For high-resolution 360-degree stills, compare the Insta360 X6 and DJI Osmo 360 first; the Insta360 X5 is a clearly documented alternative, while GoPro MAX2 is better suited to a professional video workflow. Their headline megapixel and video figures describe different modes, not a controlled comparison of finished image quality. The right pick depends on still-photo detail, action video, water conditions, storage, and how you plan to edit.
How the leading 360 cameras compare
The figures below come from manufacturer specifications where available, plus attributed comparison and buying-guide coverage. They are not results from a controlled head-to-head still-photo test.
| Camera | Documented capture details | Best fit and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X6 | 120MP 360 photos; up to 8K/50fps, as reported by TechRadar’s comparison. | Consider it if high-resolution stills and newer capture specifications are priorities. The cited figures are from comparison coverage; check the current official specification sheet before purchase. TechRadar’s X6/X5 comparison |
| Insta360 X5 | Approximately 72MP (11904 × 5952) 360 photos; 8K/30fps video; 2400mAh battery; UHS-I V30 or higher microSD requirement. Manufacturer lab ratings: 93 minutes at 8K/30fps and 208 minutes at 5.7K/24fps Endurance Mode. | A documented option with a 15m waterproof rating and a manufacturer-listed compatible dive case. Lab runtimes are not field guarantees. Insta360 X5 specifications |
| DJI Osmo 360 | 120MP panoramic photos (15520 × 7760); 8K panoramic video up to 50fps; 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor. | Worth comparing for panoramic still resolution and DJI workflow. DJI says the body can be used underwater up to 10m, subject to restrictions. DJI Osmo 360 specifications |
| GoPro MAX2 | Tom’s Guide lists 8K/30p and describes true stitched 8K, timecode sync, log, and 10-bit workflows. | A video-production-oriented alternative according to the guide. The cited evidence is editorial coverage rather than an official specification page; verify current details with GoPro. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guide |
Which model fits your kind of 360 photography?
For high-resolution still panoramas
Start with the X6 and Osmo 360: comparison coverage reports 120MP 360 photos for the X6, while DJI’s specification lists a 120MP panoramic-photo mode for the Osmo 360. These are not necessarily identical capture or processing pipelines. Megapixels alone do not establish which camera produces more detailed, pleasing, or usable finished images; inspect sample photos and consider stitching and editing in your intended workflow.
For a clearly documented all-around option
The X5’s official specification gives concrete still and video modes, a microSD speed requirement, battery capacity, and mode-specific lab runtimes. Tom’s Guide describes it as a strong all-around choice, an editorial judgment rather than a universal ranking. Its product page positions the model with replaceable lenses and offers an Invisible Dive Case for compatible use. Insta360 X5 product page

For professional video production
Tom’s Guide characterizes the MAX2 as a professional-video option and highlights features such as timecode sync, log, and 10-bit workflows. Those features may matter more than still-photo resolution if your priority is syncing, grading, or delivering 360 video. Confirm current specifications and workflow compatibility with the manufacturer before relying on them for a production setup.
For an existing DJI workflow
Tom’s Guide identifies the Osmo 360 as a natural fit for people already using DJI gear. Treat that as a workflow suggestion, not proof that every accessory or app integration is compatible; check the specific gear and editing tools you use.

Read still and video resolution as separate specifications
A 360 camera’s still-photo resolution and its 360-video resolution describe different modes. For example, Insta360 lists the X5 at approximately 72MP for 360 photos and 8K (7680 × 3840) video at up to 30fps. DJI lists the Osmo 360 at 120MP for panoramic photos and 8K panoramic video up to 50fps. These manufacturer mode figures do not establish comparative image quality, and a video frame rate or resolution should not be mistaken for a still-photo specification.

Consider how the image will be used: a panorama may be viewed as a full sphere, while a reframed export shows only a selected view. Video reframing and still-photo detail are different practical needs. Compare sample files at the final display size and in the editing software you expect to use.

Low-light results need reviewer context
TechRadar’s X6/X5 comparison discusses low-light and heat behavior based on its review observations. Those observations are not a controlled current comparison across all four cameras, so they should not be generalized into a universal low-light ranking. If indoor scenes, evenings, or night capture matter, look for sample images and test conditions from a review that covers the exact models and modes you are considering.
Waterproofing depends on the camera and conditions
- Insta360 X5: Insta360 specifies a 15m waterproof rating. The manufacturer says its Invisible Dive Case supports 360 footage down to 60m; use the compatible case and follow its operating guidance rather than treating the bare-camera depth as the case depth. X5 specifications and X5 product page.
- DJI Osmo 360: DJI says the camera body can be used up to 10m underwater, but advises against long-term underwater use and high water-impact-pressure environments. That caveat matters for extended submersion or forceful water activity. DJI specifications.
- X6 and MAX2: The cited materials do not establish their underwater ratings or case compatibility. Check the current official model documentation rather than inferring them from a related model.
Plan for storage, runtime, and editing
Use the card requirement for the exact camera
Insta360 specifies a UHS-I V30 speed class or higher microSD card for the X5. Do not automatically apply that requirement to the X6, Osmo 360, or MAX2; confirm each model’s supported card type and capacity with its current specifications. High-resolution 360 photo and video files also make available storage and transfer time useful selection criteria.

Compare runtime only at matching settings
Insta360’s X5 lab-rated runtime is 93 minutes at 8K/30fps and 208 minutes at 5.7K/24fps Endurance Mode. TechRadar reports a 140-minute X6 rating at 8K/30fps, compared with 93 minutes for the X5 at that setting. These are manufacturer-rated figures reported in comparison coverage, not a guarantee of time in the field; settings and conditions can change practical runtime. TechRadar comparison
Account for the full editing path
Before choosing, check how footage moves from camera to phone or computer, whether your preferred editor supports the files and production features you need, and how you will store and back up large captures. Tom’s Guide’s buying guide is a useful workflow-oriented reference, but its product judgments are editorial assessments rather than a substitute for checking current app and software compatibility. A practical shortlist checklist
- Decide whether your priority is still panoramas, action video, underwater use, or professional post-production.
- Compare still-photo mode separately from panoramic video resolution and frame rate.
- Look at sample captures and editing outcomes; do not use megapixels alone as a quality ranking.
- Verify the exact body-only water rating, case compatibility, and any restrictions for your activity.
- Check the model-specific microSD standard, capacity support, and expected file sizes.
- Compare battery claims only when resolution, frame rate, and mode match, and treat lab ratings as ratings rather than field promises.
- Confirm current firmware, accessories, app support, availability, and official specifications before buying.
