For most wireless calls, choose the Sony WF-1000XM6. RTINGS named it its top tested earbuds for phone calls in its April 13, 2026 update and retained that choice on August 12; SoundGuys reached the same overall conclusion in its February 12, 2026 guide. It captures clear speech in moderate background noise, but very loud sounds such as a passing train can trigger its microphone noise gate and make words harder to understand.
If a cable is acceptable, Apple EarPods provide a practical alternative because their inline microphone sits closer to your mouth. OnePlus Buds 4 are the stronger mid-range choice, while CMF Buds Pro 2 offer a lower-cost route to usable call quality. None of these is a universal substitute for a boom-microphone headset in extreme noise, and local stock, connector versions and prices vary by market.

What makes a microphone good for calls?
Call quality is not the same as music quality. A listener needs to hear consonants, word endings and changes in volume while the microphone suppresses fans, traffic, keyboard noise and wind. Earbuds have a structural disadvantage: their microphones are on the ear rather than beside the mouth. The longer acoustic path makes voice pickup and noise rejection more dependent on microphone processing, ear-tip seal, fit and the surrounding sound.

RTINGS notes that earbuds generally do not deliver the microphone quality of headsets designed specifically for calls. A headset with a boom places its capsule much nearer the mouth and usually has a more predictable angle. It is bulkier, however, and can be less comfortable for all-day mobile use. The best choice therefore depends on where calls happen, not just on a model’s music features.
Noise gates can help and hurt
Noise reduction attempts to remove steady or competing sounds. A noise gate may mute the microphone when it decides that the input is background noise. That can make an office recording cleaner, but an unusually loud event can cause the gate to suppress the start or middle of a sentence. RTINGS specifically reports this behavior on the WF-1000XM6 when very loud sounds, including passing trains, occur.
Fit changes the result
A loose earbud can let outside sound reach the microphones and can alter the way your voice resonates in the ear canal. Try the supplied tips, run any fit test in the companion app, and keep microphone openings free of skin, hair and debris. These steps cannot overcome a loud environment, but they remove common causes of muffled speech.

Sony WF-1000XM6: the strongest wireless call choice
RTINGS’ April 13, 2026 update selected the Sony WF-1000XM6 as its top tested earbuds for phone calls and its August 12 update retained the recommendation. SoundGuys independently named the same model its overall call-focused earbud in its February 12, 2026 guide. Across those reviews, the useful distinction is not a claim of perfect isolation; it is clear speech with effective separation from moderate background activity.
What the reviews report
- RTINGS describes speech as clear against moderately busy backgrounds.
- SoundGuys reports strong microphone performance in standardized recordings and noisy scenarios.
- SoundGuys says the earbuds use eight microphones, AI beamforming and an improved bone-conduction sensor. Those are details reported by the review, not independently verified specifications in this guide.
- SoundGuys also reports that Sony’s AI noise-rejection system was trained on 500 million voice samples. Treat that figure as the review’s report rather than an independently confirmed manufacturer statistic.
Where it falls short
Do not buy the WF-1000XM6 expecting a subway platform or busy road to become a quiet studio. RTINGS warns that particularly loud sounds can trigger the microphone’s noise gate, making speech harder to understand. If your calls routinely coincide with trains, sirens, construction or strong wind, a boom microphone or a wired inline microphone close to your mouth may be more reliable.
Who should buy it
Choose this model when you want true-wireless convenience, active noise cancellation for listening and a microphone that performs well in ordinary offices, homes, shops and moderate street noise. It is the most defensible first choice among the reviewed wireless earbuds, but the environmental warning should be part of the purchase decision.

Apple EarPods (USB-C): the practical wired alternative
Apple EarPods are inexpensive, open-fit wired earphones with an inline microphone. SoundGuys lists the USB-C version as a budget option for iPhone calls, and RTINGS’ testing of the 3.5 mm version explains why the design remains useful: the microphone is closer to your mouth than the capsules on most wireless earbuds.

