For most backpacking and camping trips, four useful gadget categories are a portable water filter, a hands-free headlamp, a navigation backup and—when you’ll be beyond reliable cell service—a satellite communicator or personal locator beacon (PLB). They are not a universal ranking: choose based on your route, water access, weather, trip length and ability to use the equipment. They also complement, rather than replace, the broader Ten Essentials.
1. Portable water filter
A compact backpacking filter can treat water collected from lakes and streams, which can reduce how much water you need to carry when dependable sources are available along the route. The National Park Service says backcountry drinking and cooking water should be treated; its options include filtering, purification tablets or boiling (NPS camping guidance).
A filter is useful only if there is water to collect. Check the route and conditions, and carry enough water when sources are absent or uncertain. Filtering is one treatment option, not a reason to assume every source is safe without treatment.

2. Hands-free headlamp
A headlamp keeps both hands free for tasks such as setting up camp, repairing gear, preparing food or giving first aid after dark. The NPS includes a headlamp among its essentials and advises bringing extra batteries. For a longer trip, plan for the headlamp’s power needs with spare batteries or a suitable charging option.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Navigation backup
Think of navigation as a system, not one device. The NPS lists a map, compass and GPS system, advises knowing how to use them, and recommends carrying a physical map as a backup. REI also describes offline phone maps, dedicated GPS devices, and paper maps with a compass as options (REI’s Ten Essentials guide).
Download maps before leaving service, but do not make a phone or GPS unit your only plan for every route. Carry a map and compass when appropriate, and learn how to use them before the trip. A power bank can help keep a phone available for navigation, but it does not replace navigation skills or a backup.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

4. Satellite communicator or personal locator beacon for remote trips
If you’ll be somewhere without reliable cell service, consider a satellite communicator or PLB. A communicator can relay messages; a PLB sends an SOS signal. These devices are most relevant when the route is remote and help may take time to reach you. Neither guarantees rescue, so understand the device’s functions and limitations before relying on it.

How to choose what fits your trip
Adapt your kit to the location, weather and activity, rather than treating any short gadget list as right for every outing. REI recommends tailoring the Ten Essentials to those conditions, while the Rocky Mountain National Park backpacking checklist says to adjust gear for trip duration and safety needs.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Route and water: Check whether usable water sources are available; a filter cannot help where there is no water to collect.
- Remoteness: Consider cell coverage, distance from help and how long assistance could take when deciding whether to carry a satellite device.
- Trip length and power: Account for battery or fuel needs, charging options and how long you’ll be out.
- Weather and exposure: Choose equipment suited to expected conditions and the tasks you may need to perform.
- Weight and packed size: Balance useful capability against what you can comfortably carry.
- Familiarity: Practice using navigation, water-treatment and emergency devices before depending on them outdoors.
These four gadgets cover selected needs, not the whole preparedness plan. The Ten Essentials are systems; a balanced kit also addresses first aid, extra food and clothing, fire, shelter and repairs. As Doug Klingemann, Incident Commander for Routt County Search and Rescue in northwest Colorado, told REI, “The Ten Essentials remain relevant for everyone who recreates outside, but the specific items that you should bring depend on where you’re going and what you’re doing.”
