Four focused prints—a first-layer patch, temperature tower, retraction test, and Benchy or bridge test—can help narrow down common FDM print-quality problems. They show symptoms, not certain diagnoses: use the result as a clue, consider the filament and slicer settings, and change one likely cause at a time.

Which test should you print first?

Test Best for checking What to inspect Likely next check
First-layer patch Adhesion and consistency across the bed Whether lines join cleanly, stay attached, and look consistent across the patch Bed cleanliness, leveling or mesh, and nozzle-to-bed distance
Temperature tower How temperature affects the chosen filament Stringing, surface appearance, bridging, and layer bonding at each temperature Choose a usable temperature range for that filament; follow the model’s instructions
Retraction or stringing test Fine strands between separated features How much stringing appears between posts or other separated shapes Check retraction, nozzle temperature, and whether the filament may be damp
3DBenchy or focused bridge/overhang test Several print-quality issues, or cooling-related behavior in isolation Overhangs and bridges, hull ripples or warping, small details, and base lifting For drooping, investigate cooling and print conditions; for lifting, check adhesion and warping

These tests are useful because each makes a particular feature easier to inspect. A Benchy combines multiple challenges, while a focused bridge or overhang test is more useful when you want to isolate those features. There is no standardized scoring rubric that makes results directly comparable across all four tests.

What a first-layer patch reveals

A first-layer patch shows whether extrusion lines make clean contact with the bed and whether that contact is consistent across the build area. If lines fail to join or detach, start with the bed surface and nozzle-to-bed relationship rather than changing unrelated print settings. When one side of the patch looks different from another, inspect cleanliness and bed leveling or mesh as well as nozzle distance.

These are troubleshooting starting points, not proof of a single cause. Prusa’s Print Quality Troubleshooting treats first-layer behavior as a distinct print-quality issue; QIDI also recommends checking bed level and surface cleanliness when a Benchy lifts.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to read a temperature tower

A temperature tower prints sections at different temperatures so you can compare how one filament behaves across controlled steps. Look at stringing, surface finish, bridging, and layer bonding together: a temperature that improves one feature may not be acceptable if bonding or another visible quality suffers.

Use a range appropriate to the specific filament and follow the tower model’s intended instructions. Do not treat the result as universal for another material or printer setup. Calibration guidance from 3D-Lithophane.com emphasizes matching the test’s layer height, speed, and filament to the work you intend to print.

Why prints get stringy

Fine strands between separated posts make a retraction or stringing test easier to interpret than a model with few travel moves. Stringing can involve retraction settings, nozzle temperature, or filament moisture; strands alone do not identify which one is responsible. QIDI lists these as troubleshooting considerations.

Change one variable at a time and compare the next print with the previous one. Keep the temperature that still gives acceptable layer bonding and surface quality instead of lowering it solely to suppress strings.

What a Benchy can—and cannot—tell you

A 3DBenchy brings several demanding geometries into one small model. Inspect bridges and overhangs for drooping, the hull for ripples or warping, small details for print quality, and the base for lifting. QIDI’s guide to printing and interpreting the 3DBenchy describes drooping on bridges or overhangs as a possible cooling-related clue and ripples after corners as possible ringing.

Because the model combines features, a poor result is a clue rather than a verdict on the whole printer. If the question is specifically whether bridges or overhangs are printing well, use a focused test to reduce the number of variables you are interpreting at once.

Match the test to the print you care about

Test with the filament and settings relevant to the intended work. Layer height, speed, cooling, temperature, and retraction can all affect the result, so a test made with different settings may not answer the question you actually have. Change one likely cause at a time and record the settings and visible result for each print; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which adjustment helped.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an unfamiliar symptom, begin with the test that makes that symptom easiest to see: a patch for bed contact, a tower for temperature-dependent behavior, a stringing test for travel strands, or a focused bridge/overhang print for those features. Use a Benchy when seeing several behaviors together is more useful than isolating one.
