What to know about each game
Fortnite: the widest variety
Fortnite is more than a battle royale option. PlayStation highlights Battle Royale and Zero Build as well as live events and creator-made games, making it the best pick here if you want several types of play in one download. Its PlayStation game page describes creating, playing, and battling with friends for free. The page also lists paid V-Bucks and packs, so free access to the base game does not mean every optional item is free.

Apex Legends: squad-based hero shooting
Apex Legends is a first-person hero shooter centered on team play and strategy. Electronic Arts explicitly confirms in its Apex Legends FAQ that PS Plus is not needed to play online on PS4 or PS5. EA also says the game requires a persistent internet connection and an EA account, and includes in-game purchases.

PlayStation’s Warframe page lists it for PS4 and PS5, says online play is required, and describes in-game purchases as optional.
Rocket League: quick car-football matches
Rocket League turns football into an arcade competition with vehicles. PlayStation describes formats for one-on-one play, duos, and teams of three, so it works whether you want to compete alone or bring a small group. Its concise match format makes it the most immediately pick-up-and-play choice in this shortlist.

Does online play require PS Plus?
The question is whether these free-to-play games let you access online play without paying for a PS Plus plan. Electronic Arts answers that directly for Apex Legends: “No, you do not need PlayStation®Plus to play Apex Legends on PlayStation®4 or PlayStation®5.” PlayStation India’s official 2023 video about online games that do not need a PS Plus subscription lists Fortnite, Rocket League, Apex Legends, and Warframe.

What “free” includes—and what it does not
Free refers to access to the base game; it does not necessarily remove requirements for an account, internet access, or optional purchases. For example, Apex Legends requires persistent internet and an EA account, while Warframe requires online play. Fortnite lists optional paid currency and packs. Check the current game listing for details relevant to your console and country.