Distance is a simple advantage. A microphone a few centimetres below your mouth receives more of your voice relative to room noise than a microphone sitting on the outer surface of an earbud. That can make words easier to capture in a quiet office or on a lightly busy street, even without sophisticated wireless processing.
Trade-offs to accept
- The cable can snag on clothing, a bag or a desk edge.
- The open fit does not seal the ear and provides no active noise cancellation, so you hear your surroundings and callers may hear them too.
- USB-C, Lightning and 3.5 mm versions are not interchangeable without the appropriate port or adapter.
- Because the earphones are wired, there is no wireless battery to charge, but your device must have a compatible physical connection.
Check the port on your phone, tablet or laptop before ordering. RTINGS tested the 3.5 mm model and notes that USB-C and Lightning versions are available for different devices; connector availability and bundled adapters vary by region.
OnePlus Buds 4: the mid-range call option
RTINGS identifies OnePlus Buds 4 as a capable mid-range choice. Its review describes voice pickup as clear and full, although not especially lifelike, with good handling of background noise. That makes the model suitable for routine calls when you want wireless earbuds without moving to the most expensive tier.
Important limitations
RTINGS measured less than five hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled. That figure is a test result under the review’s conditions, not a promise for every listening pattern or firmware version. The review also found laptop multipoint behavior inconsistent during testing. If you switch frequently between a phone and a work laptop, confirm that your particular devices reconnect as expected before relying on this model for meetings.

CMF Buds Pro 2: a value-tier microphone
RTINGS describes CMF Buds Pro 2 as a budget option with a useful call microphone and decent voice isolation, including in noisier surroundings. That is a positive value finding, not evidence that it performs like a dedicated conference headset or like the top wireless pick in every acoustic condition.
Consider it when price is the primary constraint and your calls take place mostly indoors or in moderate noise. Test the return policy and microphone behavior with your own phone before depending on it for important interviews, presentations or customer calls.

Choose by the place where you call
Quiet home office
All four options can be reasonable starting points in a quiet room. The Sony gives wireless freedom and ANC for listening; the EarPods offer the shortest microphone path; the OnePlus and CMF models cover mid-range and budget wireless needs. Check that your laptop selects the earbuds’ headset microphone rather than its built-in microphone.
Shared office or café
Moderate background noise is where the Sony and OnePlus reviews provide the strongest evidence. Their processing is intended to separate speech from competing sound, but ask a colleague to confirm how you sound before an important meeting. EarPods may still work well if the inline microphone is close to your mouth, although the open fit does not reduce what you hear.
Train platform, traffic and construction
These are difficult conditions for any earbud. The WF-1000XM6 warning about very loud sounds is especially relevant: a passing train can cause the noise gate to suppress speech. Move away from the source, pause until the sound passes, or use a headset with a boom microphone. If you must stay in place, a close wired microphone may preserve intelligibility better than a distant earbud microphone, but it cannot remove all environmental noise.
Wind and outdoor calls
Wind turbulence reaches small earbud microphones directly. SoundGuys says its testing includes simulated wind and reverberant spaces, while RTINGS publishes recordings and discusses environmental limitations. Treat those controlled results as comparative guidance, not a guarantee for your exact street, voice or phone. Shield the microphones from direct gusts and avoid touching the earbud housings while speaking.

