A 3D printer can help turn a craft idea into a physical object: a custom decoration, a reusable template, an organizer, a small tool, or a part for a model. It is not a requirement for every maker, but a desktop filament printer can be a useful addition if you want to create objects that are difficult to make by hand or repeat consistently.

What a 3D printer adds to arts and crafts

A 3D printer builds an object from a digital model, usually by making it one layer at a time. You can find a model online or create your own, prepare it in software for the printer, and then print it in a compatible material. The printed piece can be used as-is, finished by hand, painted, or combined with paper, fabric, wood, beads, and other craft materials.

That makes the printer a tool within a larger creative process, rather than a replacement for craft skills. You still decide what to make, adjust the design, choose a material and color, and work out how the printed part fits into the finished project.

  • Decorations: Make custom shapes, lettering, or ornaments sized for a particular project.
  • Templates and tools: Print a guide, stencil, spacer, or small helper tool for repeatable handwork.
  • Organizers: Design storage inserts or holders around the supplies you already use.
  • Models and prototypes: Create miniature parts, props, or jewelry prototypes to refine before making a final piece.

These are examples of possible projects, not guaranteed results: the outcome depends on the design, printer, material, and finishing work.

Which type of printer suits a craft hobby?

For many general-purpose craft projects, a desktop FDM/FFF printer is a practical starting point. It feeds thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle and deposits it layer by layer. Formlabs’ guide for hobbyists identifies FDM/FFF and PLA as a reasonable starting path. Check a specific printer’s supported materials and workflow before buying filament or planning a project.

A resin printer is another option when small-scale detail is the priority, such as for miniatures or jewelry prototypes. Its workflow is more involved: resin is a liquid chemical, and the process brings ventilation, protective equipment, washing, and other post-processing considerations. Prusa’s printer-selection guide describes these added handling and safety demands.

Consideration FDM/FFF Resin
Typical craft fit Flexible general-purpose projects, such as decorations, organizers, templates, and model components. Small objects where fine detail matters, such as miniatures or jewelry prototypes.
How it makes an object Heated nozzle deposits thermoplastic filament in layers. Uses liquid resin; the cited selection guidance emphasizes washing and post-processing.
Material and handling Use a filament supported by the printer; PLA is a suggested starting material for hobbyists. Requires attention to liquid-chemical handling, ventilation, and protective gear.
Other choice factors Confirm the printer’s supported materials, print volume, and setup workflow for the objects you plan to make. Consider the extra handling and finishing workflow alongside the detail you want.

Neither method is automatically right for every project. Consider the object’s scale and desired detail, intended use and material compatibility, available print volume, and how much setup and post-processing you are prepared to do.

A simple craft-project workflow

  1. Choose the project. Start with a specific object or a problem in an existing craft routine, such as needing a custom-sized organizer or a repeatable template.
  2. Find or create a model. Use a digital design that fits the project, or make one yourself in suitable modeling software.
  3. Prepare the print. Use the printer’s compatible preparation workflow to orient and configure the model before printing.
  4. Match the material to the printer and project. For a general hobbyist starting with FDM/FFF, PLA is one suggested option; verify printer compatibility and consider how the object will be used.
  5. Print and finish. After printing, remove or refine the piece as appropriate, then paint it or combine it with other craft materials. Resin projects also involve washing and post-processing.

MakerBot’s educator guide presents 3D-printing projects in art, history, and music, while Formlabs describes creative work in art, design, and jewelry. These examples illustrate the range of ways digital fabrication can fit into creative work; they do not mean every project is easier or better when printed.

Safety is part of choosing a printer

NIOSH guidance for makerspaces, schools, libraries, and small businesses discusses potential exposure to ultrafine particles and chemicals, as well as other safety hazards. The precautions that make sense depend on the printer technology, material, and environment. Review the safety instructions for the specific printer and material, and plan for appropriate ventilation and handling rather than assuming that a desktop machine or a particular filament is universally safe or fume-free.

Resin deserves particular care because it involves liquid chemicals and, according to Prusa’s selection guidance, ventilation, protective gear, and washing or other post-processing. If that workflow is not appropriate for your workspace, a filament printer may be a more manageable craft option.

When a 3D printer may not be worth adding

If your projects do not call for custom shapes, repeatable templates, or small modeled components, a printer may add setup and finishing work without solving a real problem. It also requires learning a digital workflow and choosing materials that suit both the machine and the intended object. Start with a project you genuinely want to make, then decide whether printing is a useful way to make it.
