Android Auto’s most useful driving features let you handle navigation, messages, calls, and media with voice controls or car buttons instead of reaching for your phone. They can reduce the need to touch the display, but they do not make driving risk-free: Google does not quantify a crash reduction, and a hands-free conversation can still distract.
1. Voice commands reduce the need to use the display
Voice control is the feature that makes several other Android Auto tasks easier to manage without tapping through menus. Google says you can start a voice interaction with a wake phrase, your steering-wheel voice-command button, or the microphone button on the car display. Voice commands can control navigation, calls, messages, and media. Google’s accessibility guide also describes Android Auto’s simplified interface, driving-optimized apps, and lockouts for some actions while the car is moving.
Voice recognition is not guaranteed to understand you. Google recommends waiting for the tone before speaking and reducing background noise if commands are not recognized. See Google’s voice-command troubleshooting steps.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Navigation gives directions, traffic, and lane guidance
With Google Maps or another supported navigation app, Android Auto can provide voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance. You can ask for a destination or traffic information by voice; Google gives examples such as “Take me home” and “Navigate to [location].” Typing a destination on the car display is restricted until the vehicle is in Park. Google’s navigation guide explains the available navigation features.

Availability depends on the navigation app and vehicle. For example, charging recommendations apply only to supported countries and EV models, not to every Android Auto user.
3. Messages can be read aloud and dictated
Compatible messaging apps can send and receive messages through Android Auto. You can ask the assistant to read a message aloud, then dictate a reply. Google says the assistant repeats the dictated message and asks you to confirm before sending it. Some actions, including typing messages while the vehicle is moving, are locked out. Details are in Google’s guide to sending and receiving messages.

That confirmation step gives you a chance to catch a misheard name or phrase, but it still takes attention to compose and review a reply. If the exchange needs more than a short response, wait until you are parked.

Android Auto can place and receive calls through the car speakers. You can start a call by voice, and some vehicles let you answer using a steering-wheel button. The exact controls vary by vehicle; check the car’s manual or manufacturer’s guidance if a button does not work. Google’s calling guide covers calls in Android Auto.

Using the car’s speakers avoids holding the phone, but it does not remove the mental demands of a conversation. Keep calls brief and postpone them if traffic, weather, or road conditions require your full attention.

Android Auto needs a compatible phone and car or stereo. For wired use, Google lists a phone running Android 9.0 or higher, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Match the cable connector to your phone and the port in your vehicle; a cable is not needed for wireless projection.
