Buy a conventional action camera if you know the angle you want and want footage that is straightforward to use. Choose a 360-degree camera if you want to capture the scene in every direction and decide later which view to show. That flexibility shifts work from framing while filming to reviewing and reframing footage afterward.
What is the practical difference?
A conventional action camera records a wide-angle view that you compose when you aim the camera. A 360-degree camera records a panoramic view around itself, letting you select a direction or crop during editing. Insta360 describes this capture-and-reframe workflow for the X5, while GoPro lists wide-angle and full-frame capture modes for the HERO13 Black: Insta360 X5 specifications and GoPro HERO13 Black product details.
This is especially consequential when the camera is mounted out of reach or the action is unpredictable: a 360 camera can preserve views you did not point at during recording. With a forward-facing camera, you need to aim toward the view you expect to matter.

These are workflow-based recommendations, not results from a controlled camera test. Headline 360-resolution figures are not directly equivalent to resolution in a conventional forward-facing view. If image quality will decide the purchase, compare sample clips in lighting, motion, and audio conditions like your own; the cited manufacturer specifications do not establish which camera makes better real-world footage.

Do 360 cameras only record 360-degree video?
No. Some 360 cameras also offer single-lens recording, so you can use one camera for a conventional-looking view as well as panoramic capture. The available resolution and frame rate depend on the model and mode: Insta360 lists the X5’s single-lens video up to 4K60, while DJI lists Osmo 360 single-lens video up to 5K60 in Normal mode and 4K Boost Video up to 120 fps. Specifications and modes can vary by configuration and change over time. The HERO13 Black is a concrete conventional-camera comparator, not evidence that it is the newest conventional action camera in every market. Check the manufacturer pages for the model and mode you are considering: X5, Osmo 360, Osmo 360 support, and HERO13 Black.

What to check before buying
Think through the editing workflow
With a 360 camera, decide whether you are willing to review footage and choose the final framing after recording. That extra choice is valuable when you cannot predict the action or camera direction, but it is unnecessary work if you already know the view you want and prefer clips ready to use.

Match resolution to the finished view
Do not treat a panoramic resolution label as if all of those pixels will appear in a single reframed view. The recording covers the full scene, and a selected crop takes only a portion. Compare the available output modes and sample footage for the final framing you expect to publish.
Check water use and stitching behavior
Waterproof depth is model-specific, and a depth rating does not guarantee that underwater footage will look as it does on land. DJI warns that refraction can distort Osmo 360 footage and cause stitching errors, and advises against body-only underwater shooting. Verify the exact camera’s depth rating, housing guidance, and underwater limitations before taking it into water: DJI’s Osmo 360 support and FAQ.

Compare battery claims only within their stated conditions
Runtime varies with resolution, frame rate, mode, and test conditions. For example, the X5’s listed 93 minutes at 8K30 and 208 minutes at 5.7K24 Endurance Mode are different recording modes; the Osmo 360’s figures also vary by mode and are identified by DJI as lab results. GoPro’s HERO13 Black runtime statement uses its own specified test setup. These figures should not be read as a fair ranking across brands. Look up the exact mode you plan to record and allow for your own conditions.

Accessories are not automatically interchangeable. Insta360 specifies a UHS-I V30-or-higher microSD card for the X5; DJI lists built-in storage and microSD expansion for the Osmo 360. Before purchasing, verify the chosen model’s card requirements, mount compatibility, and any housing or lens-protection needs on its manufacturer page.

Which should you buy?
Choose a 360-degree camera if you value capturing every direction, recording from a hard-to-reach mount, or selecting the view after the action. Choose a conventional action camera if you already know the point of view, want a more direct editing path, or prioritize using the captured resolution in one forward-facing frame. If neither workflow clearly wins, decide based on whether you would rather spend effort framing while recording or reviewing and reframing afterward.
