The Osprey Hikelite 32 is the clearest exact-capacity match in this guide: it is listed at 32 L and includes an adjustable torso fit, a ventilated suspended-mesh backpanel and a raincover. That makes it a well-documented candidate—not a proven overall winner. The Osprey Talon 33 and Gregory Zulu 30 are useful nearby-capacity alternatives, but neither is a 32 L pack. Choose by fit, intended load and access as well as volume; a hiking pack’s dimensions do not establish that an airline will accept it as carry-on baggage.

For an exact 32 L capacity
The Hikelite 32 is the straightforward place to start if you want a pack listed at exactly 32 L. Its product page specifies a top loader, adjustable torso, suspended mesh backpanel and included raincover. Its stated load range is 5–25 lb (2–11 kg), so compare your likely packed load with that range rather than choosing by volume alone. These are listed specifications, not a claim that every user will find the pack comfortable.
For technical day hikes and light overnights
The Talon 33 is a one-litre-larger option for readers considering a more technical pack. Osprey identifies demanding day trips and light overnights as intended uses, and lists a 10–30 lb (4.5–13.6 kg) load range. Its 68 cm listed height is worth checking if you also intend to travel with it; a tall hiking pack may be awkward in some travel situations even when its capacity seems suitable.

For a smaller, more structured alternative
The Zulu 30 offers a framed carry system, suspended mesh and access from the top and panel, according to the cited product listings. Consider it if 30 L is enough and you prefer those design details. Its listed weight varies slightly by size, so compare the weight for the size you would actually buy.
Fit the pack to your body and load
Volume and a size label cannot establish whether a backpack will fit your torso or hips. Measure your torso and check hipbelt sizing against the maker’s sizing chart, then try the pack on if possible. - Use the manufacturer’s torso measurement method and size chart for the exact model.
- Load the pack with weight representative of what you expect to carry, including water and layers.
- Check that the hipbelt sits and adjusts correctly and that the shoulder straps and harness feel suitable while walking.
- Consider the suspension as a design trade-off: suspended mesh can increase airflow, while a more body-contoured carry system may appeal if stability or freedom of movement is a priority. Neither feature guarantees comfort for every body.
Think beyond litres for hikes and overnight trips
A 30–33 L pack can work for a large day hike or a light overnight, depending on how bulky your equipment is and the season. There is no universal trip-duration rule in these product specifications. The Talon 33’s manufacturer names light overnights as an intended use; do not assume the same use or a particular number of days is guaranteed for the Hikelite 32 or Zulu 30.
Account for the full packed load, not just the sleeping bag or clothing. Bulky insulation, extra layers, food, water and safety gear can take more room than compact equipment. If you regularly carry a load outside a pack’s listed range, look for a model designed around that load rather than assuming that unused volume means suitable support.

Can a 32 L hiking backpack be a carry-on?
Possibly, but capacity alone cannot answer that. REI’s 2026 category guide describes 21–35 L as a hiking-and-travel “sweet spot” and says packs in that range may be small enough for overhead bins; that is general category guidance, not airline approval for a particular model. The Hikelite 32 is listed at 58 × 32 × 32 cm, while the Talon 33 is listed at 68 × 30 × 31 cm. Those are manufacturer measurements, not guarantees of carry-on acceptance. A loaded or bulging pack may not fit a sizing frame, and rules vary by carrier and itinerary.

- Check the current cabin-bag dimensions and allowance on every airline in your itinerary, including connecting carriers.
- Compare those limits with the pack’s dimensions, allowing for pockets, straps and a full load that can change its shape.
- Check whether the airline specifies a weight limit or requires the bag to fit in a sizing device.
- Confirm the rules for your ticket and route rather than relying on another airline’s policy or a general claim about 32 L packs.

- Capacity: Decide whether you need exactly 32 L or would accept 30 L or 33 L.
