You can lease or rent smartphones, computers, tablets, and smartwatches, with TVs and game consoles also available through some providers. These are familiar categories found in leasing offers—not a verified ranking of the products people lease most. Before choosing, check whether the offer is a lease, rent-to-own agreement, rental, or subscription, then compare the full cost and what happens at the end of the term.

What tech products can you lease?

Availability depends on the provider and country. The examples below illustrate different kinds of offers, not interchangeable contracts: Apple Upgrade is a U.S. lease offer; Best Buy Canada has a separate laptop subscription; and the Grover examples are from its Germany site.

Product category Examples of offers What to check
Smartphones Apple Upgrade in the United States Carrier enrollment requirement, lease term, return condition, and early-exit cost
Laptops and computers Apple Upgrade; computers and laptops through Rent-A-Center and Progressive Leasing at Best Buy; eligible laptops through Best Buy Canada’s Monthly Subscription Whether the contract is a lease, lease-to-own agreement, or subscription; buyout and return options
Tablets Apple Upgrade; tablets listed by Rent-A-Center and Progressive Leasing Eligible model, contract structure, and end-of-term obligation
Smartwatches Apple Upgrade in the United States Eligible watch configuration, return condition, and early-departure terms
TVs and game consoles Rent-A-Center, Progressive Leasing at Best Buy, and Grover Germany list options in these categories Local availability and whether the offer is a lease or rental

Ownership statistics should not be mistaken for leasing rankings. Asurion’s 2024 study surveyed 1,004 respondents and reported ownership of smart TVs by 77%, streaming devices by 64%, and gaming consoles by 48%; it also reported desktop or laptop computer and router ownership in the 70%–80% range. Those are ownership findings, not evidence of which products are most frequently leased. Asurion Tech Lifestyle Study 2024

Can you lease a phone?

Yes. Apple’s July 28, 2026 announcement describes Apple Upgrade as a U.S. option for leasing iPhones for 12 or 24 months, subject to eligibility and approval. Apple’s current program page says enrollment requires connecting the iPhone to AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. That requirement does not itself mean you must commit to remain with one carrier, but carrier terms still apply. Check the live offer for eligible models, payments, return requirements, and early-exit terms before enrolling. Apple’s announcement and Apple Upgrade and FAQ

Can you lease a laptop or tablet?

Yes, but the contract can differ substantially by provider. Apple Upgrade includes Mac models on 24- or 36-month terms and iPad on 24- or 36-month terms. Rent-A-Center lists laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. Progressive Leasing lists computers and tablets through Best Buy. In Canada, Best Buy’s separate Monthly Subscription applies to eligible laptops on a three-year term; at the end, customers can upgrade, return the device, or pay the Keep-the-Tech Amount, subject to the offer’s fees and eligibility rules.

These categories do not establish that every model is available everywhere. Confirm the specific device, location, application conditions, payment schedule, and whether returning the product ends your obligation or leaves a buyout amount. Can you lease a smartwatch?

Apple Upgrade lists Apple Watch as a U.S. lease category, with 12- or 24-month terms. Eligible models and configurations can change. Apple says the watch must be returned in good condition to avoid a damage fee; leaving early can require paying the remaining lease amounts and applicable taxes. A monthly starting payment is therefore not the full cost of keeping or using the watch. Review the current offer and return terms for the exact model. Apple Upgrade and FAQ

Lease, rent-to-own, and subscription: what is the difference?

The label matters because it determines whether you return the device, keep it after a buyout, or continue paying for a rental. Do not assume that a monthly payment automatically leads to ownership.

  • Lease with a return or upgrade choice: You make payments for a defined term and may have return or upgrade options. The contract can still include return-condition rules, fees, and early-exit costs.
  • Rent-to-own or lease-to-own: Payments may lead to ownership under the agreement’s terms. Progressive Leasing says ownership through its agreement costs more than the retailer’s cash price; early-purchase options, including its 90-day option, can also cost more than cash.
  • Rental: You pay to use the device for a period, with return terms set by the provider. Grover’s Germany site lists rentals of electronics, including consoles and TVs; check its local product and contract details.
  • Monthly subscription: The provider sets the subscription’s term and end-of-term options. Best Buy Canada’s eligible-laptop subscription is three years and offers upgrade, return, or payment of the Keep-the-Tech Amount, subject to stated fees and eligibility.

Is it cheaper to lease or buy?

The available offers do not establish that leasing is generally cheaper. Compare the total amount you would pay over the full contract with the device’s cash price, and account for fees, taxes, buyout amounts, and any return or damage charges. If you might leave early, include the contract’s early-payoff or exit cost. A low advertised monthly payment cannot answer the cost question by itself.

Apple’s July 28, 2026 announcement listed starting monthly lease amounts of $17.99 for iPhone, $11.99 for Apple Watch, $24.99 for Mac, and $11.99 for iPad. These are advertised starting amounts, not comparable total prices; Apple describes different terms by product, and the announcement does not establish that those rates remain available. It also gave examples—excluding taxes and trade-in credit—of $31.99 per month for a 24-month iPhone 17 Pro 256GB lease, $11.99 per month for a 24-month Apple Watch Series 11 GPS 42mm lease, $24.99 per month for a 36-month 11-inch iPad Pro 256GB lease, and $38.99 per month for a 36-month 14-inch MacBook Pro lease. What to check before signing

  1. Confirm the offer is available where you live. Apple Upgrade is U.S.-only, Best Buy Canada’s Monthly Subscription is Canadian, and the Grover examples cited here are from Germany. Provider inventory and local eligibility vary.
  2. Identify the contract structure. Find out whether you are signing a lease, rent-to-own agreement, rental, or subscription, and whether you can return, upgrade, buy out, or keep the device at term end.
  3. Calculate the full cost. Add all scheduled payments, fees, taxes, and any end-of-term buyout, then compare the result with the cash price of the same model.
  4. Read the early-exit terms. Check whether early payoff or cancellation requires remaining payments, additional charges, or taxes.
  5. Check approval language carefully. Apple says its lease application uses a soft credit inquiry. The Progressive Leasing/Best Buy page says no credit is needed to apply. These are different statements and neither means approval is guaranteed.
  6. Understand return condition rules. Check what condition is required, how damage is assessed, and what fees may apply if the device does not meet the standard.
  7. Verify the exact device and terms at checkout. Offers can depend on model, configuration, inventory, location, and approval; use the current provider terms rather than relying on a category page or an old advertised payment.
