If you want a game where combat is a major strength, choose by the kind of fighting you enjoy: flexible builds and approaches in Elden Ring, timing-focused swordplay in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, expressive combos in Devil May Cry 5, or precision-focused encounters in Lies of P. None is a universal best; each rewards different skills and preferences.
What makes combat feel great?
Combat quality is subjective, and “action game” covers very different experiences. Consider how responsive the controls feel, whether enemies and encounters make you think, how much timing or execution the game demands, and how much room it gives you to vary your approach or build. Bandai Namco’s overview likewise highlights responsiveness, feel, and enemy design as important qualities of action combat: what makes a great action game.
The right choice depends on which of those qualities matters most to you. The games below are distinct options, not a ranking.

Choose Elden Ring for build variety and freedom
Elden Ring suits players who like trying different weapons, magical abilities, and skills rather than committing to one combat routine. Pick it if experimentation is part of the appeal: you can change weapons or skills and seek a different approach when a challenge is not working. It is a less direct fit if you specifically want every fight to revolve around a tightly defined timing loop.
Choose Sekiro for deflects and posture breaks
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice centers its sword combat on attacking and deflecting to break an opponent’s posture. A successful deflection can damage posture and create an opening for a counter-slash; breaking posture creates a limited chance to deliver a deathblow. Combat arts and skill trees add further options, but the core loop asks you to stay engaged with the opponent rather than rely on a broad set of build changes. Choose it if you want to learn an assertive, timing-and-response style and enjoy reading attacks. Its appeal is less about finding a different weapon build for every obstacle and more about improving your execution within its combat system.

It can work for players who want to build confidence at a more accessible setting and for those who want to chase a higher execution ceiling. Choose it over a timing-centered sword game if chaining attacks and maintaining momentum sound more appealing than focusing on deflections.
Choose Lies of P for precision and boss fights

Consider it if you want to learn opponents’ attacks and tune your gear or build around a demanding encounter. Its focus differs from Elden Ring’s broader range of approaches and from Devil May Cry 5’s combo-centered action.
