A 4-pass color printer makes an image area in four printing passes. The number describes how the printer deposits the image, not how many ink colors it uses: a printer can use four-color CMYK ink and print in a four-pass mode, but those are separate specifications.

What does “4-pass” mean on a printer?

In multipass inkjet printing, the printhead makes more than one pass over an image area. In a four-pass mode, the printer divides image data or ink deposition across four passes. The precise carriage movement, media advances and allocation of image data depend on the printer and its print mode; “four-pass” does not prescribe one universal mechanism. A patent description of inkjet printing and a 2020 technical paper on inkjet printing describe ways these processes can be organized.

It is not safe to assume that each pass lays down exactly one quarter of the ink. Print masks, screening, interlacing, printhead design and motion all affect what happens on each scan. The pass count alone also does not specify resolution, measured in dpi, or guarantee a particular print quality.

Does 4-pass mean four colors?

No. “Four-pass” describes how the printer builds the image over multiple passes. “CMYK” describes a common ink set—cyan, magenta, yellow and black. A printer may use four CMYK colors and offer a four-pass mode, but pass count and color count are independent attributes. Check the printer’s ink configuration and print-mode specifications separately.

What changes when you use four passes?

Print time

Making multiple passes generally takes longer than completing the same image area in one pass, but there is no universal timing ratio. A 2020 paper states that, for its implementation and assumptions, “for an image of fixed size, four-pass printing will take 4 times longer than single-pass printing.” An industrial inkjet paper describes four-pass printing as taking “a little more than 4 times” as long, showing why neither figure should be treated as a general rule for every printer. The 2020 paper and the industrial printer paper discuss different technical contexts.

Uniformity and visible artifacts

Dividing image data among passes can spread the work across nozzles. If a nozzle fails, a print mask may allow other nozzles to contribute pixels that would otherwise be missing. Multipass printing can therefore reduce the visible effect of some nozzle problems, but it cannot guarantee a defect-free print. The benefit depends on the printer’s design and how the print mode distributes image data.

More passes can also produce a more homogeneous result in a particular printer’s workflow. The wallPen E2 User Manual, version 2.0.4, says: “The fewer passes, the faster, but also ‘coarser’ the print result. The more passes, the slower and more ‘homogeneous’ the print result will be.” Treat this as guidance for that product, not a universal promise about four-pass modes.

Image content and media

How useful additional passes are can depend on what is being printed and on the media. The wallPen manual notes that, in its system, text and graphics may look sharper with fewer passes, while gradients, images and large areas of color may benefit from more. That is a model-specific observation; it is not a rule for all inkjet printers or substrates.

Why the pass count alone cannot tell you print quality

“Four-pass” is a process setting, not a quality grade. A four-pass mode may be useful when its extra time is worthwhile for the printer, image and media involved, but the label by itself cannot tell you whether the result will be sharper, smoother or better than another mode. The cited sources do not establish a market-wide comparison across four-pass printer models.

For a concrete example, Epson lists a high-speed poster mode of 381 sq ft/hour in four-pass printing for its SureColor P10000, alongside 251 sq ft/hour for the listed six-pass mode. Those are Epson’s stated figures for that printer and its specified poster-printing context on various coated media types, not a general benchmark for four-pass printing. See the Epson SureColor P10000 product page.

How to judge a four-pass mode on your printer

  • Check the manual or driver: Confirm what the manufacturer means by “pass” and which print mode or media types it applies to.
  • Compare the actual output: If the printer offers multiple pass settings, consider the detail, gradients or large color areas in your own image rather than assuming more passes always look better.
  • Balance finish and time: More passes typically take longer. Use the mode that gives a suitable result for the job, allowing for the printer-specific trade-offs.
  • Keep separate specifications separate: Check ink colors, resolution and speed independently; none can be inferred from a four-pass label.
