When a Windows PC feels slow, start by observing it while the slowdown is happening. Task Manager shows which resource is under pressure, Resource Monitor narrows that pressure to individual activity, Process Explorer explains an unclear process, and Autoruns identifies programs that load at startup. If the problem is a repeating file or Registry operation, add Process Monitor for a short, filtered trace.

Use the tools in this order

These utilities answer different questions, so using them sequentially is more reliable than guessing from one percentage. Observe first, identify the owner of the activity, and change settings only after you understand what an entry does.

  1. Open Task Manager during the slowdown and find the constrained resource.
  2. Use Resource Monitor to compare per-process activity with the moment the system feels slow.
  3. Open Process Explorer when the process name does not explain the behavior.
  4. Use Autoruns for the separate question of which programs load during boot or sign-in.
  5. Capture a brief Process Monitor trace only when the symptom is reproducible and appears tied to repeated system activity.

1. Task Manager: find the bottleneck quickly

Microsoft describes Task Manager as “an application that serves as a system monitor and startup manager for Windows, providing insights into your device’s performance and resource consumption.” It reports CPU load, memory usage, disk activity, network usage and startup applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do

  1. Open Task Manager (for example, with Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. Stay on the Processes view while the PC is actually slow.
  3. Click the CPU, Memory, Disk or Network column to sort by that resource.
  4. Watch whether one process remains at the top and whether the total resource remains constrained for more than a brief spike.

A high percentage is a clue, not a diagnosis. A short CPU burst may be normal, while a process that continually consumes disk or memory during every slowdown deserves investigation. Note the process name and the resource that stays busy before moving to the next tool.

2. Resource Monitor: narrow the resource

Resource Monitor provides a more detailed view after Task Manager reveals a broad CPU, memory, disk or network problem. Its value is comparison: look at individual activity at the exact moment the computer feels slow rather than relying on an overall percentage.

How to investigate

  1. Open Resource Monitor from Windows while reproducing the slowdown.
  2. Choose the resource area that matches your Task Manager observation.
  3. Compare the processes generating activity with the time the lag, pause or delayed application response occurs.
  4. Record the process that consistently accounts for the activity, rather than the process that appears only during a momentary spike.

This step can separate a genuinely busy process from a misleading aggregate reading. For example, a high disk total may come from one process doing sustained work, or from many small operations that are easier to distinguish in the detailed view.

3. Process Explorer: inspect what a process really owns

Process Explorer is the deeper process-level inspection tool. Microsoft says it shows active processes, their owning accounts, open handles, loaded DLLs and memory-mapped files. Its search can find which process holds a particular handle or DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it helps

  • Task Manager shows a generic or unfamiliar process name.
  • You need to know which account owns the process.
  • An application or file appears locked and you need to identify the process holding its handle.
  • You suspect a loaded DLL or memory-mapped file is involved.

Practical workflow

  1. Open Process Explorer after Resource Monitor identifies the process or when Task Manager cannot explain it.
  2. Locate the process and inspect its owning account and associated handles, DLLs and memory-mapped files.
  3. Use Process Explorer’s search when you know the handle or DLL name but not the owning process.
  4. Use the evidence to decide what to investigate next; do not terminate or alter a process merely because its name is unfamiliar.

The Microsoft Sysinternals catalog lists Process Explorer v17.14 (2026). Microsoft Learn lists a 3.5 MB download and says this version runs on Windows 11 and higher and Windows Server 2019 and higher.

4. Autoruns: find startup programs that add boot and sign-in drag

Autoruns answers a different question from the other utilities: which programs are configured to run during boot or login? It lists those entries and shows the Registry and file locations that configure automatic startup.

Review entries safely

  1. Open Autoruns and review third-party entries configured for automatic execution.
  2. Check the publisher, executable location and stated function before changing anything.
  3. Disable only an entry whose purpose you understand and whose automatic launch you do not need.
  4. Restart or sign in again and observe whether boot or login behavior changes.

Do not disable an entry solely because its name looks unfamiliar. A startup item may belong to security software, hardware support or another component the system needs. If you cannot identify its publisher and function, leave it enabled until you can verify those details.

  1. Start Process Monitor and create a filter for the suspected process or path.
  2. Begin capture, reproduce the slowdown once, then stop capture promptly.
  3. Review the filtered sequence for repeated operations that coincide with the delay.
  4. Remove or refine the filter and repeat only if the first trace is too broad to interpret.

A short, focused capture is easier to understand than an unrestricted trace, which can quickly contain more events than you can correlate with the symptom. The catalog lists Process Monitor v4.11 (2026).

How the four main tools differ

Tool Scope Time resolution Diagnostic depth Best question
Task Manager Whole-system snapshot and process list Current view Resource totals and startup overview Which resource is busy right now?
Resource Monitor Detailed resource and per-process activity Current activity correlated with the slowdown More granular CPU, memory, disk and network evidence Which process is creating the pressure?
Process Explorer One process and its relationships Current inspection Accounts, handles, DLLs and memory-mapped files What does this process own or load?
Autoruns Boot and login configuration Configuration view Registry and file locations for auto-start entries Which programs launch automatically?

Process Monitor is an escalation rather than a replacement for the four-step workflow: it records an event trace, while the others provide snapshots or configuration evidence. The safest sequence is observe, identify, inspect and only then change a startup setting.

What to record before you change anything

  • The symptom and the exact time it occurs.
  • The resource that remains constrained: CPU, memory, disk or network.
  • The process name shown by Task Manager and confirmed in Resource Monitor.
  • Any owning account, handle, DLL or file path that Process Explorer reveals.
  • The publisher and purpose of an Autoruns entry before disabling it.

This record prevents a common mistake: treating a busy resource as proof that the visible process is the root cause. Correlating the activity with the actual moment of slowdown gives you evidence for the next step.
