The right tool depends on which part of the job you need to handle. Canva is for creating original designs; Gumroad provides a general digital-product storefront; Teachable focuses on courses and related downloads; Shopify can sell digital products through a branded store and deliver files or supported hosted-content links. These tools serve different roles, so a creator may use a design tool alongside a sales platform.
How to choose a tool for digital products
“Digital product tool” can mean a design app, a storefront, a course platform, or a system for delivering files. Compare products by the job you need done rather than treating every option as a substitute for every other one.
- Product format: Decide whether you are making designs or templates, downloadable files, courses, memberships, coaching products, or software.
- Sales presence: Consider whether you want a hosted storefront, a way to embed sales on a site you already have, or a branded store.
- Delivery and access: Check how customers receive files or links and whether you need download controls.
- Cost and rights: Review subscriptions, transaction and payment-processing costs, and any licensing rules for assets used in a product.
The four tools below are organized by use case, not ranked by hands-on testing. Their official product information describes features, but it does not establish comparative performance.
Which tools fit which digital products?
| Tool | Best fit | What its official information describes | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva | Creating original designs and templates | Designing digital and physical products for sale | Commercial use must follow current licensing terms and product-specific restrictions. |
| Gumroad | A general storefront for downloads and other digital products | Downloads, ebooks, courses, memberships, software, license keys, and storefront or embedded selling | Fees differ by sales channel and can change. |
| Teachable | Education-centered products and audience relationships | Standalone downloads, or downloads bundled with courses, memberships, or coaching | Its documented positioning is broader creator education, not simply a low-cost general storefront. |
| Shopify Digital Products | Digital delivery through a branded Shopify store | Uploaded files or links from supported providers, with customer download controls | The app has no monthly fee beyond a Shopify plan, but plan and payment-processing charges still apply. |
Canva: make original designs and templates
Canva is relevant when your first need is creating a design, rather than hosting a storefront or managing course access. Its Help Center guidance says products offered for sale should be original designs and cautions against reselling individual elements or files as standalone downloads in ways that resemble clip art. Review the current Canva guidance on creating products for sale and applicable licensing terms before listing templates or design assets commercially. Access to an element does not by itself grant unrestricted resale rights.
#1 Best Overall
Gumroad: sell downloads, courses, and memberships
Gumroad’s feature information covers digital downloads, ebooks, courses, memberships, and software, including license-key generation. Sellers can use its storefront or embed payment and follow tools on an existing site, making it an option for creators who want a general digital-product sales setup. See Gumroad’s product features for the described formats and selling options.
At the time reflected in the official pricing information, direct sales were listed at 10% plus $0.50, while Discover sales were listed at 30%. These are channel-specific figures, not a single universal fee; check Gumroad’s current pricing page before deciding, because fees can change.
Teachable: pair downloads with teaching
Teachable is a better fit to consider when a download is part of an education business or a continuing relationship with learners. Its guide describes standalone downloads such as templates, guides, audio files, and spreadsheets, as well as downloads bundled with courses, memberships, or coaching. Its digital-download guide and product overview describe that broader creator and education focus.

Shopify’s free Digital Products app can deliver uploaded files or links from supported providers. The help page names videos, music, ebooks, and graphics as file examples, and lists hosted providers including Notion, Calendly, Acuity, Kajabi, Teachable, Thinkific, Google Drive and Docs, Dropbox, Canva, YouTube, Vimeo, and Figma. Uploaded files can be up to 5 GB; Shopify says there is no bandwidth limit for downloads and explains that sellers can limit customer downloads. See the Shopify Digital Products help page for delivery details.
The app itself adds no monthly charge beyond a Shopify plan, according to Shopify’s digital products overview. A Shopify plan and payment-processing charges still apply. Check current plan pricing and feature limits before choosing a setup.

Creation and selling are separate jobs. A designer might create an original template in Canva, then sell and deliver it through a storefront. An educator might sell a guide on its own or use it to complement a course, membership, or coaching offer. A seller who already wants a branded Shopify store can use its digital-products app for file or supported-link delivery.