Long meetings and back-to-back calls
Battery and comfort become as important as microphone quality. The OnePlus Buds 4 review’s under-five-hour ANC result may be insufficient for a long day without charging. Wired EarPods avoid battery management but tie you to a port. Wireless models are more convenient when you need to stand up or move around, provided you have a charging routine.
Wired versus wireless microphones
Wireless earbuds win on mobility, charging cases and the absence of a cable. They can also combine ANC, transparency modes and automatic device controls. Their microphones sit farther from the mouth, however, and performance depends on wireless processing, firmware, fit and the phone’s Bluetooth headset profile.
Wired EarPods sacrifice freedom of movement but put the microphone near your mouth and eliminate Bluetooth pairing and earbud battery concerns. Their open fit and connector requirements are real costs. For a person who takes occasional calls at a desk, that trade can be worthwhile; for someone walking between rooms all day, it may be frustrating.
Compatibility and setup before your first call
- Identify the device port. Check whether your phone or computer has USB-C, Lightning or a 3.5 mm audio jack. Purchase the matching EarPods version or a compatible adapter; do not assume a charging adapter supports microphone input.
- Pair wireless earbuds completely. Install the manufacturer’s companion app if you need firmware updates or fit controls, then confirm that the operating system lists the earbuds as both output and input devices.
- Select the input manually. In a video-meeting app, open audio settings and choose the earbuds’ headset microphone. On a computer, the selected output and input can differ.
- Make a local recording. Record 20 to 30 seconds while speaking at normal volume. Listen for clipped beginnings, muffled consonants and sudden muting before joining a real meeting.
- Repeat in the real environment. Test once in quiet and once with the background sound you actually face. A result in a silent bedroom cannot predict a train platform.
- Check switching behavior. Move between your phone and laptop and place a short test call on each. This is particularly important if you expect laptop multipoint from the OnePlus Buds 4.
How to interpret the review testing
RTINGS says its 2026 phone-call guide covers more than 370 pairs of earbuds and in-ear headphones, with recordings and discussion of environmental limitations. SoundGuys says it evaluates microphone performance in standardized recordings and noisy scenarios, including wind and reverberant spaces, and uses a calibrated mouth simulator for conference-call testing. It also publishes recordings for listeners.
These methods make products easier to compare under controlled conditions. They do not control your voice, ear shape, ear-tip seal, phone model, Bluetooth implementation, network compression or exact location. Use the rankings to narrow the field, then make a short recording with your own device before the return period ends.
Buying checklist for earbuds with a mic
- Speech clarity: Can listeners understand quiet speech and consonants, not merely hear that you are talking?
- Noisy performance: Is the evidence from moderate background noise, or does it address the very loud environment you face?
- Microphone distance: An inline or boom microphone is closer to the mouth than a wireless earbud microphone.
- Connection: Decide whether you need USB-C, Lightning, 3.5 mm or Bluetooth, and whether an adapter preserves microphone input.
- Device switching: Verify phone-to-laptop behavior instead of assuming every multipoint implementation works equally well.
- Battery: Check the tested runtime with ANC enabled, not only the longest manufacturer claim.
- Fit and comfort: A secure seal and comfortable pressure matter during an hour-long call.
- Listening features: ANC can improve what you hear, but it does not guarantee that callers hear a quiet signal.
- Return terms: Microphone quality is personal; retain a return option until you have tested your voice in realistic conditions.
- Local availability: Confirm the exact model generation, connector, warranty and price in your country before purchase.
Fixes for common call problems
Listeners say your voice is quiet
- Reseat the earbuds and try a different ear-tip size if the model supplies one.
- Inspect and gently clean the microphone openings; do not block them with a case edge, hair or a finger.
- Move the phone or laptop closer and verify that the call app is using the earbud microphone.
- Make a recording outside the call app. If the recording is quiet too, the issue is fit, hardware or input selection rather than the network.
Speech cuts out when traffic passes
That symptom is consistent with aggressive noise gating. Move away from the noise, wait for the event to pass, or switch to a close wired or boom microphone. Increasing your speaking volume alone may not help if the processor is classifying the event as dominant background sound.

The computer keeps using its own microphone
Open the operating system’s sound panel and the meeting app’s audio panel separately. Select the earbuds as input in both places, then leave and rejoin the meeting if the app does not apply the change. A Bluetooth device can appear as a music output while its headset input remains unselected.
Battery ends during a meeting
Charge the case before a call-heavy day, disable ANC when you do not need it, and keep a wired backup available if your device supports it. The OnePlus Buds 4’s reported under-five-hour ANC runtime makes this preparation especially important for that model.
When a dedicated headset is the better answer
Choose a headset with a boom microphone when calls are a central part of your job, when you work beside traffic or machinery, or when missed words have a real cost. The boom places the microphone closer to your mouth and generally provides a more predictable signal than an earbud. The trade-offs are larger size, a more visible design and potentially less convenient mobile use.

Earbuds remain the better fit for people who alternate between music, calls and movement, need a small case, or make calls in mostly moderate environments. The key is to match the microphone design to the noise rather than assuming the newest wireless model will overcome every setting.
Availability, versions and price checks
The review guides establish performance comparisons, not a worldwide stock guarantee. Regional listings can differ by connector, color, warranty, firmware and model name. Before ordering, confirm that the listing is for the WF-1000XM6, EarPods USB-C, OnePlus Buds 4 or CMF Buds Pro 2 you intend to buy, and check the seller’s return policy for opened audio products.

For consistently extreme noise, skip the assumption that earbuds are enough and choose a boom-microphone headset instead.
