8266, ESP8285, and ESP32-family devices, but a product’s age or brand alone does not establish compatibility. The exact chip, board layout, firmware image, pin access, and power design all matter.

Check compatibility and plan recovery

  1. Identify the exact device and chip. Do not select a firmware image based only on the product name.
  2. Check the relevant Tasmota device and flashing documentation for board compatibility, pinout, and the required image.
  3. Determine whether the programming pins are accessible. Tasmota notes that some devices require soldering to board pads or chip pins to attach a serial adapter.
  4. Where the device and tools allow it, make a backup of the original firmware before flashing. Decide how you will restore or recover the device if the new firmware fails.
  5. Use the documented flashing setup and a power source appropriate for the board. Tasmota’s ESP32 guide recommends a separate supply capable of at least 500 mA for its documented flashing setup; this is not a universal current rating for every ESP32 project.

Tasmota’s setup documentation describes serial programming and the possibility of soldering to board pads or chip pins. Its flashing guide also includes firmware-backup steps: Getting Started.

Do not treat an open smart plug as a low-voltage project

Mains-powered devices can expose you to dangerous voltages even when the task appears to be a simple firmware change. Tasmota’s documentation states: “DO NOT CONNECT DEVICES TO MAINS AC POWER WHILE THE COVER IS OPEN AND CIRCUIT BOARD IS EXPOSED!!!” It also warns: “NEVER TRY TO FLASH WHILE YOUR DEVICE IS CONNECTED TO MAINS POWER!!!” Follow the full device-specific safety instructions. If you lack the relevant electrical skills, choose a low-voltage gadget that can be disconnected and safely opened instead.

How to choose a project and avoid a dead end

  • Prefer a known interface. A visible IR receiver, accessible buttons, or documented serial connection gives you a clearer starting point than an unidentified display circuit.
  • Match the board to the job. Confirm the chip variant and available peripherals before settling on firmware, especially for USB-host or Bluetooth projects.
  • Keep the project’s scope realistic. A bridge can add control to an existing device; it does not automatically recreate missing features or make proprietary hardware compatible.
  • Separate low-voltage experiments from mains work. A clock or external IR bridge is a better first project if you cannot safely handle exposed mains-powered circuitry.
  • Have a recovery plan. Save original firmware where possible and know how the device can be restored before you overwrite it.

ESPHome’s DIY project list also includes examples such as a Bluetooth thermometer and garage-door controllers. These examples can help you explore what is possible, but ESPHome notes that curated third-party projects are not officially maintained by its team. Check each project’s own documentation and hardware requirements.
