A 3D-printed mobile soldering station can combine an iron controller and an adjustable DC output in one enclosure, but those are separate electrical jobs. A documented Makita-battery build pairs a clone T12 controller with a buck-converter supply; AxxSolder is a different design for specified JBC cartridges, with DC or USB-C PD input. Choose by iron compatibility, input capability, continuous auxiliary-output demand, heat management, battery protection, and the controller’s grounding requirements—not by enclosure shape or a converter’s advertised peak rating alone.

What a combined mobile station actually contains

The soldering subsystem regulates power to a compatible iron or cartridge. The auxiliary supply subsystem converts input power into an adjustable DC output for other equipment. Putting both in one printed case does not make their ratings interchangeable: the iron has its own controller and power demand, while the auxiliary output has its own voltage, current, and thermal limits.

That distinction matters when choosing an architecture. A T12 build with a separate buck converter is not electrically or mechanically equivalent to a cartridge controller that also accepts USB-C Power Delivery. Start with the iron and input source you intend to use, then determine whether the added bench output can meet your actual load continuously.

Makita battery enclosure by 3D_Printing_Athens (2020) Clone Hakko T12 iron and controller Designed around a Makita 14.4 V battery adapter Creator describes an adjustable 0–15 V output, up to 3 A, from a DC-DC buck converter Separate switches for the iron and supply; input-voltage monitoring; banana binding posts and 18 AWG silicone power wire are listed. The creator cautions that sustained draw above 3 A can overheat the cited supply module.
AxxSolder portable controller JBC C115, C210, and C245 cartridge families; compatible handles include NT115, T210, and T245 as documented by the project 9–24 V DC or USB-C PD; iron output is limited to the negotiated USB-PD source capability The project is an iron controller, not the separate adjustable auxiliary-supply arrangement described in the Makita build STM32-based design with display and sleep features; portable and station enclosures are available. Custom controller hardware and firmware add complexity.
Combined T12 enclosure listing by fabricate3d (May 2026) T12 station Intended for a 6S 18650 pack Enclosure is intended for DC-DC boost and buck modules, display, and banana outputs The listing excerpt calls for a BMS and fuse and recommends PETG. The host page was not accessible, so verify the actual files, component requirements, and electrical details before relying on those claims.

The Makita project’s 0–15 V and up-to-3 A figures describe that creator’s configuration, not every buck converter or battery adapter. Likewise, the newer enclosure listing is evidence of a proposed layout, not a verified circuit design.

How to choose the iron controller and input source

Choose by cartridge or handle compatibility

AxxSolder supports specified JBC C115, C210, and C245 cartridge families. It is not a universal controller for arbitrary soldering irons. Its documentation warns that incorrect handle detection can produce the wrong temperature calibration and maximum power, potentially damaging a cartridge. Confirm the exact handle, connector, and identification wiring against the controller documentation before powering it.

A T12 setup follows a different compatibility path: use a T12 controller and iron intended to work together, then check how that controller is powered from the chosen battery or DC source. The Makita project documents one clone-T12 implementation; it does not establish compatibility with every T12 controller or Makita battery adapter.

Match the input to the controller and required output

  • Tool battery: A tool-battery adapter can make a build portable, but the controller and converter must be suitable for the pack voltage and its operating behavior. Do not infer a battery’s safe current capability from a printed enclosure.
  • Protected battery pack: A custom pack adds requirements for cell configuration, battery-management protection, fusing, wiring, charging, and enclosure heat management. The May 2026 enclosure listing mentions a 6S 18650 pack, BMS, and fuse, but its inaccessible host page means those statements need verification against the actual design and components.
  • DC supply: AxxSolder documents 9–24 V DC input and recommends the Meanwell LRS-150-24 for full power, describing it as 156 W at 24 V. That recommendation is for the project’s controller setup; it should not be treated as a battery-pack recommendation.
  • USB-C PD: AxxSolder accepts USB-C PD and automatically limits iron output to the negotiated source capability. Its documentation gives a 65 W, 20 V PD source as an example: NT115 and T210 can run at full power, while T245 is power-limited. Those results apply to the project’s stated example, not to every charger or controller.

Size the auxiliary DC output for sustained use

Decide what voltage and current the equipment connected to the banana posts or other output will actually need. Check the converter’s continuous rating, input range, cooling requirements, and protection behavior for the exact module and installation. A peak or headline rating alone does not establish that a small converter can supply that load for an extended period inside a compact printed case.

The Makita build’s creator reports an output of up to 3 A and warns against drawing more than 3 A for a long time because the cited supply may overheat. Treat that as a limitation reported for that configuration—not a universal rating or a substitute for checking the selected converter’s specifications and temperature limits.

Helping hands can assist you in fixating components from different directions. Magnifying glass with LED lights helps you with more micro soldering work by enlarging components and providing sufficient light. Use solder wire dispenser and tip storage slots to store your solder wire and soldering tips, making your workbench well-organized.
  • Please note that WEP 927-IV model uses WEP #1400 Soldering Iron Tips, which are available in our store. This soldering iron kit is covered by our exclusive 1-year USA technical support, with 24-hour assistance from our dedicated team. Note: This product is rated for 110-127V USA specifications. Do not connect this iron to a 220V power socket.

Keep the iron and auxiliary output demands separate in your power budget. The input source must support the combined load, and each subsystem’s wiring, connectors, switching, and thermal path must suit its own current. If the desired auxiliary load exceeds the module’s verified continuous capability, choose a different converter or reduce the expected load rather than relying on a short-duration peak figure.

Plan grounding and electrical protection before printing

Follow the selected controller’s grounding instructions

AxxSolder gives design-specific guidance for its grounded-tip arrangement: it calls for a floating SELV supply and warns against a supply whose DC output is referenced to mains earth. The project also cautions that a USB-C charger shell may be connected to earth. These instructions concern AxxSolder’s arrangement; do not transfer them to a T12 controller or another design without checking that design’s documentation.

Protect batteries and wiring

  • Use battery protection and an appropriately selected fuse when the specific pack design calls for them; a printed case is not electrical protection.
  • Check the ratings of wire, connectors, switches, terminals, and adapters against the currents they will carry. The Makita project lists 18 AWG silicone power wire, but that does not establish suitability for another build or load.
  • Provide ventilation and a thermal path for converters and controllers. Compacting both subsystems in one case can concentrate heat.
  • Keep the hot iron tip secured in a suitable rest when not in use, and place the rest so it cannot heat or damage the printed enclosure.

Choose a practical build path

  1. Pick the iron first. Decide whether you need a T12 platform or one of AxxSolder’s supported JBC cartridge families. Confirm the exact controller, handle, connector, and identification wiring.
  2. Choose the input source. Use a compatible tool battery, protected pack, DC supply, or USB-C PD source. Confirm its voltage and available power under the controller’s documented limits.
  3. Decide whether you need a separate adjustable output. If so, specify its required voltage range and sustained current independently from the iron’s needs.
  4. Verify the full power budget. Check the input source and each converter’s continuous capability, wiring and connector ratings, and heat dissipation for the expected combined use.
  5. Resolve protection and grounding. Follow the exact controller and battery instructions for fusing, battery management, and grounding before wiring or testing.
  6. Design the enclosure around the hardware. Allow space for ventilation, connectors, controls, battery access, and a safe iron rest. The May 2026 listing recommends PETG over PLA for heat resistance, but verify the material and clearances against the components and temperatures in your own design.
