3D-printing materials are the feedstocks a printer shapes or solidifies to build an object from a digital design. They include polymers, metals, ceramics, and advanced materials—not just plastic filament. The right feedstock depends on the printer’s process and its specific material requirements.
What are 3D printing materials?
They are the substances supplied to an additive-manufacturing machine and formed into a part. The machine builds the object by adding material in successive layers, rather than removing material from a larger block or shaping it in a mold. NIST describes additive manufacturing as building parts layer by layer in its Additive Manufacturing FAQs.
“3D printing” is commonly used to mean additive manufacturing, though NIST notes that it is one of several approaches within that broader field. In either usage, the material is the input—not the finished printed object.

Broad material families include polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites or other advanced materials. NIST’s materials research overview covers these areas. The family name alone does not tell you how a material enters the printer: feedstock form varies with the process.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
| Material family | Common feedstock forms | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Polymers and plastics | Filament, powder, or liquid photopolymer resin | Polymer is a broad category; filament is only one form. |
| Metals | Powder or wire | Different processes use different forms; powder bed fusion is one example using metal powder. |
| Ceramics | Powder, slurry, or another process-specific feedstock | There is no single feedstock form used by every ceramic-printing process. |
| Composites and advanced materials | Depends on the formulation and process | Composition and reinforcement matter when assessing a specific material. |
These are broad categories, not a complete taxonomy. A material may combine a base substance with fillers or reinforcement, so “material” can refer either to its chemical family or to the physical form supplied to the printer.
How does the printing process determine the material?
A printer’s process dictates how feedstock is deposited, cured, joined, or fused. NIST’s overview of additive-manufacturing technologies includes the process families below.

- Material extrusion: Material passes through a nozzle and is deposited layer by layer. Polymer filament is a familiar feedstock for personal printers, but extrusion is not limited to one material or printer category. See NIST’s material extrusion overview.
- Vat photopolymerization: Liquid photopolymer resin is selectively cured, commonly with ultraviolet light, to form the part.
- Powder bed fusion: A heat source, such as a laser or electron beam, selectively melts or fuses powder. NIST describes metal powder as an example in its powder bed fusion overview.
- Directed energy deposition: Material is delivered to a target and melted by a directed energy source; powder is one possible feedstock.
- Binder jetting: A binder joins powder. NIST notes that this process can produce builds using metal, polymer, or ceramic materials.
- Material jetting: Droplets of material are deposited and then cured to create a solid structure.
Are filament, resin, and powder interchangeable?
No. They are different feedstock forms used by different processes, not universal alternatives that any 3D printer can accept. Filament is associated with material extrusion, liquid photopolymer resin with vat photopolymerization, and powder with processes such as powder bed fusion or binder jetting. Metal may also be supplied as wire for some processes.
Even when two printers use the same broad process, a material is not automatically compatible with both. Check the printer’s supported process, manufacturer material specifications, and any machine-specific requirements before choosing feedstock. Without a printer model and its specifications, a general materials list cannot establish compatibility.

How should you choose a material?
- Identify the printer’s process. Determine whether it uses extrusion, vat photopolymerization, powder bed fusion, or another method.
- Match the feedstock form. Check whether the machine is designed for filament, liquid resin, powder, wire, or another specified form.
- Check the exact printer requirements. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility and material specifications; a generic label such as “polymer” or “metal” is not enough.
- Define what the finished part needs to do. Strength, heat resistance, safety, cost, and other performance considerations depend on the particular material, process, and application. The broad categories alone do not establish how a specific printed part will perform.
There is no universal best 3D-printing material. The suitable choice is the one supported by the printer and appropriate for the part’s intended use.

For a standards-oriented description, ISO/ASTM terminology treats additive manufacturing as building physical 3D geometries through successive addition of material. ASTM’s terminology listing identifies the scope and edition information for that standard; check the listing for current status if the edition matters to your work.
