A more expensive Ethernet cable does not automatically make your internet faster, and an older cable is not automatically too slow for multigigabit networking. What matters is whether the cable, installed link, and network equipment can support the connection you need.

Myth 1: A higher-category cable automatically makes your internet faster

Cable category describes the performance a cabling system is designed to support; it does not increase your internet plan’s speed or make a router, switch, or computer negotiate a faster link than its hardware allows. A cable can be a bottleneck, but replacing one that already supports the connection will not, by itself, improve internet speed.

Fluke Networks lists Cat 5e for 1000BASE-T at a 100 m channel basis, Cat 6 for 10GBASE-T at 35 m, and Cat 6A for 10GBASE-T at 100 m. Those figures describe cabling capabilities, not a guarantee that any cable bearing the category label will deliver that rate in every installation. A compliant installed link also depends on connecting hardware and installation, and may need a compliant field test. See Fluke Networks’ cabling and troubleshooting guide.

Before upgrading, check the negotiated link rate and the capabilities of both endpoint ports. If the link already runs at the rate your devices and service can use, changing the category is unlikely to help.

Myth 2: Cat 5e or Cat 6 must always be replaced for speeds above 1 Gb/s

Not necessarily. The NBASE-T Alliance announced specifications for 2.5 and 5 Gb/s over existing Cat 5e and Cat 6 cabling for distances up to 100 m. That announcement describes a technology capability, not a guarantee for every aging, poorly terminated, or bundled cable installation. Fluke cautions that not all Cat 5e installations support NBASE-T; Cisco likewise calls out installation conditions and recommends testing complete higher-speed links.

The practical question is whether the actual end-to-end link—including cable, connectors, termination, routing, and equipment—can sustain the intended rate. Check the device and switch specifications, then test or certify the installed link if the result needs to be dependable. A cable label alone does not certify the channel.

That is an industry statement about the technology, not an independent test of any particular installation. The alliance’s announcement is at NBASE-T Alliance.

When Cat 6A is relevant

If you need a new 10GBASE-T copper run specified for up to 100 m, Cat 6A is the straightforward choice in the cited guidance. It is not a universal upgrade for everyone: the ports, run length, and installation must make 10 Gb/s useful. Cisco’s C9350 switch documentation gives Cat 6 up to 55 m for 10 Gb/s in that equipment context, while Fluke’s category table lists 35 m. Both sources list Cat 6A at up to 100 m. Treat Cat 6 10G reach as installation- and guidance-dependent, not a universal 100 m promise. See Cisco’s C9350 front-panel guidance and the Fluke Networks guide.

Myth 3: If a long cable works, any length is within spec

A link that comes up is not necessarily a standards-compliant installation. Cisco describes 100 m as the conventional maximum four-pair copper Ethernet channel length. Beyond that reach, a design may need fiber, an extender, or a specifically validated long-reach solution rather than simply a longer copper cable. The right option depends on the equipment and route; do not assume an arbitrary overlength run will be reliable.

Fluke explains that an overlength cable may still work for many LAN applications yet fail structured cabling standards. In other words, “it links” and “it meets the cabling standard” are different claims. See Cisco’s CPwE Physical Infrastructure Design Guide and Fluke’s explanation of network cable propagation delay.

Myth 4: Shielded Ethernet cable is always better

Shielding is an application choice, not a universal speed upgrade. Cisco notes that electrical noise in industrial environments can make shielded cable appropriate in some cases. For extreme electromagnetic interference, fiber’s inherent noise immunity can make it a better fit. Neither point means every home or small office needs shielded cable, or that shielding by itself increases link speed.

Choose the cable type for the environment and the installation requirements. If a route passes through an electrically noisy area, follow the equipment and installation guidance for that setting rather than buying shielded cable on the assumption that it is always superior. Cisco discusses environmental conditions and fiber alternatives in its CPwE Physical Infrastructure Design Guide.

What to check before replacing Ethernet cable

  • Equipment: Confirm the port capabilities of the router, switch, and connected devices. The cable cannot make a slower port support a higher rate.
  • Run and installation: Consider the full channel, including length, connectors, terminations, cable condition, and bundling—not just the printed category.
  • Actual need: Match the link rate to the devices and service you use. A category upgrade only helps if the existing cabling is limiting a connection you can otherwise use.
  • Verification: For an installation that needs standards assurance, use appropriate certification testing. A basic continuity check is not the same as certification of the complete channel.
  • Long or noisy routes: Consider a purpose-designed fiber or extender solution where distance or electromagnetic noise makes ordinary copper unsuitable.
