Four settings address the most common Android Auto annoyances: a crowded launcher, disappearing media or map controls, excessive message alerts, and the need to tap the screen while driving. Reorder or hide apps, turn on quick controls, mute noisy conversations, and use hands-free voice control. The exact menus and available features can vary by phone, vehicle, stereo, Android version, account, and region.
1. Hide and reorder the Android Auto launcher
Android Auto’s launcher is easier to use when the apps you need on a commute are at the top and apps you never use are out of sight. Google’s launcher documentation says users can hide apps and change the order in which apps appear.
Change the launcher from your phone
- Open Settings on the Android phone.
- Go to Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto.
- Tap Customize launcher.
- Hide unwanted apps or drag app names into the order you want.
- Exit Android Auto and restart it so the revised launcher appears in the car.
Put navigation, your preferred audio app, and any essential calling or messaging app where they are easiest to reach. Removing unused entries reduces the number of icons competing for attention, but it does not change which apps are installed on the phone.
2. Keep media and navigation controls visible
Android Auto can place one app in full-screen view while leaving the controls for another app less accessible. The Show quick controls for apps setting keeps media controls and navigation directions visible while another app is full screen, according to Android Auto Help.

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.
Turn on Show quick controls for apps
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Open the Android Auto settings page under Connected Devices and Connection Preferences.
- Enable Show quick controls for apps.
With the option enabled, checking the next navigation direction or pausing audio should require fewer trips back to the launcher or dashboard. This is a glance-time improvement rather than a performance boost: it keeps controls available, but the car’s display and software still determine exactly where they appear.
3. Quiet one conversation instead of silencing every message
Android Auto does not display every phone notification while you drive. Google says notifications shown in Android Auto are restricted to those considered important enough to appear in a driving situation and potentially interrupt the driver. Navigation, calls, messages, and reminders are among the driving-relevant categories.
Mute a noisy conversation
If one group chat or conversation produces too many heads-up alerts, use the conversation’s Mute option when it is presented in Android Auto or in the phone’s messaging notification controls. Muting that conversation keeps its messages available in Notification Center without presenting each one as a heads-up interruption. This is more selective than disabling message notifications altogether.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Messages can still be played and answered by voice. Use that option when you need to understand or respond to a message without reaching for the display, and wait until you are parked for anything that requires extended reading or composing.
4. Use hands-free voice control
Voice control reduces the need to browse the launcher or type while the vehicle is moving. Google is integrating Gemini into Android Auto to replace the classic Google Assistant experience on supported devices. The rollout is ongoing, so the available assistant, commands, and interface are not identical for every driver.
Start a voice command
- Say “Hey Google”, or press the compatible voice button on the steering wheel.
- Ask for a navigation destination, a text message, or music playback.
- Confirm the result by voice when Android Auto requests confirmation.
Gemini availability and capabilities can vary by Google account, phone, vehicle, region, and software version. If the car still presents the classic Assistant interface, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; the newer experience may not yet be enabled for that combination of devices.

How the four tweaks differ
| Tweak | Main problem addressed | Interaction change | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide and reorder launcher apps | Too many icons or repeated launcher searches | Fewer touch steps | Apps appear in a preferred order after Android Auto is restarted |
| Show quick controls for apps | Media or map controls disappear in full-screen view | Fewer trips to the launcher or dashboard | Controls and directions remain available while another app is full screen |
| Mute one conversation | Frequent message heads-up alerts | Heads-up interruption becomes Notification Center access | Only the selected conversation is quieted; other driving-relevant alerts can continue |
| Hands-free voice control | Typing or tapping for common tasks | Voice instead of touch | Commands depend on Assistant or Gemini rollout and device support |
Check compatibility before troubleshooting disconnections
Google says Android Auto works with more than 500 car models, but that figure is a changing compatibility claim rather than a guarantee for every phone-and-car combination. Google’s current requirements page should be checked for your specific vehicle, stereo, phone, and region.
- Wired connections: most require Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and a high-quality USB cable.
- Wireless connections: generally require Android 11.0 or higher, plus a compatible vehicle or supported aftermarket stereo and phone.
- Regional and vehicle limits: availability can differ by country, original-equipment manufacturer, device model, and software release.
A practical connection check
- Confirm that the phone meets the Android-version requirement for the connection type you are using.
- For wired Android Auto, replace a suspect lead with a high-quality USB cable for Android Auto and check that the cable and the car use compatible connectors.
- For wireless Android Auto, verify that both the phone and the vehicle or aftermarket stereo explicitly support wireless operation; wired support does not automatically imply wireless support.
- Check Google’s current vehicle and phone compatibility information because supported models, software requirements, and regional availability can change.
- After changing launcher settings, fully exit and restart Android Auto so the new configuration can load.
If a connection works only intermittently, record whether the failure occurs with wired or wireless use, with one particular cable or vehicle, or after a phone or vehicle software update. That distinction helps identify a compatibility or cable problem instead of treating every interruption as an app-setting problem.
What these settings cannot guarantee
These changes are designed to reduce avoidable visual and notification friction; they cannot make every drive interruption-free. Google’s documentation describes the settings and supported behavior, not a universal reduction in driver stress. Menu labels, notification behavior, wireless support, and Gemini features can change with Android, Android Auto, vehicle software, account status, and region. Configure the system while parked, and stop in a safe location before handling the phone or changing settings.
