For FDM/FFF 3D prints, five useful troubleshooting categories are first-layer adhesion, warping, stringing, under-extrusion, and layer shifting. Start with simple checks—cleanliness, filament feed, and the slicer profile—then change one likely cause at a time and verify the result with a small test print. The right settings depend on your printer, filament, nozzle, slicer, and surroundings, so use the profile and instructions intended for your equipment rather than copying universal numbers.
Start with a safe troubleshooting sequence

Note what the defect looks like and when it begins. Inspect the first layer as well as the affected area of the finished or interrupted print.

Check the basics: clean the build plate and nozzle, confirm filament feeds freely, select the correct printer and material profile in the slicer, and verify that bed leveling or mesh compensation is working.

Choose the most plausible cause for the symptom and change one factor at a time. QIDI Tech’s 3D Printing Troubleshooting Guide: Common Problems, Causes, and Fixes, dated February 24, 2024 and displaying the byline ChloeAustin, advises: “Make only one change at a time.”

Use a small test print to see whether the change helped. If a problem continues or points to damaged hardware, use the printer maker’s support procedure instead of changing unrelated slicer settings.
These are common troubleshooting categories, not a measured ranking of print failures. Manufacturer and specialist guides describe likely causes and checks, but they do not establish a single setting or fix that works for every printer and material.
Why won’t my 3D print stick to the bed?
A print that releases early or starts with uneven lines may have a dirty build plate, an unsuitable first-layer speed, a bed-leveling or mesh problem, or an incorrect Z-offset. Clean the plate first, then inspect how the first-layer lines meet and check leveling or mesh before making small Z-offset adjustments. Slowing the first layer may help.

Nozzle too high: Lines can look round, remain separate, or fail to adhere.

Nozzle too low: Excessive compression can create ridges, scraping, or restricted flow.
A well-set first layer has lines that meet and are slightly flattened. Avoid trying to solve adhesion by crushing the layer; excessive compression can create a different extrusion problem. Prusa’s first-layer troubleshooting guide and QIDI’s troubleshooting guide discuss these checks.

Why are the corners lifting or the print warping?
Warping occurs when cooling and contraction are uneven. Some materials shrink more than others, and large, flat parts can be especially vulnerable. Begin with a clean plate and a sound first layer. If those are in order, control drafts or inappropriate cooling and consider a brim to increase the part’s contact area with the build plate.

Use the printer and filament maker’s recommendations for bed and nozzle temperatures; there is no temperature that is right for every material and machine. A raised, warped area can also collide with the nozzle and contribute to a later layer shift, so check for warping when diagnosing a shift. Why are there fine strings between parts?
Stringing, or oozing, can be related to nozzle temperature, retraction settings, or damp filament. Check that the slicer profile matches the printer and material, and consider filament moisture as one possibility—not a diagnosis based on strings alone. Change one setting at a time and use a small test print to compare the result.

If other signs point to moisture, such as inconsistent extrusion or popping sounds, check the filament maker’s drying recommendations for that material. QIDI’s filament-drying guide says nylon can absorb up to 10% of its weight in water in a humid environment; this is a vendor-published figure, not an independently validated rate for every nylon or environment. Drying temperatures and times depend on the filament, so follow its maker’s instructions. A dryer is relevant only when moisture is plausible; it will not fix a dirty bed, a clog, incorrect retraction, or loose motion hardware.

These defects can indicate under-extrusion: too little filament is reaching the print. Possible causes include a partial nozzle clog, low print temperature, tangled or resistant filament, worn extruder gears, flow settings, or a print speed the hotend cannot sustain. Missing material can leave a part weak or fragile.
Check the filament path and nozzle before changing flow or making calibration adjustments. Confirm the material and printer profile, then investigate other likely causes one at a time. QIDI’s troubleshooting guide and Prusa’s under-extrusion guide cover these possibilities.

Why did the layers shift sideways?
A layer shift is a positional misalignment, commonly involving abnormal X- or Y-axis movement. Check the axis path for obstructions, then inspect belts and pulleys using the procedure for your printer. Speed, skipped steps, nozzle collisions, and a warped part can also contribute.
Belt-adjustment procedures and recommended values are model-specific. Prusa’s layer-shifting guide includes procedures for its own machines; follow the instructions for your printer rather than transferring a measurement or adjustment to a different model.
