A 3D virtual world is a computer-generated environment arranged in three dimensions, where people can explore digital spaces and objects and may interact with others in real time. Many online worlds are persistent, meaning that the environment or its state continues between visits, but persistence is common rather than a universal requirement. You do not need a VR headset: virtual reality is one way to experience digital content, while a virtual world is the environment itself.
What makes a virtual world 3D?
In a 3D virtual world, spaces and objects are represented with depth as well as height and width. Users can move through or around them, often through an avatar or another on-screen viewpoint. The term describes a computer-generated spatial environment, not a particular device or genre of software.
A technical definition in ITU-T Recommendation Y.4239, issued in November 2025, citing ISO/IEC 18039, describes a virtual world as the “spatial organization of multiple virtual objects, potentially including global behaviour.” That terminology comes from a recommendation about digital twins and the metaverse; it is a precise technical framing, not the only everyday definition.

Depending on the world, people may socialize, work, learn, play, create, or make transactions. Some environments are designed mainly for a single user, while social online worlds bring multiple participants together to interact with one another and with simulated objects. A 2013 review by Dionisio, Burns, and Gilbert describes virtual worlds as persistent online computer-generated environments in which people in different locations interact in real time for work or play.

The European Commission’s FAQ on virtual worlds uses a broad public-facing definition: “persistent, 3D, real-time, immersive environments,” with uses including socializing, working, learning, transactions, playing, and creating. This is a useful summary of common features, but definitions vary by context: some emphasize how the environment is structured, while others foreground persistence, immersion, or what people do there.
Are persistence and real-time interaction required?
They are common features of social or online virtual worlds, but they are not part of every definition. Persistence means that a world, or some of its state, remains after an individual user leaves. Real-time interaction means participants can respond to one another as events happen, rather than only exchanging content asynchronously.

These characteristics help distinguish many shared online worlds from a one-off 3D scene or a single-player experience, but no single checklist governs every use of the term. When evaluating a particular environment, consider whether its spaces persist, how many people can participate together, and what interaction or creation tools it provides.

Is a virtual world the same as virtual reality?
No. A virtual world is a digital environment; virtual reality (VR) is an immersive way of experiencing digital content, commonly using a head-mounted display. A 3D world may be accessible through a headset, a computer screen, or other interfaces. IEEE’s overview describes shared virtual environments where avatar-represented users interact in real time, often through immersive interfaces such as head-mounted displays. “Often” does not mean “always”: a headset is optional, not part of the definition.

Is a metaverse the same as a virtual world?
Not necessarily. The terms overlap, and institutions frame “metaverse” differently. The European Commission describes a metaverse as an interoperable network of virtual worlds. In contrast, ITU-T Recommendation Y.4239 defines it as “a collective virtual environment where physical and virtual worlds converge” and users interact with shared digital spaces, objects, and services.
IEEE Standards Association material also uses a broader frame for metaverse experiences: they may involve a virtual-reality universe, an augmented-reality extension of the physical world, or a digital counterpart such as a digital twin. It presents persistence as an expectation and includes “Persistent Virtual Reality” as a narrower framing. Because these usages are not identical, it is clearest to explain what a source or speaker means rather than treat “metaverse” as a universally settled synonym for “virtual world.”

- Adjustable Knuckle Straps: knuckle straps make it possible to relax your hands without dropping the controllers. High-quality PU material offers extra durability and velcro design makes it easy to adjust the strap length to different needs.
- Persistence: Does the environment or its state continue when you leave?
- Shared participation: Can other people join at the same time, and how many can participate together?
- Interaction and creation: Can users communicate, manipulate objects, or make content?
- Access mode: Is it available on a screen, through VR, through augmented reality (AR), or in more than one way?
- Interoperability: Can people, objects, or services move between it and other worlds? This is especially relevant when someone uses the European Commission’s network-of-worlds meaning of “metaverse.”
