3G is a mobile network technology that connects a device through a cellular operator. Wi-Fi is a local wireless network technology that connects a device to an access point or router. Either can provide a route to the internet, but Wi-Fi alone does not mean the internet is working.
What does 3G mean?
3G means third-generation mobile telecommunications. It is associated with the International Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2000 family of standards, which supports mobile voice, data, internet and multimedia services. The ITU’s background on IMT-2000 describes it as the basis for third-generation wireless systems.
With 3G, a phone or other compatible device communicates over radio with a cellular network operated by a mobile carrier. The carrier’s network provides the wide-area connection; service depends on the country, carrier and network availability where the device is being used.

Wi-Fi is a family of wireless local-area networking technologies based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. It lets devices exchange data over radio instead of using a physical network cable. IEEE’s description of the 802.11 family identifies the standards behind Wi-Fi.

In a typical home or office network, a device connects wirelessly to an access point, often built into a router. That access point may connect onward to an Ethernet network and an internet service. IEEE’s Wi-Fi overview describes this access-point arrangement.
How are 3G and Wi-Fi different?

They are not competing names for the same technology. A device can use 3G when away from a Wi-Fi network, use Wi-Fi when connected to a local access point, or support both and switch between them. The route to the internet differs: 3G goes through a mobile operator, while Wi-Fi is the local wireless link and may then rely on a separate internet connection.

Why can Wi-Fi be connected but the internet still not work?
A Wi-Fi connection confirms that the device has joined the local wireless network; it does not prove that the router or access point has a functioning connection to the internet. The failure may be beyond the device’s Wi-Fi link—for example, in the router’s upstream connection or the internet service itself.
This is why “connected to Wi-Fi” and “connected to the internet” are not interchangeable. A local network can also be useful without internet access, such as when devices communicate with one another over the same network.

Are labels such as 3.5G formal standards?
Not necessarily. The ITU notes that labels such as 2.5G, 3.5G and 3.9G are not formal standard designations. The term 3G is commonly used for technologies and services associated with IMT-2000; fractional-generation labels may be marketing descriptions rather than official generation names. The ITU’s IMT-2000 overview explains the distinction.

There is no reliable universal speed ranking from the labels alone. Performance depends on the particular 3G system or Wi-Fi generation, signal strength, network congestion and the connection beyond the radio link. The practical distinction is the network each technology uses, not a guaranteed speed.
