The four names most clearly tied to documented non-compliant USB-C adapter cables are CableCreation, Monba, Kupx and Juiced Systems. A PCWorld report published on November 5, 2015, identified specific USB-C-to-USB-A or USB-C-to-USB-B cables associated with those vendors. That is historical, model-specific evidence—not proof that every cable those brands sell today is unsafe.

The underlying defect was serious: an incorrect resistor could let a USB-C device draw more power than a legacy USB-A source was designed to provide. Before buying or reusing an old cable, check the exact model, its markings and, when necessary, test its wiring.

What “worst” means in this list

“Worst” refers to documented failure to follow the USB-C specification in particular legacy-USB adapter cables. It does not mean these four companies have a proven current failure rate, nor that every product carrying one of the names is dangerous.

Google engineer Benson Leung brought attention to the problem while reviewing early USB-C cables. PCWorld quoted him saying: “I have started reviewing USB cables on Amazon because I have gotten fed up with the early cables from 3rd party vendors that so blatantly flaunt the specification and I want to hold them to task.”

The report named more vendors than the four covered here. These four are the requested examples, and the available evidence dates to the first years of consumer USB-C adoption.

The four documented examples

Brand named in the report Evidence date and source Connector type involved Defect and possible consequence What the evidence does—and does not—show
CableCreation PCWorld, November 5, 2015 USB-C to USB-A or USB-B adapter cable Incorrect or missing identification resistor could permit excessive current draw and possible port damage A finding about reviewed early adapter cable(s), not a present-day brand-wide assessment
Monba PCWorld, November 5, 2015 USB-C to legacy USB adapter cable Failure to implement the required resistor behavior could make a USB-C device treat a legacy source as higher-power than it was Historical, model-specific evidence
Kupx PCWorld, November 5, 2015 USB-C to legacy USB adapter cable Non-compliant wiring or resistor selection created an overcurrent risk Does not establish that all Kupx cables are unsafe today
Juiced Systems PCWorld, November 5, 2015 USB-C to legacy USB adapter cable The cable did not follow the required USB-C power-identification design, with potential charging or hardware consequences Evidence concerns the early cable(s) reviewed in 2015, not a current laboratory audit

CableCreation

CableCreation appeared in Leung’s list of vendors whose early USB-C adapter cables were identified as non-compliant. The relevant distinction is the USB-C connector on one end and a legacy USB-A or USB-B plug on the other; USB-C-to-USB-C cables follow a different negotiation design.

Monba

Monba was listed in the same 2015 account. The report supports identifying the reviewed adapter cable as a historical example, but it provides no basis for assigning a failure rate to the company’s entire catalog.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference

Kupx

Kupx also appeared in Leung’s list. The technical concern was the cable’s handling of the resistor that tells a USB-C device how much power a legacy source can safely provide.

Juiced Systems

Juiced Systems was another vendor named in the 2015 report. Readers should treat the name as a warning to verify an old, unidentified adapter cable—not as a blanket judgment about every current product.

Why a bad USB-C-to-USB-A cable can damage hardware

The 56kΩ pull-up resistor

A compliant USB-C-to-USB-A cable uses the specified 56kΩ pull-up resistor on the configuration-channel connection. That resistor signals that the USB-C device is attached to a lower-power legacy USB-A source. The device can then limit its draw appropriately.

If the resistor is absent or has the wrong value, the device may interpret the connection as a higher-power USB-C source and request more current than the USB-A port, cable or charger can safely supply. The result can be charging failure, overheating, a damaged USB port or damage to another connected component.

USB Power Delivery raises the stakes

UL Solutions states that USB Power Delivery can provide up to 20 volts and 5.0 amperes—100 watts. Poorly designed power and charging cables can therefore do more than charge slowly; UL warns that they can damage equipment and increase fire risk.

What larger tests found

UL Solutions’ 2017 guidance cites an evaluation of more than 100 USB-C-to-USB-A adapters in which more than half failed applicable USB specifications. The same guidance reports that less than 28% of randomly sourced open-market USB cables met its cited flame-test criterion.

PCWorld’s 2022 examination of 43 older USB-C-to-USB-A cables found 10 that were constructed improperly or dangerously. Five had no 56kΩ resistor and were classified as dangerous to use. Recognizable manufacturers were included in that older sample, so a familiar logo alone is not a safety test.

How to choose a safer USB-C cable

1. Identify the exact model

Record the model number, connector combination, power rating and data-speed claim. Product photos, seller names and packaging can be reused across listings; the exact cable model is the useful unit of comparison.

2. Look for verifiable USB-IF information

The USB Implementers Forum says its certification program is intended to give users a list of cables that meet the quality standards needed to operate in a USB environment. For compliant USB-C-to-USB-C cables, USB-IF says the applicable 60W or 240W power marking should be present, and higher-speed cables should show the appropriate data-rate marking. Certification is particularly valuable when a cable will carry high power or high-speed data, but a marking should still correspond to the exact model being sold.

3. Treat old and anonymous adapters cautiously

Do not assume an adapter is safe because it came free with another product or because its plug fits. PCWorld’s 2022 test found dangerous older examples among cables from recognizable manufacturers. Unknown-provenance cables mixed into boxes of spare or “free” cables are poor candidates for charging a laptop or phone.

4. Use a cable tester when the cable matters

A USB-C cable tester can check continuity, wiring and whether the expected 56kΩ resistor is present. PCWorld identified the ADUSBCIM Cable Checker 2 as a tool for this type of inspection. A tester result applies to the cable in your hand; it does not certify every cable sold under the same brand.

How to test an old USB-C adapter safely

  1. Separate the cable. Do not connect an unknown adapter to an expensive laptop, phone or high-wattage charger first.
  2. Inspect the hardware. Reject cables with crushed plugs, loose housings, exposed conductors, heat discoloration or a connector that fits unusually tightly.
  3. Check the model and markings. Photograph the labels and compare the power and data claims with the exact manufacturer listing or certification record, if one exists.
  4. Run a cable test. Use a tester that explicitly checks CC wiring and the 56kΩ resistor, following its instructions. A missing resistor is a reason to retire a USB-C-to-USB-A cable.
  5. Retire failed or uncertain cables. Do not keep using a cable that fails continuity, shows abnormal resistance or becomes hot during ordinary low-power use.

Cable safety is not the same as charger safety

A cable can be compliant while the power adapter is counterfeit, and a genuine cable can be paired with an unsafe charger. In July 2025, the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards reported a counterfeit Apple-branded USB-C power adapter whose plug pins did not meet BS 1363 requirements, creating a serious fire and electric-shock risk. That finding concerns a counterfeit mains adapter; it is not evidence against genuine Apple cables.

When checking a charging setup, evaluate the cable, charger, plug, socket and any travel adapter separately. Stop using the entire setup if a plug, adapter or cable shows heat, arcing, smell or physical damage.

What this evidence means for buyers today

No comprehensive current laboratory ranking of all products sold by CableCreation, Monba, Kupx or Juiced Systems establishes a present-day brand-wide failure rate. The defensible conclusion is narrower: those vendors were named in a 2015 report about specific non-compliant USB-C-to-legacy-USB adapter cables. The safest buying decision is to verify the exact model, prefer traceable USB-IF information when the use case demands it, and test or replace unidentified older adapters rather than trusting a brand name alone.
