These four free DNS services stand out for specific kinds of filtering—not because evidence shows they are universally faster or more private than Google Public DNS or Cloudflare’s standard resolver. Choose Quad9 for malicious-domain blocking, AdGuard DNS for ad and tracker filtering, CleanBrowsing Family for family filtering with supported safe-search enforcement, or OpenDNS FamilyShield for a preconfigured adult-content filter.
Which free DNS server fits your needs?
| Service | Best fit | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Quad9 | Blocking known malicious domains | Threat blocking for malware, phishing, spyware, and botnets; Quad9 says it does not log data containing the client IP address. |
| AdGuard DNS | Blocking ads and trackers at the DNS level | Default public filtering blocks ads, trackers, malware, and phishing; its Family mode adds adult-content blocking and supported safe search. |
| CleanBrowsing Family | Family-oriented filtering | A 2025 TechRadar review describes a Family filter with supported safe-search enforcement and VPN/proxy-site blocking. |
| OpenDNS FamilyShield | A simple adult-content filter | A 2025 TechRadar review describes FamilyShield as a free option configured to block adult content. |
These are feature distinctions, not proof that any service beats Google or Cloudflare at every job. Google Public DNS is designed as a generally unfiltered resolver, with rare security or legal exceptions; Google documents IPv4 addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and support for DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT). The comparison with Cloudflare here is limited to its standard resolver mode, not every filtering option it may offer.
What each service does well—and where its limits are
Quad9: block threat-listed domains
Quad9 says it blocks domains associated with malware, phishing, spyware, and botnets. This is resolver-level protection: if a domain is on a threat list, the resolver can prevent a device from looking it up. It is not a guarantee against every malicious site, and it does not replace updated software, endpoint protection, or cautious browsing.

Quad9’s homepage reports “670M+ Average Daily Blocks,” “230+ Resolver Clusters in over 110 countries,” and “25+ Threat Intelligence Providers.” These are Quad9’s own operational figures, not independently audited comparative performance measures. The service also states that its systems do not log data containing the client IP address. Quad9’s service and privacy information

AdGuard DNS: filter ads and trackers at domain lookup
AdGuard DNS’s default public server blocks ads, trackers, malware, and phishing. Family mode adds adult-content blocking and safe search on supported search services. Its documentation lists DNSCrypt, DoH, DoT, and DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ), giving users several encrypted DNS transport choices where their device or app supports them.
DNS filtering works on domain requests, not every ad element, URL path, or in-app placement. Some ads may remain, while a blocked domain can also disrupt a site or app feature. If something stops working, try a less restrictive mode or temporarily return to your prior DNS setting to identify whether filtering caused the issue. AdGuard DNS documentation

CleanBrowsing Family: combine family filtering and safe search
A 2025 TechRadar review describes CleanBrowsing’s free Security, Adult, and Family filters. It says the Family filter also puts supported search services into safe-search modes and blocks VPN and proxy sites. That account is a secondary editorial source, not current provider documentation. TechRadar’s 2025 review describes FamilyShield as a free OpenDNS option configured to block adult content. The same review describes regular free OpenDNS as offering configurable content filtering and anti-phishing, which is a different setup from FamilyShield’s preconfigured approach. Because the cited review is dated, check OpenDNS’s current official availability and setup instructions before switching; this article does not provide resolver addresses. What DNS filtering can—and cannot—control
A DNS resolver translates a domain name into the network information needed to reach a service. Filtering at that point can block lookups for listed domains, but it does not inspect every page element or URL path. It is therefore not equivalent to browser ad blocking or comprehensive parental-control software. False positives can make legitimate sites or app functions fail.
- For fewer ads and trackers: DNS filtering can reduce connections to known ad and tracking domains, but it will not remove every ad.
- For family safety: adult-content filters and safe search can reduce exposure, but they do not provide full device supervision. Pair them with device-level controls if broader oversight is the goal.
- For security: threat blocking can stop some known malicious domains, but cannot make every link or download safe.
Does encrypted DNS hide your browsing?
No. DoH, DoT, DNSCrypt, and DoQ encrypt DNS traffic between your device or DNS client and the recursive resolver. That helps protect DNS requests in transit, but it does not make you anonymous or conceal all browsing activity. Other parties may still be able to infer activity through connections to websites, account activity, or other network information. How to choose and set up a resolver
- Pick the filtering job first. Choose one service and mode that matches your need: threat blocking, ad and tracker filtering, or family filtering.
- Check device compatibility and current instructions. Use the provider’s current official setup material for your operating system, browser, or router. Google’s setup guidance illustrates that resolver addresses are configured in network settings; a purchase is not inherently required. Google Public DNS setup instructions
- Use one provider and mode for a consistent policy. Configured primary and secondary resolvers may not be used in a predictable fallback order on every device. Mixing resolvers with different filtering or DNSSEC behavior can weaken the effective filtering or, in certain configurations, disable DNSSEC protection, as Google’s FAQ explains. Google Public DNS FAQ
- Test the sites and apps you rely on. If something breaks, switch to a less restrictive mode or restore your previous DNS setting, then check whether the problem disappears.
- Consider scope before changing settings. A device-level change affects that device; router-level DNS can apply across a home network if the router supports it. On a work device or network, follow the organization’s DNS and security policies rather than changing settings unilaterally.
Can you choose based on speed?
There is no supported universal speed winner among these services, Google, and Cloudflare. DNS latency depends on location, network routing, and caching, so a result from one connection may not hold for another. If speed is your priority, compare response times from your own network under similar conditions instead of relying on a blanket ranking.
