Three-dimensional data visualization is advancing along three connected paths: more interoperable web delivery, closer attention to fidelity in industrial digital twins, and interactive or immersive analysis for complex scientific and industrial data. None guarantees better insight on its own. The right choice depends on what people need to understand, how the data is produced and updated, and whether spatial context helps with the task.

What are the current trends in 3D data visualization?

Web-ready 3D assets and interoperability

Browser-based visualization depends not only on what a model looks like, but also on whether assets can be transmitted efficiently and exchanged across tools. NIST describes glTF as straightforward and efficient to transmit, making it suitable for web-based applications. NIST also participates in standards activity involving glTF, OpenXR, and ANARI. These standards and formats can support more portable workflows, but their existence does not guarantee that every application will import an asset unchanged or support the same capabilities. NIST’s visualization standards overview describes this work.

Fidelity as a digital-twin concern

In industrial digital twins, visualization fidelity is part of a broader question: how accurately does the digital representation correspond to the physical system, and what level of detail is appropriate for the intended use? ISO/TR 24464:2025 examines industrial digital-twin architecture, the interface between a physical twin and its digital counterpart, and visualization fidelity. Its topics include big-data visualization, component technologies, model level of detail for plant equipment, and fidelity measurement. It is a technical report, not a deployment recipe or a prescriptive implementation standard. The ISO catalog entry for ISO/TR 24464:2025 identifies it as the second edition, published in March 2025.

Interactive and immersive analysis

Research on industrial and scientific visualization includes interactive visual analytics and immersive interfaces for complex datasets, including digital-twin applications. A 2025 review surveys these approaches and provides examples; it does not establish that immersive visualization is superior to a desktop view for every dataset or audience. Immersion is most worth evaluating when users need to reason about spatial relationships, scale, or shared exploration. The 2025 review of industrial big-data visualization surveys the field, but its examples should be treated as directions to assess rather than proof of universal benefit.

What makes a 3D digital twin different from a 3D model?

A rendered model can show an object or environment in three dimensions without being a digital twin. IEEE’s Digital Twins of the Earth project description defines a twin in relation to a physical system: it is dynamically updated with data from that physical twin, has predictive capability, and informs decisions. In short, a digital twin involves an ongoing connection and a decision purpose, not just a visual resemblance. IEEE’s P3501 project also foregrounds engineering practices, interfaces, data and service models, and interoperability for Earth-system twins. That context is distinct from industrial digital-twin work; the two should not be assumed to share one universal architecture. See IEEE SA’s P3501 project description.

Why integration and reuse remain important

Digital-twin projects can require expertise across multiple disciplines and connections among data, models, software, and operational systems. NIST’s October 2024 publication on digital twins in advanced manufacturing describes the field as early in adoption and identifies customized, ad hoc implementations as difficult to integrate and reuse. A visually convincing one-off build may still be a poor foundation if it cannot exchange information with existing systems or adapt to future needs. NIST’s discussion of standards and implementation challenges for digital twins in advanced manufacturing explains why shared approaches matter.

How to compare 3D visualization approaches

Compare candidates against the work users need to do rather than treating “3D” as a benefit by itself. These criteria synthesize issues raised in standards and review literature; they are not a published benchmark.

  • Task and data: Is the goal exploration, monitoring, communication, simulation, or decision support? Does the analysis rely on spatial context or relationships that a 3D view can make clearer?
  • Scale and fidelity: What level of model detail is necessary for the task? For an industrial twin, what must remain consistent across the physical-to-digital interface? ISO/TR 24464:2025 addresses fidelity and model detail as technical concerns.
  • Interoperability and delivery: Which formats and systems need to exchange data? Must the visualization run in a browser or move among 3D tools? NIST’s description of glTF addresses efficient transmission, not guaranteed compatibility across all systems.
  • Interaction mode: Would direct manipulation or immersive spatial context help the intended users? Evaluate this with the actual audience and task; survey examples do not prove a universal advantage.
  • Integration and reuse: Can the implementation connect to existing systems and reuse data or components, or does it depend on a custom build? NIST identifies integration and reuse as practical challenges for digital-twin implementations.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The cited standards, technical publications, and review literature describe technical priorities and active research directions. They do not establish universal adoption of 3D visualization or show that it consistently improves comprehension, productivity, or decisions. No topic-specific adoption or insight-improvement statistic is established by these sources. ISO/TR 24464:2025 is 47 pages, a bibliographic detail rather than a performance measure. Treat claims about benefits as questions to test for the particular data, workflow, and audience.
