While moving house, Andrea wanted to understand the layout of his new home more clearly than ordinary photos allowed. That practical frustration led him to build a simple tool that connected 360° panoramas into an interactive virtual tour—and, after other people began using it, into a much broader product.
The problem was seeing how a new home fit together
Andrea’s starting point was personal, not a plan to build a software business. He was moving and wanted a more immersive way to visualize the new space. As he put it, “Regular photos weren’t enough.” A collection of still images could show individual views, but did not give him the spatial understanding he wanted.
His first response was to build a tool for himself: “I created a simple tool to connect 360° panoramas and turn them into an interactive virtual tour.” The original idea was deliberately narrow—bring panoramic images together so someone could explore a place rather than just look at disconnected photos.
Other people turned a personal tool into a product
Andrea says he published the source code on a marketplace as an experiment, without expecting much to happen. People started buying it. Their requests, bug reports, and unexpected use cases then gave him a new kind of work: deciding how the tool should evolve for people other than its original creator.

The audience he describes included photographers, agencies, developers, and businesses. They did not all need the same thing. Andrea says he released more than 100 updates over five years, a founder-reported count rather than an independently audited release record. He also describes later additions such as VR, AI tools, Google Street View integration, cloud hosting, and SaaS features—capabilities he was not considering when he wrote the first version.
Feature requests also meant choosing what not to build
For Andrea, the hard part of growth was not simply adding requested features. “Every feature adds complexity.” Each addition has to work with what is already there, be maintained in the future, and avoid creating new ways for the product to fail. In his account, that is why product development also means deciding which ideas to leave out.

He describes user feedback as the point when the real work began: “It’s when the real development begins.” A request may sound useful in isolation, but it becomes a product decision only after considering compatibility, maintenance, and the effect on the rest of the system.

Andrea says the original offer was software that users installed on their own server. That suited people who wanted ownership and control, including control over their data. But installation and ongoing operations are not appealing to everyone. Some users wanted to create tours without handling servers, databases, updates, or other infrastructure. “Not everyone wants to manage a server,” he wrote, and he added a cloud version for that audience.

Neither approach is the universal answer: the trade-off is operational control versus convenience. The current Simple Virtual Tour website describes both cloud and self-hosted deployments; its current feature set and terms may change.

Today, Simple Virtual Tour’s official site describes a workflow that can include uploading panoramic images or video, connecting rooms, adding hotspots, and publishing tours through links, embeds, QR codes, or social networks. Those are present-day product descriptions, not features to attribute to Andrea’s original build.

The story’s useful lesson is how a small solution can change shape once real users bring needs the creator did not anticipate. In Andrea’s case, moving house supplied the initial problem; buyers and their feedback expanded the audience, the feature set, and even the way the software was delivered.
