If your cordless drill slips while making a hole, drives screws too deeply, or struggles despite extra pressure, check its settings and technique before blaming the tool. The clutch, gear selector, and trigger do different jobs. Here are four common mistakes to avoid, with model-specific guidance where the details vary.

1. Using a screw-driving clutch setting to drill a hole

The numbered clutch limits torque while driving screws. When the fastener meets resistance, the clutch can slip to help prevent overdriving. For drilling, select the drill icon or drill mode if your tool has one; on the models covered by the guidance here, that mode bypasses the clutch.

Controls vary: a drill may have one collar for the clutch and another for mode selection, or combine functions differently. Identify the controls on your particular tool rather than assuming the numbered settings are drilling speeds. RYOBI Support Australia distinguishes standard drill mode for wood, metal, and plastic from hammer mode, which is for masonry and brick on drills equipped with that feature. Use hammer mode only when your drill has it and the manual specifies it for the material and bit: RYOBI Support Australia’s drill-mode guidance.

2. Choosing the wrong gear—or expecting speed to replace torque

The gear selector changes the tool’s speed and torque range; it is not the clutch. RYOBI’s general guidance for its drills assigns gear 1 to screwdriving and controlled drilling where higher torque is useful, and gear 2 to faster drilling in wood or metal. That is manufacturer guidance, not a rule that applies to every drill or task. Check your exact model’s manual and choose for the bit, material, and work required: RYOBI Support Australia’s gear guidance.

DEWALT 20V Max XR Drill Driver, Battery and Charger (DCD771C2)
  • Lightweight design fits into tight areas
  • High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
  • High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
  • 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control

Use the trigger to start and control speed, but do not assume that squeezing harder solves a mismatch between gear, bit, and task. For a screw, start slowly and let the tool and clutch do their jobs. For a hole, use the appropriate drill mode and gear specified for your model and material.

3. Starting too fast, misaligning the bit, or forcing a slowing drill

For screwdriving, seat the driver bit straight in the screw head and begin at low speed, increasing gradually. Starting crooked or too aggressively can make the bit slip or damage the screw head. Makita’s DDF482 instruction manual advises against excessive pressure: “Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed up the drilling.” It warns that excess force can damage the bit, reduce performance, and shorten tool life. Read the Makita DDF482 instruction manual for its operating and safety directions.

If the drill slows, ease off and reassess instead of pushing harder. Confirm you have the right mode and gear, a suitable sharp bit, and a secure workpiece. Hold the drill firmly, and take particular care as a bit breaks through the material, when the tool can react suddenly. Follow your own drill manual for workholding, protective equipment, and any material or accessory limits.

4. Driving a wood screw without a pilot hole when the material may split

A pilot hole can make a wood screw easier to drive and reduce the risk of splitting, especially near an edge or in material prone to cracking. The DDF482 manual recommends a pilot hole about two-thirds the screw diameter for its guidance. Treat that ratio as model-specific advice, not a universal rule for every wood, screw, or fastener. Consult the instructions for your drill and fastener, and choose a pilot-hole size suited to the material and screw.

How to set the clutch for a screw

  1. Choose the right mode. Select screwdriving mode and a suitable gear according to your drill manual.
  2. Start with a low clutch setting. The clutch numbers are not a standardized torque scale; the same number can behave differently on different models.
  3. Test on scrap or duplicate material. Drive a screw into the same material and adjust the clutch until the screw is set as desired. Increase the setting gradually if the clutch slips before the screw is seated.
  4. Keep the bit straight and use a controlled trigger. Start slowly, increase speed gradually, and stop when the clutch cuts in or the screw reaches the intended depth.

Makita recommends testing a screw in the actual material or a duplicate piece to find the needed torque. Pro Tool Reviews likewise advises starting low and increasing the clutch setting as needed, and notes that clutch numbers vary by model: Pro Tool Reviews’ explanation of drill clutch settings. Do not rely on a universal clutch number.

Quick checks before you drill or drive

  • Before making a hole: Select drill mode rather than a numbered screw-driving setting, if your drill has that option.
  • Before driving a screw: Choose screwdriving mode, start with a low clutch setting, and test on scrap or duplicate material.
  • Before changing a bit or adjusting the tool: Follow your manual’s battery-disconnection procedure. The DDF482 manual instructs users to remove the battery before adjustments, function checks, and work on the tool.
  • Before pulling the trigger: Secure the workpiece, fit a suitable bit, and hold the drill firmly. Follow your model’s manual for the applicable procedure and safety requirements.
